"Does Dominic know?" I can only imagine the chaos going on inside Janet's mind.
She shook her head and set the plate aside. "Neither does Pops. And I should tell him before she sees him. Heaven knows how he would react."
"I'm coming with you."
"No."
"Come on Janet. I would still see Dominic as time goes, what difference will this make?"
"I just-"
"Besides, I can't sit back and apply make up when something this huge is happening."
She sighed and dragged me by the hand and led me out of the room leaving others staring at us weirdly.
"How do you think she knows? We kept this ceremony well from the prying media."
"We'll find out soon." And we both walked into the elevator which brought us to the ground floor in no time.
"You are here," Quintin met us on the way as did Stephen who looked distraught.
"Does Dominic know?"
"No. We left without him knowing."
"Good. Let's get rid of her before he sees her. She could use him as a channel back into our lives."
I frowned. Wasn't that a bit manipulative? I get that she doesn't like the woman but that is her. What if others desire to see her again?
"There she is." My eyes followed Stephen's line of sight and I saw her.
She was just like in the pictures. Face and body shape similar to Janet's, she stood at the very entrance observing and most probably waiting for someone to approach her.
Janet went first, charging towards the woman.
"Let's hurry before Janet does something drastic," said Quintin.
"What are you doing here?" I heard Janet ask toughly. Her mother swung her head her way and her smile increased.
"Janet Penelope Powers. How much-"
"Don't even try to patronise me. I asked what you are doing here."
Then her mother's eyes went sad and she looked ahead and saw us. "Quintin, Stephen." Then she frowned. "Where is Dominic? Where's my baby?"
"Answer the question ma'am." Janet sure was doing a good job at making the woman feel terrible.
"You want to know why I came back?" she asked and shifted her stance. "I know I wronged all of you including your father. So, I am here to make amends. I want to apologize for what I did and how I did it."
Janet laughed unbelievably, her arms crossing. "Don't you think you are a little too late?"
"I know I am. But-"
"Who are you?" Dominic's voice cut her short and I felt his heat envelope me as he found his stance behind me.
The woman's face brightened. "Dominic. You are so handsome."
"I don't believe I know you," his deep voice claimed.
The woman sighed. She realised the exact situation of things and that saddened her.
"Wait a minute..." Dominic left my behind and walked towards her. "Are you... my mother?"
She seemed to have found hope, so she smiled and nodded. "I am your mother."
I could picture Dominic's gaze figuring her out. "So, what are you doing here?"
"I came to-"
"Did you come to inflict pain? Most especially on father?"
Dominic's commanding aura settled into the air and took over from Janet's anger. The woman shook a bit as she replied, "N-no... I came for the ehm- I came to-"
"You came to cause chaos right? Didn't you do enough when you left earlier?" Okay, I think Dominic's words would be the most hurtful for the woman.
"Why are you even here on a joyous day? Do you intend to make us sad? Because your presence is not good for us."
"I-"
"You know what is suspicious?" His hands went behind him. "You could have come around on any other day. But you chose today. Do you really intend to ruin my day just like you almost ruined my father's days?"
Her hand quivering, she brought it to her lip as though that would control the tears about to fall.
"Do me a favour mother." His back turned to her as he walked away. "Leave this place."
"Domi..." She broke into tears.
"Please leave." Janet didn't seem so angry anymore. Instead she looked a bit sad.
Dominic walked to me and I reached for his hand and squeezed it. He was about to hug me to his side when we heard another masculine voice cry, "Nicole!" with shock.
It was Dom's father and he didn't look like he was taking her presence well. As he made to speak with his eyes looking distraught, he let out another cry and clutched his chest area.
Next thing we knew, he was unconscious in Stephen's hands.
"We need to get him to the hospital," Stephen cried as he checked his breathing.
Quintin jogged towards the entrance. "There is one few blocks away. Let me go and get my car key."
"I have mine with me," came Dominic's contribution. I looked at his face, his jaws were clutching. Then at his hands, they were trying so hard to not shake.
As he tossed the car key to Quintin, he went on to help Stephen carry their father.
"I hope you are happy," a sobbing Janet told her mother as she walked to where I was. "I will get Tiffany to watch the children. Go with them to the hospital. I will join you later."
I nodded and did as she asked, my insides in chaos.
~
We were all in front of his ward swimming in silence as the doctor just spoke to us and told us he was lucky to have survived the cardiac arrest.
You can only imagine how strong of a love he still had for the woman after all these years.
Sighing, I grabbed Dom's huge hands and gave him warmth the way I could.
"What will happen to the wedding now?" Quintin asked.
Janet, who had joined us already looked towards the clock above us. "It is almost midnight," she stated.
