CHAPTER 15: BRINGING HER HOME

CASEY’S POV

I froze when I heard that statement. It felt as if a bullet had been shot in my heart. I didn’t know what to say. I saw Lia look at me, she too was speechless so it was up to me to say something, after all I was the reason why she was separated from her family. I was so stupid not to realize that very soon she would be wondering why she had to be switching houses with me and Lia and not being able to go home.

I heard Leo murmur Awkward under his breath as Lia punched him. Indeed it was awkward after all.

Astoria turned to look at me as I gulped hard and said,

“Actually your parents told you to come live with me because they were going on a trip just as Lia’s parents are on a trip too.” I hastily said getting the hate glares from Lia and Leo about why I had lied, but I had no choice. I had no idea what to say happened to her parents and I couldn’t say they were dead if they were still alive and alive when they might be dead. So on a trip was a safe answer for now.

“Oh really, I can’t wait to see them them, I have forgotten what they look like. She with with a hint of excitement as Lia cut in and said,

“Hey Astoria, why don’t you get to my room and pick up the few things you have, you don’t want to leave them behind, do you?” Lia asked as Astoria shook her head.

“I will be back in a jiffy.” She said to me and skipped out of the room happy.

“Things? What things?” I asked facing Lia who replied,

“Never mind about that, why did you lie to her? You should have told her the truth.” She said as I took a deep breath and said,

“I know I should have, but….I didn’t want ti say anything that might risk causing a trauma for her. I don’t know what to say so I gave her the safest answer I could think of. Once I know more and she has fully adapted to our world. I will tell her the truth, but can’t you see she has the mind of a 12 year old.” I said as Leo placed a hand on Lia’s shoulder and said,

“I think we should allow Casey to lead on this now. Remember what happened in the kitchen some moment ago.” He said which piqued my curiosity.

“What happened before I came here?” I asked already on high alert as long as it concerned Astoria. Blame me but I felt responsible for her.

“Oh it was nothing, she just got startled by the fire, I think she has a bad memory with fire, because she was in a trance and shaky.” Lia said with a shrug as I got angry and said,

“Why didn’t you tell me this earlier?” I yelled standing up as she stood up too and said,

“Well I was going to, till you lied. I wonder who is supposed to be angrier at who now? Besides how was I supposed to know seeing a fire would freak her out.” Lia retorted as I saw that I was over reacting and Lia had actually been helping me all this while.

“I am sorry, I didn’t mean to lose my cool. I am just….I am sorry okay?” I said as she looked at me and then sighed,

“It is cool. You don’t have to apologize, I understand and I am sorry too for losing my cool.” She said as Leo stood up and said,

“Ugh, can the both of you stop it now, this is giving me some weird feelings.” He said faking gagging as I laughed and swatted at his arm.

”I am back.” Astoria announced as she came back with a little bag and stood beside me. Out of curiosity, I took a peep inside and saw that it contained some pieces of paper with drawings scribbled on them, some short novels, clothes that Lia probably gave out and sandals.

“Did you get everything?” Lia asked Astoria who nodded her head proudly, as if she had done a huge deal and deserved to be patted on the head for it. I watched with a smile as she said,

“Yes, Lia. I packed everything that you gave me. I took a look around and saw that there was nothing left.” It was nice to see how she was speaking coherently. Someone seeing her now wouldn’t believe that she didn’t know what a table was two days ago.

“Atta girl. I am going to miss you, you know. Make sure that you come and visit us some time okay?” She said as she nodded her head.

“Come on girl. I need to hug this out.” Leo said as he edged closer and pulled Astoria in tight hug and said,

’I am going to miss playing games with you.”

“Don’t you mean that you are going to miss beating me at every game.” She said as I burst out laughing. She was becoming good. After Leo let her go, Lia came forward and practically crushed her in the hug, even I hadn’t been hugged that way before. I thought to myself a bit jealous. I understand Lia’s motives though. She had become used to Astoria and was beginning to care for her as a little sister. It wasn’t her fault, Astoria was actually quite likeable. She had this innocent aura that seemed to envelop her and makes people around her just to protect her.

“Okay, it is time to go. It is already getting to my curfew and I still have to explain to my mum about….you know.” I said with a loud clap cutting their hugging session short.

“No probs, make sure you text me as soon as you get home, okay?” Lia said as she led us outside and I nodded my head.
