Chapter Forty-Seven

The next morning arrived, casting a pale light across the ship's interior. We were still ensnared in hyperspace, a realm of surreal and distorted reality that had become our temporary home. As I emerged from the bunk, I found the others already awake, a sense of urgency and purpose enveloping the small space.

Kaden gathered us together, his presence commanding attention even in the dimly lit room. A sense of gravity hung in the air, amplified by the knowledge that our situation was dire. He spoke with a measured tone, every word imbued with purpose. "I've called in a favor from Alagar."

At the mere mention of that name, Callum and Zade exchanged wary glances, their expressions shifting into guarded masks. "We don't trust Alagar," Callum stated flatly, a sentiment echoed by Zade's knowing nod.

Kaden's lips quirked into a half-smile, his gaze steady. "That's exactly why I chose it.”

He revealed his plan, the next steps that we would take to evade the Lunarrii warships that chased us through hyperspace. Three ships were being called in, a division of our forces to increase our chances of survival. Zade and Callum were assigned to take one warship, engaging in aerial combat in the skies above the planet Bose, where they would switch ships once more.

The second warship was designated for Isodel and Elara, who would journey to Liko—an outer rim planet of the Kaimari, a place where the Empire's hold was weaker, and resistance was stronger. And finally, Kaden and—there was a fleeting moment of hesitation, a slip of the tongue—me, Irina, would head to Coravon, an independent planet.

My curiosity was piqued, and I couldn't help but speak up. "Alagar is an Empire-controlled planet, correct?"

Callum's smirk was laced with confidence. "There are more within the Empire's grasp who want to rebel than you might think."
Isodel confirmed the orders with a crisp nod. "I'll go get suited up," she announced, her steps purposeful.

"Wait up, Is," Callum called, an eagerness in his voice. "I want dibs on the RM-44."

With a groan, he sprinted after her, leaving the room in a flurry of motion.

As everyone else dispersed, I found myself lingering, a palpable distance between Kaden and me. I sensed the tension radiating from him, a stark departure from the Kaden I had known in the past few days. His focus was entirely on the looming conflict, on the war they had waged countless times before. The full weight of his armor, the air of authority it granted him, was both awe-inspiring and intimidating.

A sudden urge to break through that distance welled up within me. I took a step closer, my hand extending slightly as if to touch his armored shoulder. But uncertainty held me back, and I quickly retracted my hand.

Without a word, I turned away, leaving Kaden to his thoughts. I joined the others, preparing to suit up for the challenges that awaited us. There was an unspoken understanding among us all—the gravity of the situation required our utmost dedication, and even the slightest distraction could prove costly.

Clad in our armor, poised for the impending clash, we crouched together in the dimly lit corridor by the open ship plank. Callum and Zade stood at the forefront, their Kaimari Warrior suits embodying both power and a profound sense of purpose.

"Descending in five," Kaden's voice reverberated through the ship's intercom, each word an unspoken promise of the battle that awaited us. "Be ready."

In the midst of the charged atmosphere, Isodel's lingering annoyance with me took form once again. She practically shoved an extra shield at me from the weapons closet, her insistence palpable in the gesture. I sighed softly, acquiescing to her persistence. Placing the shield bracelet onto Elara, who was already adorned with one, I asserted, "I don't need it, I'm telling you. This is the best technology, it curves to protect wherever bullets are firing at me."

Isodel's response was swift and reckless. A laser beam shot out from her wrist, aimed directly at me. In an instant, liquid metal erupted from my sleeves, swiftly forming an impenetrable shield around my face. The laser was absorbed into the technology, leaving no trace of its destructive intent.

The unified chorus of scolding voices rang out as everyone reacted to Isodel's impulsive act. Kaden, who had relinquished control of the ship, lunged at her in anger, only to be held back by Zade's restraining grip. Isodel shrugged with an almost nonchalant air. "She insisted it would save her."

Kaden's stern voice resonated, warning in its timbre. "I will be having a word with you."

As Isodel's eyes rolled, I hissed, "Let's go back to not speaking."

With an added edge to his voice, Kaden addressed Isodel, "As punishment, you'll be going first."

