Playing with Shadows
Lena
After the explosive revelation about the marriage, I was left alone in the command room, trying to process the whirlwind of emotions threatening to overwhelm me. The weight of Thorne’s words and Kael’s apparent acceptance left me with a deep sense of betrayal. There was no doubt that I was being played on a board where every move was carefully planned. But I refused to be the passive piece in their game.
I was escorted back to my quarters by one of the guards, but the anger and frustration still simmered inside me. I couldn’t allow them to manipulate me like this. If they wanted to play, then I would too — but on my terms.
As soon as I entered the room, I slammed the door shut, trying to calm the storm brewing in my chest. But instead of succumbing to despair, I began to think about how I could turn this situation to my advantage. I needed allies, a way to ensure that even if I were married, I wouldn’t be controlled by Thorne or any other alien leader.
As I was reflecting, I heard a knock on the door. My body tensed, but before I could react, the door opened, revealing Kael. His expression was a mix of concern and something I couldn’t quite identify.
“Lena, may I come in?” he asked, his voice calm but with a tone that suggested he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
I nodded, stepping aside to let him in. He closed the door behind him and stood in the center of the room, watching me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable.
“I know you’re angry,” he began, trying to approach me, but I kept a distance between us.
“Anger doesn’t even begin to describe what I’m feeling, Kael,” I retorted, my voice cold. “Did you really think I’d accept this absurd idea without a fight?”
Kael sighed, running a hand through his hair, a gesture that seemed to denote frustration. “I understand how this sounds, Lena. But believe me, this is one of the few ways to ensure your safety. Thorne is concerned, and rightfully so.”
“Concerned?” I repeated, disbelief clear in my voice. “He’s obsessed with control, Kael. And you’re letting it happen.”
Kael shook his head, as if wrestling with his own thoughts. “I didn’t want it to come to this. But Thorne is right about one thing — your influence here is greater than you realize. If things get out of hand, there will be consequences.”
“So this is your solution? Forcing me into a marriage I don’t want, just so you can keep me under control?” I laughed, but without humor. “This is ridiculous.”
Kael stepped closer, finally closing the distance between us. “It’s not about control, Lena. At least, not for me. I see this as a way to ensure you stay safe, that we have a strong alliance to face what’s coming. If there’s another way, I’m willing to consider it.”
I looked at him, trying to decipher his true intentions. There was something in his eyes that told me he was being sincere, but I couldn’t forget that he was, in a way, playing the same game as Thorne.
“Another way,” I murmured, more to myself than to him. “Maybe there is.”
Kael raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What do you have in mind?”
I crossed my arms, thinking about how to articulate my plan. “If you want me to get married, fine. But I won’t be a submissive wife. I want power, I want an active role in decisions that affect Earth and its people. And more than that, I want access to the information you’ve been hiding from me.”
Kael was silent for a moment, pondering my words. “You’re asking to be treated as an equal.”
“Exactly,” I replied firmly. “If we’re going to do this, then I want it to be on my terms as well. You can’t expect me to just accept being used.”
He nodded slowly. “I’ll talk to Thorne about it. But Lena, you need to understand that this also means taking on responsibilities, not just for Earth. There will be difficult decisions to make.”
“I’m ready,” I replied, perhaps with more conviction than I actually felt. But I knew it was the only way to avoid being completely subdued by Thorne or anyone else.
Kael looked at me, and for a moment, it seemed like he wanted to say something more, something he was holding back. But instead, he just nodded again and turned to leave.
“I’ll talk to Thorne,” he repeated before leaving the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
When the door closed behind him, I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. Things were changing quickly, and I didn’t know how it would all end. But one thing was certain: I wouldn’t let Kael or Thorne control my fate. I would play their game, but always keeping my own interests in mind.
Night was approaching, and with it, new challenges I knew I would have to face. But now, at least, I had a plan — and the determination to fight for my freedom, no matter the cost.
