Secrets of the Void
The night sky was a canvas of endless black, broken only by the distant glitter of stars. The weight of the trial still lingered on Lyra’s shoulders as she stood next to Thalor, feeling the cool air whisper across her skin. She had faced a piece of her past, a fragment of her own fears, but the lingering question in her mind was: What was next?
Soraya watched her silently, her sharp eyes darting between Thalor and Lyra, and for the first time in a long while, the woman seemed quiet—almost pensive. Soraya’s usual wit was absent, replaced by something more thoughtful, as though she was calculating their next move.
Thalor broke the silence. "You did well today," he said, his voice as steady as ever. "But the hardest part is still ahead of us."
Lyra felt a chill run down her spine. "That was just the beginning, wasn’t it?"
He nodded slowly, his gaze shifting to the stars. "Yes. The power inside you is awakening, but the Core is a conduit, not just for your strength, but for something much older. We’re nearing the heart of the Void, Lyra. You can feel it, can’t you?"
Lyra inhaled deeply, closing her eyes for a moment as she centered herself. The emptiness in her chest wasn’t gone; if anything, it had grown deeper, more pronounced, ever since she’d unleashed her power in the trial. It was like a gaping chasm within her, and as much as it terrified her, it also drew her closer, beckoning her forward.
"I feel it," she admitted, opening her eyes and glancing at Thalor. "But what is it? You keep talking about the Void, but you’ve never told me what it really is."
Thalor hesitated. For the first time since they’d met, a shadow of uncertainty crossed his face. "The Void… It is the birthplace of power, of life, and of death. It is the place where all things begin and end. It is where I come from."
Lyra’s heart skipped a beat. She had always known Thalor was different, otherworldly, but she hadn’t fully understood just how far removed from her reality he was.
"You mean… you’re not from this universe?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Thalor shook his head. "No. My kind exists outside of the natural order of things. We are guardians, watchers of the cosmic balance. The Core you possess is a fragment of that balance, a piece of the Void’s power."
Soraya took a step forward, her brow furrowed. "So, what you’re saying is, Lyra’s connected to the same source as you?"
Thalor glanced at her briefly before his gaze returned to Lyra. "In a way, yes. But her connection is different. The Core inside her is not meant to control; it’s meant to create. To forge new pathways in the universe, to open doors that have long been sealed shut."
Lyra’s mind raced, trying to piece together the implications of what Thalor was saying. "So… what does that mean for me? What happens if I can’t control it?"
"The Core will consume you," Thalor said bluntly. "It will tear you apart, piece by piece, until there’s nothing left. That’s why we need to prepare you—to harness its power before it’s too late."
Soraya frowned. "And what happens if she does control it?"
Thalor’s expression darkened. "Then she will become a force unlike any the universe has seen before. The balance will tip, and those who seek to manipulate that balance will come for her."
A shiver ran down Lyra’s spine at his words. There were people—or beings—out there who would try to take this power from her. She thought back to the strange creatures they had encountered before, the enemies lurking in the shadows. They were just the beginning, weren’t they?
"So we need to get ahead of them," Lyra said, determination hardening her voice. "We can’t wait for them to find us. We need to go after them."
Thalor gave her a look, a mixture of respect and warning. "You’re not ready."
"I know," she said, her hands clenching into fists. "But we don’t have time to wait. The more we sit here, the closer they get. And I won’t let them take me or this power without a fight."
Soraya smirked, the tension in the air lifting slightly. "Looks like the kid’s got some fight left in her after all."
Lyra shot her a look, but the smile tugging at the corners of her lips betrayed her. The banter, however brief, brought a small sense of normalcy back to the chaos they were living through. But it was short-lived, as the sky above them shimmered.
A ripple ran through the stars, warping the fabric of space itself. Thalor’s eyes widened, his stance shifting as he took a step forward. "They’re coming."
Lyra’s pulse quickened. "Who?"
Before Thalor could answer, the air around them seemed to crackle with energy. A portal began to tear open in the sky, swirling with dark energy, the Void itself seeping through. The portal’s edges sparked with electric currents, and the overwhelming pressure of raw power poured into the atmosphere.
Lyra could feel it—the immense weight of the beings approaching. Her instincts screamed at her to run, to flee, but she stood her ground. She wasn’t that weak, scared girl anymore. She was something more now.
Through the portal stepped three figures, each cloaked in shadow. Their forms were ethereal, almost indistinct, but the power they radiated was suffocating. Lyra’s breath hitched in her throat as the leader of the trio locked eyes with her. His gaze pierced through her like a blade.
Thalor stepped protectively in front of her, his voice low and dangerous. "Stay back."
The leader of the group chuckled, the sound echoing like a haunting melody. "Thalor, the guardian of the Void, protecting a mortal? How quaint."
Thalor’s body tensed, the energy around him crackling as he prepared for a fight. "You don’t belong here, Idris."
The figure—Idris—tilted his head, his shadowy form flickering in the dim light. "And yet, here I am. We have come for what belongs to us."
Lyra’s chest tightened. She could feel the Core pulsing inside her, reacting to Idris’s presence. It was like a magnet, drawing the power toward him. She clenched her fists, fighting the pull with every ounce of her willpower.
"She’s not yours," Thalor growled. "The Core belongs to no one."
Idris smirked, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement. "You can’t protect her forever, Thalor. The Void calls to its own. She will come to us, whether you want it or not."
Thalor’s jaw tightened, his stance shifting as he prepared for an attack. But before he could move, Idris raised a hand, a surge of energy radiating from him.
"Let’s see how well you can protect her," Idris said, his voice dripping with malice.
In an instant, the air around them exploded with energy. Lyra felt a wave of force slam into her, knocking her off her feet. The world around her blurred, and for a moment, she lost all sense of direction. But as she hit the ground, her instincts kicked in.
She scrambled to her feet, her heart racing as she saw Thalor and Soraya locked in battle with the shadowy figures. Thalor’s power clashed with Idris’s, their energies colliding in a dazzling display of light and darkness. Soraya, meanwhile, was fending off the other two figures with a mixture of agility and raw combat skill.
But Lyra could feel the Core inside her reacting, surging with energy. The closer Idris came, the stronger the pull became. She could feel the power trying to tear itself out of her, trying to answer the call of the Void.
"No," she whispered, gritting her teeth. "You’re mine. Not his."
She planted her feet firmly on the ground, closing her eyes and reaching deep within herself. The Core pulsed, wild and chaotic, but Lyra wasn’t afraid anymore. She had faced her fears. She had faced her past.
Now, she would face the future.
With a deep breath, Lyra unleashed the power inside her. The energy surged outward, rippling through the air and slamming into Idris. The force of the blast knocked him back, his shadowy form flickering in the light of her power.
For the first time since he had arrived, Idris looked surprised. He straightened, his eyes narrowing as he looked at her. "Interesting…"
But Lyra wasn’t done. She stepped forward, her hands glowing with the energy of the Core as she faced him head-on.
"You want this power?" she said, her voice steady and strong. "Come and take it."
