Chapter 137
The squid’s enormous eye focuses on me, dark and calculating, its intent as sharp as a knife. The water churns violently, creating a vortex of bubbles and debris, as the creature thrashes its massive tentacles. One of them whips toward me, slicing through the water with terrifying speed. Instinct takes over, and I dart sideways, narrowly avoiding a blow that could shatter every bone in my body.
The creature is relentless, and worse—it seems to recognize what I am. The dark intelligence in its eye chills me to my core.
Before I can react further, Cora appears beside me, cutting through the chaos with an effortless grace I can’t hope to match. Her deep blue eyes lock onto mine, sharp with determination. Even in this deadly maelstrom, she radiates an air of command. There’s no time for explanations, no time for me to process the shock of seeing her in this state—confident, powerful, and utterly in her element.
She grabs my arm, her grip firm but not painful, and pulls me closer. “You’re Electra’s heir,” she says, her voice steady despite the swirling chaos around us. “I always suspected, but now there’s no doubt.”
“What do you mean, no doubt?” I shout, but the squid’s ear-splitting screech drowns out my words.
Cora doesn’t answer right away, instead gesturing toward the glowing tendrils of lightning crackling faintly around my body. The sparks jump from my hands, barely contained. “Your power is raw, untamed, but it’s there. If you don’t learn to control it, you’re as dangerous as that creature.”
The squid swings another tentacle toward us, and Cora shoves me aside, slashing at the appendage with a weapon I hadn’t noticed her holding. The blade glows faintly, cutting through the water with streaks of light. The strike buys us a few seconds as the tentacle recoils, sending shockwaves through the water.
“Stay close to me,” Cora commands, her tone brooking no argument. “I’ll guide you!”
The battle rages around us as Wake and Khale engage the creature. Khale’s long, curved blade leaves glowing arcs in the water with every precise strike, while Wake fights with brute force, tearing and ripping at the tentacles gripping the ship. Despite their combined strength, the squid is relentless, its sheer size and power making it a formidable opponent.
Cora grips my arm again, her urgency cutting through my panic. “Phoebe, listen to me! Your power comes from within, but Electra’s gift draws from the storm itself. Feel the water. Feel the electricity in the air—it’s part of you.”
A tentacle snakes toward us again, faster this time, but Cora blocks it with a fierce slash of her blade. Her movements are so fluid, so precise, that I can only stare in awe. “Focus!” she barks, snapping me out of it. “You’ve already tapped into your power before. Trust yourself!”
Another tentacle lunges, this one aimed directly at me. Fear grips me, but my body reacts instinctively. My hands spark with energy, and a bolt of lightning leaps from my fingertips, striking the tentacle mid-swing. The squid recoils, its screech reverberating through the water like a shockwave.
My chest tightens as the raw power surges through me. It’s wild, overwhelming, and I feel as though I’m losing myself in it. “I can’t control it!” I cry, the electricity crackling erratically around me, leaping from my hands to the water and back again.
Cora swims in front of me, shielding me from another attack. Her voice cuts through the chaos like a blade. “You don’t need control—not yet. Channel the energy into the creature. It’s too big, too strong to fight with brute force.”
Wake swims past us, grappling with a tentacle and sinking his teeth into the flesh with a ferocity that makes my heart race. Blood blooms in the water like a dark cloud. “Phoebe, do as she says!” he shouts, his voice echoing through the water.
I grit my teeth and close my eyes, trying to tune out the chaos. The storm within me feels endless, impossible to grasp. But as I focus on the water, the electricity coursing through the air, something clicks. The water feels alive, charged, and I pull it toward me, letting it gather in my hands. It’s like holding a hurricane, wild and untamed.
Cora places her hand over mine, grounding me. “Good, Phoebe. Now aim. Focus on the beast.”
I open my eyes, locking onto the squid’s massive form. Its tentacles thrash, gripping the ship with unrelenting force. With a deep breath, I thrust my hands forward, releasing the energy in a blinding burst of lightning. The water explodes with light, the shockwave rippling outward and striking the creature in its center.
The squid writhes in pain, its grip on the ship loosening as it lets out a deafening screech. Khale and the other Euclideans seize the opportunity, slicing through its tentacles with deadly precision. Wake tears into another limb, ripping it free from the creature’s body with a roar.
Cora turns to me, her expression fierce but proud. “You’re doing it, Phoebe. Keep going!”
The energy surges through me again, stronger this time, and I unleash another bolt of lightning. The water churns violently as the squid’s movements grow sluggish. Finally, with one last screech, it releases its hold on the ship and retreats into the abyss, its massive form disappearing into the darkness.
The sea calms. The storm above begins to dissipate, the lightning fading into the sky. I’m left floating in the water, my body trembling from the effort, every muscle screaming in protest. My breaths come in ragged gasps, and for a moment, all I can do is stare at the spot where the squid vanished.
Cora places a hand on my shoulder, her expression softening. “You did it,” she says, her voice full of quiet pride. “Electra chose well.”
Wake swims to my side, blood streaking his face but his eyes bright with triumph. He places a hand on my waist, steadying me. “You’re stronger than you think,” he says, his voice low and steady.
I glance between him and my grandmother, my chest heaving as I try to process everything. The battle, the power, the truth about who I am—it’s almost too much. But beneath the exhaustion, the fear, and the lingering pain, I feel something I haven’t felt in a long time.
Hope.
Cora meets my gaze, her blue eyes filled with determination. “This is only the beginning, Phoebe. Leviathan’s kin won’t stop, and neither can we. You’re ready now, whether you realize it or not.”
I nod, my resolve hardening. “Then let’s finish this.”