The ship's descent continued, gravity tugging us toward our impending battleground. The plank gradually extended, revealing the Lunarrii troops that awaited us below.

"I knew you were trying to kill me off," Isodel quipped with a wry wink to Kaden, her expression wry. He responded with a nod, his demeanor unflinching as he affirmed, "There is only the first," gesturing to the hostile forces that lay ahead.

With a rallying shout that resounded like a war cry, Callum's voice thundered, "And all that comes after!" The gunshots commenced, a cacophony mingling with the fervor of our resolve. Stepping forward, I embraced the challenge that awaited, my heart pounding in sync with the rhythm of the battle, ready to face whatever trials lay ahead on this perilous journey.

As the chaos unfurled around us on the industrial factory floor, I was struck by the precision of the plans Kaden had meticulously outlined the night before. Hours had been dedicated to briefing us on the floor plan, ensuring we understood the clear paths leading to our respective ships, and memorizing multiple routes to navigate in case of obstruction. His leadership had transformed us into a unit operating with the precision of a well-oiled machine.

The overseers of the factory, it seemed, harbored their own rebellion against the Empire. Their strategy involved inciting a simultaneous uprising as we infiltrated the facility. In their defiance, they aimed to let the Empire's own might turn against them, obliterating the very weapons they sought to produce.

Sleep had been elusive that night, as Kaden had pushed us to commit our paths to memory. One after another, we recited our designated routes to our ships until it became second nature. The instructions had been etched into my mind—right, right, left, under the main conveyor belt. Drawing upon the instincts honed by my time as Irina's Shadow, I had been the first to memorize not only my path but all three alternative routes.

Now, thrust into the heart of the present, the scene was a maelstrom of violence and chaos. The factory, designed to craft weapons of war, was a battleground where the lives of countless workers and the oppressive might of the Lunarrii Empire clashed. Amidst the tumult, molten lava from a towering tank spilled in a fiery cascade, a testament to the destructive nature of the Empire's ambitions.

The Lunarrii forces swarmed, but amid the tumult, Kaden's composure was palpable. Clad in his formidable Kaimari Warrior armor, Dawnblades in hand, he moved with a practiced grace. Each swing of his blades cleaved through the enemy ranks with a lethal precision that bespoke years of training and experience. Amid the chaos, his demeanor remained calm, an anchor in the storm.

As we fought our way toward our ships, the cacophony of battle echoed around us. Metal stairs led us to our escape, but the path was far from clear. Kaden's movements were a dance of calculated prowess. At one point, he effortlessly seized a Lunarrii assailant, hurling them over the precipice into the searing lava below. His every action was deliberate, each move calculated to safeguard us all.

I did my part, firing at the approaching enemies, but Kaden's swiftness outmatched my efforts. His shots were precise and lethal, effectively neutralizing any threat that dared to encroach. In the midst of the ferocious battle, I felt an impenetrable shield envelop me, a testament to Kaden's unwavering vigilance.

Amid the tumult of the battle, a sudden onslaught took me by surprise. An enemy soldier, swift and relentless, emerged from the chaos. Their blaster fire was unrelenting, and I stumbled backward, perilously close to the edge of a metal bridge that overlooked the seething torrent of molten lava below. Panic gripped me as the ground beneath my feet gave way, threatening to send me plummeting.

Just as the precipice seemed inevitable, a powerful force gripped my arm. Strong fingers encircled my wrist, their touch a lifeline. With an effortless strength that defied the chaos around us, Kaden hauled me back from the brink. The world seemed to slow as I regained my footing, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

"Stay close," his voice reached me through the cacophony, resolute and commanding. His grip remained firm on my arm, a steady anchor amidst the turmoil. There was a fire in his voice, a determination that spoke of an unyielding resolve to keep me safe.

With a nod of gratitude, I refocused on the battle ahead. Blaster fire whizzed by, and the clash of weapons reverberated through the air. Kaden's presence at my side was a testament to his unwavering protection. We navigated the metal walkways with a desperate urgency, every step bringing us closer to the ship that promised escape from this tumultuous battleground.
