#33:
I frowned, looking at the cheeky Mark puzzlement.
"I can't just get lost with you in the province of Matanzas," I protested.
Mark raised his eyebrows.
“Last time I looked, you were of legal age, Rosy.
"I am, but that doesn't mean that I do what I want. I live with my mother, and therefore I must respect her."
"No one said you mustn't. I told you to call her."
"No."
"No?"
“I already told you, Mark. You and Matt go to Varadero. " I moved, getting out of bed, and going to the bathroom to clean myself. I needed to run out of there, before it occurred to them to ride me in a rocket and send me to the moon. Again.
They knocked on the bathroom door, and I looked at it with a grimace.
"Rosy, please think about it." Mark whispered.
I rolled my eyes.
I had nothing to think about.
Obviously if I wanted to go to the most beautiful beach in Cuba with my…
Wait…
What were the twins to me?
Hmm?
Were both my boyfriends?
My lovers?
Or what?
***
Mark was grunting and braying all morning.
Protesting that surely I didn't accept because he asked me to, and that if his brother had asked me, I would have said yes.
pffff
I left the Montalvo house early, staying at the bus stop, I took three, but luckily I arrived at the uni before noon.
I started packing, folding and collecting all my belongings. And putting into my briefcase everything that up to that moment I had kept in my locker.
I looked at my room with a certain sadness, it was true that very unpleasant things had happened to me in it, but it was also true that those four walls had witnessed my happiness, and joy as I went through the year, and my frustrations, each time I passed with a minimal note.
My cell phone rang, and it was Matt.
I put it out loud, and continued collecting my belongings.
"Rosy, where are you?" he whispered, obviously nervous.
"Back in dorm. Why"
“Forgive that jerk Mark.
Wow.
That was new.
"He got too excited and anticipated events. I understand that you should ask your mother for permission to disappear, especially if you are going to do it with your boyfriend.
From behind I heard loud and clear as Mark protested. I was pissed off.
" In a few minutes I'll pick you up, and I'll take you home. Do you think it's OK?"
"You know I live thirty miles from here, right?"
"You know we have a car, right?"Matt growled
I rolled my eyes.
Anyway, all I had to do was pick up my books. And I even thought that they would weight too much to take them inside travel bag, when I took the propaedeutic book , t completely fell apart, leaving only the cover in my hand.
I frowned.
"What was that?" the good twin asked me.
"One of my books from the bookshelf, it just brocke open in my hand."
Matt laughed.
"Hang on a minute. " I whispered, leaving the cell phone on the table.
That was most bizarre.
Because the book was hollow.
Someone had cut out the pages , leaving enough space to hide a lot of valuables inside.
I mean like twenty gold chains. Rings, earrings, dollar bills, and even five cell phones!
My mind began to spin, trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
At the beginning of the course, there were multiple complaints and reports from patients who said that valuables had been stolen from them at the hospital.
Cell phones, gold chains...
I knelt next to that pile of incriminating evidence, and with my fingers I separated one particular object that caught my eye.
The ring was the largest of all, probably solid gold, and had the Freemason symbol on it. I swallowed dry.
It was Mat's lost ring!
I knew you would find him." a voice that I recognized instantly commented, and when I looked up, I saw the murderer in front of me. Giving me the most macabre and creepy smile I've ever seen. Because it was a mocking face.
"So, it was you." I whispered.
"Oh no, Rosario. It was you. You see, Amalia and I… let's just say that we got along very well, and we both understood that we wouldn't have the future we deserved in this piece of shit country."
"And then, you decided to rob patients and even your colleagues?" I protested.
"Oh, you won't believe how easy is to disappear things like that inside the hospital. It was a piece of cake, until Amalia got greedy, and refused to tell me where she had hidden everything."
"In my book. Why?"
In case someone got suspicious, or they made a search, i suppose. They would find it all among your belongings, and therefore you would be framed."
I could'nt believe it.
I looked at the boy I had liked for so long, and I didn't recognize him.
Instead, he was looking at some kind of cruel, criminal demon.
"You killed her, right?"
"You're wrong, Ramona," he mumbled. " I already told you it was you. Amalia discovered that you were sending photos to her boyfriend, and she confronted you. You argued, you came to blows, you pushed her, and the book fell, revealing everything she was hiding, and things got worse. Anyway, you strangle her, in self-defense, of course."
"That's a lie!"
He shrugged.
"It doesn't matter if it's true or false. The truth is that when they find you dead, with your veins open and bled, no one will be surprised. After all, everyone knows that you've been up and down nervous throughout the course. In depression, with sudden mood swings, aggressive. And best of all, taking antidepressants ."
"What does that have to do with anything?!"
“Oh, everything. Believe me. People with suicidal ideation always shows thei symptoms of distress."
I swallowed, taking a step back, looking down at the sharp scalpel in his hand.
"No one will believe that I have committed suicide. I just graduated, I'm happy, I'm..."
"Oh, but everyone saw your little boyfriend licking someone else's face last night at the party, right?"
I took another step back.
"And everyone in the group thinks you're obsessed with the Montalvos, especially Matt. So when he betrayed you so painfully and publicly, you didn't think about it much, maybe you just did it to scare him, maybe you just wanted to do it to make him feel guilty, but in the end, you opened your veins too deep, and... well... " he gives me a macabre smile .
"Don't do this, please. Please. I won't tell anybody. Just take all of that, and go. I..."
"I would like to, mind you. I really would to, but I can't. You are not to be trusted. I warned you to stay away from Matt. Do you know how nervous I was thinking about him walking in and out of here? How if he goy to rummaging through your belongings and found the loot."
"Did you know that all this was there?"
"Aren't you paying attention to what I'm saying? I already told you I had no idea where that bitch amalia hid it all."
"Don't do this, someone will find out, it will be known. Mildred might even suspect it and…
"That fool won't suspect a thing, and do you know why? Well, because I'm not going to involve her in any of this. What's more, I'll wait until I graduate and follow Amalia's plan. I will get out of this country."
I denied, seeing that he was approaching me.
"I'm sorry, but for me to get away with all this, you must die," he muttered, lunging at me.
