Chapter 19
"I mean, if you would be all right with that. I would call an ambulance for you, but that would take a long time, and having a father who works in the ER, I tend to not use them unless it's an absolute emergency."
“If you have the time,” she tried not to smile at his rambling.
Dr. Parks smiled back and shook his head a little. “That is where I was meant to be today, anyway. I only came into the office to see you because you called.” His face flushed with color. “They called me to say that you were coming in. They should have sent you directly to the hospital to see me instead of booking you to see the other doctor.”
He walked closer to her and reached out his hand. “Stand up slowly,” he said as he guided her up. As she stood, it came to her that she had never walked into the room.
“How did I get in here?”
“Luckily for you, I was right behind you and was able to catch you as you fell. I carried you in.”
She groaned and her face heated up. “I am so sorry,” she almost whined.
“Again with your apologies. Do you apologize so much at work too?” She shook her head.
“I don’t embarrass myself constantly there.”
“Well, you shouldn’t apologize for something you can’t control.”
“It’s still embarrassing,” she moaned and before she could say another word, he wrapped his arm around her waist and held her to his side so that they could walk.
“What do you do for a living, Pandora?” he asked.
She told him and saw that he was looking at her in surprise. “Let me guess, my occupation has you surprised?” she didn’t need to ask to know what he was thinking.
“Somewhat surprised but I don’t doubt that you are talented in your field. I did assume you worked in media or communications because you are so put together. Your hair up, nice dress clothes and glasses. Just just have that personality.”
She scoffed but this was something she had heard several times before.
“I am not mocking you, you just look like a sweet and well-read woman.” She didn’t feel as if he was being condescending. “My car is the black one,” he stated.
Her eyes scanned the parking lot and were drawn to a motorcycle. Pandora slyly wondered if she could ever have something like that between her thighs. It did turn her on and she remembered what Dr. Parks had said about being easily aroused. She pulled her eyes away and saw a black mercedes parked right beside it.
Dr. Parks opened the door and helped her in before jogging to the other side.
As he drove, he took deep breaths. Waves of nausea hit her.
“Slow, deep breaths, Pandora. Nice and easy,” he instructed her.
“When I was training to be a doctor, I was put in each department for rounds. One day I was in the aftercare for surgery and the patient was in bed. A training nurse was looking him over when he asked her if his testicles were still there. The nurse was shocked but kept her wits about her. She replied that she was not sure if that was part of her job. The man looked at her and pleaded. This time the nurse was concerned that he would get sick. She pulled back the covers and held his penis in one hand and his testicles in the other.”
Pandora didn’t know where this story was headed but she was intrigued.
“Everything is still fine, the nurse told the patient. The man smiled at her and then told her he had asked her if his test results were back.”
Pandora dissolved into a fit of giggles. “Did that really happen?” she questioned. He only winked at her in response.
“What made you choose OBGYN?”
He looked at her before turning back to the road. "I love kids, and love the whole pregnancy thing. To me you're not a mom-to-be, you're already a mom. Your baby is here and now." He removed his right hand from his steering wheel and placed it on her bump. "I know that's a strange way to think of it," he said softly as he removed his hand. "But these are precious moments that I enjoy being a part of."
She nodded and held back a sob when she recalled that Nemo would be missing out on so much. Even if she did find him, he would already miss out on so many important moments.
“I didn’t mean to upset you,” Dr. Parks said, looking concerned.
“It’s not you. Just…” she stopped talking and cleared her throat. “I’m still overwhelmed by everything.”
“It gets easier as your hormones start to settle. If it's okay with you, I would like to do another scan on you when we get to the hospital.”
“Yes, I would love that. I would feel much better seeing Bean again,” she said with a smile.
He pulled into the car park. “Please stay here,” he said with a stern look. She watched him walk into the hospital and closed her eyes hoping she wouldn’t get sick in his car. “Okay, Pandora,” he said as he opened her door. “Just take it slow from the car and into the wheelchair.”
Her head snapped to him and then into the wheelchair behind him. She groaned at the fact that the sudden movement made her nauseous. The thought of being wheeled around in a wheelchair didn’t help matters, either.
“It’s just in case you faint again,” he reassured.
“Fine,” she whined like a child. “But you have to push me really fast so that no one sees me.” She pouted, making Dr. Parks laugh out loud.
“When we get to the department,” he agreed on that condition. Pandora clapped in appreciation. “We now have you and the baby on board. Safety is on. And we take off.”
He kept a hold of her until she was safely sitting in the wheelchair. He kicked his car door closed. The entire way to the hospital and to the elevator, he walked slowly.
