Gut Feeling

“This is the right building,” Bart said, finding a parking spot on the street. “But I have no idea how we’re going to figure out which apartment is Rome’s or how we’ll get to him.”
Ella got out of the car, only half listening to him. She was feeling out with her heart, trying to find her other half. Something was wrong; she could feel it in her blood. With every beat of her heart, anxiety pulsed through her veins, into her limbs, seeming to pool in her stomach which was tight with worry.
She stood on the sidewalk, gazing up at the building. The blonde wig on her head was likely enough to fool anyone passing by on the street, especially since most people wouldn’t be looking for her now that the world thought she was dead. But if Rome’s father’s guards came out, they might realize who she was. Especially if they saw Bart who was still recognizable with his sunglasses on.
That was the least of her concerns, though, as she counted windows to try to determine which floor was Rome’s.
Her eyes went to a window about seven floors up. Antonio had said that Rome’s parents apartment number was 751. Could that be it? If so, could that be Rome’s room? There was no logical reason for her to pick that one. She just had a feeling….
Dropping her eyes to the sidewalk, Ella felt around for some rocks. Her arm wasn’t that strong. Would she even be able to throw a rock that high and be accurate? She had to try. With about five pebbles in her hand, she stood, moved over a few steps, and tossed one up.
It missed--by a long shot, hitting the brick side of the building and tinkling down the fire escape. She swore under her breath.
“What are you doing?” Bart asked, coming over next to her.
“I don’t know. I think that’s it. That room, right there.” She pointed at the one she’d been aiming for.
“The one where the light’s off?” Mary questioned.
“Yeah.” She tried again. The pebble got closer this time, but she still missed.
“Why do you think that’s it?” Bart asked.
“I have no idea,” she admitted. “Just a feeling.”
“Let me try.” Bart tossed a pebble and missed by even more than Ella had.
Mary blew out a hot breath. “You two stink.” She looked around on the ground and found her own pebble instead of taking one from Ella. Then, she brought her arm back and let it fly.
The pebble hit right in the center of the window Ella had been aiming at. With her mouth open, she turned and looked at Mary. “That was impressive.”
The petite girl shrugged. “I used to play softball.”
“Can you do it again?” Bart asked.
“I hope so.” Mary took a pebble from Ella this time and threw it again. The rock also hit its mark. She threw two more before there was movement behind the glass.
Ella put her hands out in front of her friends to get them to stop tossing pebbles, but then, they were watching the window intently, too.
The curtains fluttered, and then were pulled aside. A naked male torso became visible, and then slowly, the glass pulled up and a head poked out.
Ella covered her mouth with her hands, unable to believe her eyes. She wanted to scream but couldn’t, so she just stood there with tears rolling down her cheeks.
