Chapter 10 Press Conference

What could I say?

In Nicole's eyes, I saw the hatred and the satisfaction.

The whole situation was absurd.

We were sisters, not just by chance, but full blood, only two years apart.

After my mother passed away, it should have been just us—supposedly the closest kin in the entire world.

I curled my lip, a mocking smile flickering across my face.

Gripping the phone, I started, "I want to say—"

"Mr. Xavier, your fiancée is talking nonsense, spreading rumors on purpose."

"If you're going to let her twist the truth and make up stories just because you're in love with her, be my guest. But I'll quote you verbatim in today's press release."

"People see through these things, you know. A project led by those who blur the lines of morality? It's like asking for scrutiny."

Whether it was the rebellious Young Executive from the past, or the ruthless Power Holder of today's rumors, someone should've been outraged by such a blatant threat.

But...

He just walked up on stage, step by measured step, under the spotlight.

Standing high on equal footing, facing me from a distance.

He called my name in a hushed tone: " Madeline Thompson."

A sudden wave of bitterness filled my heart.

I didn't want to hear him make excuses for Nicole.

I turned away, stating emphatically:

"Every single accusation against me is baseless—just rumors."

"My professional exchanges with Nicole Zimmerman's fiancé, Lucas Xavier, are just that—professional. We've had no personal interactions—"

"No interactions?" I was cut off mid-sentence by Lucas's voice, "You gave me a ring yet don't plan to take responsibility?"
