Letters To My Lover
Chapter 23
The huge body of wolf Karyan towered over Nalani’s head. His eyes blazed with rage.
His snout blew his hot breath into the girl’s face. "Do you do that every day to all of us?" he shouted in Nalani’s mind. "Do you listen to the thoughts of all the wolves here, especially me?"
Nalani calmly shook her head. "I don't want to waste my time," she said. "Oh my, it will be horrible. I can only hear if you're talking directly to me."
Karyan stared at her in disbelief.
"What?" snapped Nalani. "You think I'd enjoy listening to your thoughts while you're tearing into your prey?"
Karyan scowled. "You are so unpredictable, Nalani. Always Giving me surprises that make no sense. I came down here because I saw that the garden had bloomed. How is this possible?"
Nalani was silent, and for a moment she gazed around the garden. At the rose bushes that were blooming with colorful flowers. At the hydrangeas teeming with bees and butterflies.
"Lorelei...," she said softly. "She used to own this garden, didn't she?" she asked.
Karyan growled, ready to unleash his anger again. However, Nalani's next words stopped him. "I feel something in the soil of this garden, Karyan. Something flowing ethereal. Something of the soul left behind in every piece of earth and stone.... and as wild as when I first came here..."
“You... you can feel it? Tell me, what else do you feel?” he demanded.
Nalani looked at his wolf form, her brow furrowed. “You're Unfair, Karyan. You’re prying into me, but you won’t tell me who she is.”
Karyan snorted. “You don’t need to know.”
Nalani shrugged. “Then I won’t tell you anything else.” She Tossed her empty fertilizer bag aside, wiped her hands on the apron over her dress, and started to walk away.
But she had barely taken a step when Karyan’s muzzle grabbed the back of her dress collar. Nalani’s body lifted briefly into the air before being slammed back onto the stone seat with enough force to hurt.
“You think you can control me, Mirean?” His face looked close to Nalani’s, his yellow eyes shone. His mouth grinned, revealing a row of sharp teeth. “Here, I am the one in control.”
Nalani's breath caught in her throat. She glared at Karyan, refusing to let fear show in her eyes. "You may be in control here, but that doesn't mean I should be afraid of you."
Karyan's eyes narrowed, and he let out a low, rumbling growl. "You are playing a dangerously, Nalani."
"Perhaps," she replied. "But I will not be intimidated by you, Karyan. If you want me to respect you, try showing respect first."
For a few moments, they remained like that, locked in a battle of wills. Then, surprisingly, Karyan softened. He stepped back a little, giving Nalani some space.
"Respect is earned," he said finally, his voice not quite as loud. "And you have a long way to go."
Nalani held her pride, feeling a strange relief and rejection. "So do you," she replied softly.
Karyan growled again, but less harshly this time. He stepped back, leaving Nalani standing. She shook herself, her eyes never leaving Karyan's.
"Who is she, Karyan?" she asked softly, sensing Karyn's Moment of vulnerability.
"Why is she so important?"
"Lorelei," he said, almost whispering her name in Nalani's Mind. "She's... everything."
Nalani waited, hoping Karyan would say more, but Karya Shook his head.
"Enough questions," he said sharply. "You've been hanging around outside for too long. Who knows what you will do.Come in, Nalani."
His muzzle pushed Nalani's back, signaling sharply for her to leave. Nalani pouted, but she was strangely obedient.
The girl walked in front of her, stomping around to show her annoyance.
As Karyan watched her, a strange feeling of unease came over him. This girl, this Mirean, was different. This girl challenged him in a way no one else had ever done, and he wasn't sure if he liked it or hated it.
But one thing was certain - she was becoming impossible to ignore.
Nalani couldn’t sleep.
The entire incident in the garden was stuck like glue in her mind. The alpha had seemed vulnerable when Lorelei’s name was mentioned.
His anger had been so clear and real when Nalani refused to read the earth for him.
Truthfully, Nalani had never done such a thing in her life. Yet, something within her had become more sensitive when she was in that garden.
She decided to tell Kabar what had happened in the garden. So, she took out paper and pen…
Nalani sat at her desk, the paper in front of her was still blank. She took a deep breath and began to write, her thoughts flowing on the paper.
Dear Kabar,
I hope this letter reaches your hands well. I am writing this letter from my room, and I have many things to say.
Karyan is still imprisoning Ordas, the assassin. It seems they have not been able to get her to open her mouth. I am trying to get her to open her mouth in my own way. But I had to do it stealthily because Karyan forbade me from approaching the dungeon where they were holding her.
Then, Kabar, have you heard the name Lorelei of Mond? Apparently that name is very important to Karyan. It was you who told me to look for the opponent’s weak points. It's Possible that this woman named Lorelei is Karyan’s weak point.
During our conversation, that name triggered a strong reaction in him. He became vulnerable, almost sick, when he heard it. When I questioned him about the woman, he became angry and defensive, refusing to tell me anything.
You know me, Kabar. I’m not one to back away from a mystery. I will continue to find out about them for you.
With all my love,
Nalani
She folded the paper carefully, sealing it with the small crestand wax she carried with her, as a reminder of her bond with Kabar.
“Mita.” she called out to her servant. Mita came from her small room. “Give this letter to Kabar.”
Mita nodded and received it.