"We can always reschedule the wedding till Father gets better, " I said as that was the only reasonable thing.
"Maybe." Janet sighed.
After a short silence, Dominic said, "We are getting married tomorrow."
"How?" Even others found his statement a bit odd.
"Pops won't be able to attend you know, so it will be better to postpone it."
"No," Dominic insisted. "I am getting married to you tomorrow. I know Father won't be there. That is why we should change the location."
"How do you mean?" Stephen asked.
"Let's have the ceremony right here. In Father's room."
Janet chuckled. "Are you crazy?"
"Maybe." He shrugged then looked at me who was still staring at him in disbelief. "What I know is that I don't want to waste a minute more. I want to get married to Grace tomorrow itself."
"How is that going to work?"
Quintin butted in and replied Janet. "Why won't it? We will just call the priest here, get the children from the hotel, call Grace's uncle here and do what is needed within minutes. By then, Father would be awake, so every member of our family will not miss it."
Dominic smiled. "That is the plan."
"Pops room will be too small though," Janet said.
"Then we will relocate him to a bigger room."
My expression from earlier soon turned to a huge smile as I pictured it.
"Will the reception still hold though?"
"Yes. After Father is fully recovered," Quintin replied Janet.
Then, Stephen got up. "Okay people, up on your feet. We have a hospital wedding to plan within hours."
I couldn't wait to see how that would turn out.
~
Six hours later, I was in my gown waiting for my uncle to come get me.
It was crazy how it all happened.
But in summary, I am getting married in a hospital ward.
That is a memory I won't ever forget.
"Are you ready?" I heard Uncle Stanley call from the other side.
"Yes." I took one more look at my simple make up that Tiffany worked out in the mirror.
As I walked out of the restroom, I felt my heart begin to pound. It really was about to happen.
I was about to get married to Dominic Powers.
"You look gorgeous." Uncle Stanley hooked his arm with mine and we both made our way through chatting doctors towards Father's ward.
Before we entered, he knocked the door and someone opened it.
Everyone was there. The few people we called for the ceremony were all standing, some in a corner, some by Father's elevated bed. Their presence made my heart surge.
Then my eyes fell on Dominic's shoes as I made it to his front. Slowly, my head came up and our eyes met.
Gulping hard as his smile grew, I resisted the impulse to hug him hard.
"Beloved," the priest began as wedding tunes played underneath. ",we are all gathered here to witness this joining of man and woman."
The man asked for the rings and they were brought to him by Ruby who couldn't contain her smile. Before she went back to where she was standing, she hugged me by the waist and I melted some more.
"Is there anyone here who is against this union? Speak now or forever hold your breath."
"I will break-"
The priest glared at Dominic who was about to swear. "Very well then." He handed Dominic my ring. "Do you, Dominic Powers take Grace Sands to be your lawfully wedded wife to be with in-"
"I do. To everything you haven't said, I do."
"You should let me finish."
"Sorry." It was weird to see him so jumpy and apologetic. But I found it cute. I would tease him with it later.
Then the priest handed me Dom's ring. "Do you, Grace Sands take Dominic Powers to be your lawfully wedded husband to be with in..."
He looked my way as though to see if I would cut him short like Dominic did.
I smiled and said, "I do. To everything you haven't said, I do."
He closed the book in his hand which he rarely looked into. "Well, you both know what comes after anyway. By the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife."
My heart pounded as my hands shook as I put the ring in its position on his finger. He did the same but less shaky then me.
"You may kiss the bride."
Dominic smiled and leaned closer.
"No! There are kids here. Postpone your french hungry kiss," Janet said causing everyone to chuckle.
"Well, a simple kiss it is," the priest said and Dominic sent warmth to the side of my face with a simple, love filled peck.
"Yay!" The whole room went berserk and they all jubilated as Dominic and I held each other.
Suddenly, the door swung open.
"You are disturbing us next door." The nurse at the door had her eyes bulging when she saw the crowd. "Keep... it... down." She looked so confused as she walked out.
"Grace?" Dominic whispered into my ear.
"Hmm?"
"Now that you are Mrs Powers, what do we so first?"
"Cuddle?"
"Cuddle?" He was taken aback.
"Yes. I want to enjoy this moment a little more before reality comes dancing in." It was as though nobody else was in the room, the way we conversed with smiles.
He unhooked my hold and held my hand. "Let's go and find a bed."
"To do what?" My head painted an image and I felt hot.
"To cuddle. Picture this, you on my chest, our legs wrapped together..."
I pulled him out of the room. "Let's go and find that bed."
He gave a deep laugh and whipped me off the floor, my whole body in his arms.
"Let's be like this forever."
I kissed him hard and said my smile not breaking once, "We'll see about that."
And as our eyes met, nothing more was said.
