Chapter 45

“Meredith became extraordinarily strong. One night on a full moon she trapped Lucifer and hundreds of creatures of the night in their own realm. The spell she cast could only be undone by the blood of Meredith and would only work before the child became an adult. You are a descendent of Meredith. Her blood runs through your veins.”
My mind swims with many questions. "So, Meredith was the Virgin Mary?" I ask, hoping I had followed the story correctly.
"Yes, Meredith was indeed Mary. As the years went by the story changed little by little, to what the people on Earth now believe."
"So, they need my blood to reverse the spell that locks him in his castle?"
"Yes, but I am afraid that is no longer the case. The portal has already been opened. They carried out the ritual while you and Chris were kidnapped in the Land of Forgotten Souls." That explains my cut wrists and the weakness I felt when I woke in the motel.
Images flash in my mind. A low hum of voices grows louder until they become clear. The scenes play out clearly. So, it wasn’t a dream. He’d taken my memories. The water he’d given me at the motel had stripped them away.
Anger wells up inside me. I fling myself from the bed. “Where is he?"
"Hey, calm down. Who do you want? What is wrong?"
“Chris. Where’s Chris?” Not waiting for his answer, I storm out the room and follow the familiar electric current, which becomes stronger with each step.
I throw open a door at the far end of the hall. Chris jumps up startled.
"How could you!" I yell.
He looks at me with wide eyes. "Okay, I think you should really calm down." He eyes my hand warily. I look down to see a large blue electric ball. "Calm down, and it will go away.”
Chris takes a step towards me and my anger flares back to life. The ball shoots forth missing him by a millimeter. He vanishes just in time. The electric ball crashes into the bathroom door, leaving a huge hole in its wake.
"What the hell is wrong with you?” he yells as he reappears. “How the hell am I going to explain a hole in my door?"
"Why don't you just give them a bottle of water like you did me, then they will forget they ever saw the hole in the first place," I yell as I storm out of the room. Suddenly I feel exhausted. My body shakes with the anger that is trying to consume me. A headache begins to form at the base of my skull.
Misty barrels out of her room, nearly knocking me over in the process. "What's going on?"
She places her hand on my arm. I shake it off. She looks at me with a surprised expression.
"I want out of here as soon as possible!" I yell as I march back to my room.
James stands by the window, a slight smirk on his face. "Are you ready now?"
"For what," I snap, my arms crossed.
He smiles and moves away from the window. “For your face being repaired," he answers in a calm voice completely unaffected by my outburst.
I march to the bed and perch on the edge. If I’m going to make it on my own, then not having the burns would be useful. They would only giveaway my identity. Without them, I could run like my mother. Change my hair and wear contacts. Keep moving. I would need money though. I feel my shoulders sag in defeat.
"I am not really very good at this, but I will try my best," James says.
Fifteen minutes later he sighs. "The burns are too deep. Healing is one of my brother's strong points. I can deal with scratches and small cuts, but this is beyond me. I’m sorry."
"Then I will just have to bear these marks," I mutter, walking into the bathroom and closing the door. I slide down, pulling my knees up and tucking my head in-between. Tears spill from my eyes. All the emotions I’ve locked up well to the surface and burst out.
I ignore numerous knocks on the door. At one point I am sure I heard Amelia's soft voice pleading with me. The black cloud of depression hangs over me. I feel helpless and lost. I am free from one nightmare only to just awake in another.
My heart feels broken. Betrayed by my family and friends with their countless lies and unanswered questions. I feel like I’m sinking into a black hole.
