Cara POV
I wipe my forehead with the back of my hand. Today the hotel is filled to capacity. Everyone's eyes are fixed on the television, phone, laptop or anything that is streaming the Nickel's wedding of the century.
I glance at the wall clock, my shift should be ending in a few. I just want to be out of here.
"You are going to miss the best part." Kelly, a coworker, says. I have known her for several days I have been working here.
"And Tony will fire your ass once he finds you watching that nonsense instead of working," I warn her as I load dishes into the dishwasher.
"So you aren't over the guy, look at you." She moves closer.
"I would have had to be into him to get over him." I staunchly declare.
She rolls her eyes, "Sure honey, and my boobs are real." My eyes move to her chest where her plastic boobs are pushed up close to her chin. "Like what you see?" She shakes them in front of my face. I suppress a smile. I like Kelly, she is real and never sugarcoats anything. She is twenty with a dream of being a model. Other than the lack of height she has it all. The confidence, beauty and charisma.
"Whatever we had, it is over. How do you want me to spell it for you?" I put my hands akimbo.
"What if we race over there on a horse like in those silly RomComs and stop the wedding by declaring your undying love." Her eyes widened like a just a brilliant idea popped in her head, "Let's go gate crash it, eat their cake and take over their dance floor to prove that you are over him."
I shake my head in disbelief, "I am not crazy, Kelly."
"Well, I am. Our shift is over. Live a little." She starts to untie her apron.
I look at her and realise she is serious. "I am going home to rest," I state.
"Fine. You are boring as fuck." She also unties her ponytail and her curls fall on her shoulder. "One time my ex cheated on me, I linked his WhatsApp account with his mother, that woman hated my guts she thought I was bad for her son. Anyway back to my Ex, every time one of his many hoes send him nudes, videos or their sex chats it went directly into his mother's phone. The woman almost died of heart attack she couldn't believe her perfect son was capable of that."
What breed of craziness is this girl?
"Remind me never to piss you off," I say.
"You think that is the worst I did for him? That was just the tip of the icing."
I unload the dishes. The people for the next shift have already arrived. I sigh in relief.
"Can we leave now, " I request.
"Today I'm driving."
"Thank God, my fingers are swollen like sausages." This work is exhausting I can't believe people do this year after year. On top of that, for minimum wage.
"Welcome to the working nation princess." I follow her lead. Kelly has been working here for two years. She is saving to go to design school.
My Audi is parked outside, we both board it. "How did you manage to afford this baby and go to that fancy university?" She enquires.
"I..."
"Oh, I forgot. I remember reading in the magazines that you were once a stripper. The industry has money" she cuts me off.
"I wasn't a stripper," I interject.
"But you were paid to entertain men?" She raises her trimmed eyebrows.
And women.
I can't tell her, my mission there was for investigation purpose. Though the pay and tips did help a lot. "Yeah!" I nod.
"See...stripper." She states. The term stripper leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
"Okay, point taken. However, I have done other respectable jobs over the years." I stress the term respectable.
"I'm not judging you, sweety, I have done worse."
For the first time, I realise the route she driving.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"Home, I just have to pick something up."
"What?"
"Don't worry, just relax."
I can't relax because I know where this road leads, even by the amount of traffic on it one can tell where most of them are heading to. The Emerson Hotel.
"You are crazy."
"I can not dispute that. I warned you."
"So, what is your plan?"
"Do you love this guy?"
"No!" I answer without a second thought.
"Too bad. You slept with him, it must mean something."
"I guess." I stare outside.
The Emerson Hotel is filled with no space for parking. We are forced to drive to the nearest supermarket and park there. Though we flee the place in a hurry before we are caught.
We stand confused outside the hotel. I don't think we will be allowed in. Especially me. What am I even doing here?
"What was your plan?" Though am sure the church ceremony is over. As we left work they were exchanging vows. Now it is just the reception.
"I don't know. You are the rational one, you should have stopped me."
I give her a 'are you kidding me?' look.
"I love the thrill. If it was me I would just burst in. Stop the wedding with some lies like am pregnant or silly ass shit like, are you just going to abandon us, we made a commitment, Koko needs us."
My brows knit in confusion, "who is Koko?"
"The Dog you both adopted."
What the hell is she talking about?
"Cara?" We both interrupted when I spot Ryan walking towards us. "What are you doing here?"
I can't think of a lie, "I wanted to congratulate Quinn."
"You a bit too late, the newlyweds just left for the airport," Ryan says though I can detect a hint satisfaction in his tone.
"Oh, " is what I manage to mumble. I remember I didn't introduce them, "Ryan this is my friend Kelly. Kelly this is Quinn's friend, Ryan."
They awkwardly greet each other.
"Nice to see you. We shall be leaving." I say.
"Don't you want to come in and party with the rest. Your friend Roxy is inside. And I think I saw Andre too"
I shake my head declining the offer. We bid him goodbye as we head back where we parked our car.
I just made a fool of myself by allowing myself to be here. He is now taken not that it bothers me. Maybe a little. I just hate how I am feeling being here and not knowing why I am here.
It is for the best that he is now taken.
