Chapter 34

I glance at Ryo, jerking my chin at him. Ryo shoots across the room, sending a kick behind his knee and he drops into lunge. Botan seizes him, wresting him under control.

"I radioed for help; reinforcements will be here any second."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"You are," I affirm. "Because I have a jamming field over this entire base. An EMP that knocked out every form of electronic communication."

Gaza huffs like a feral dog, resisting against Ryo's siege.

I observe the theatric display patiently, waiting for him to tire himself out.

"What do you want?" He thrashes relentlessly. "What belonged to me was stolen, and I had every right to do what I had to so I could get it back." He looks into my eyes brazenly. "It's not my fault you got in my way."

The searing fingers of wrath seize me in a chokehold, something all-consuming overpowers my will to hold back. All traces of mortality and humanity scorched into nothingness. Something without name and without bound, smouldering where a heart used to beat.

"You came for what is mine. You signed your own covenant with death the moment you tried to get your hands on her. But before I spill your entrails." I saunter around the hostage-held family. "You're going to watch me do it to your family."

Gaza roars a slew of cusses; his wife wails another ear-shattering wail.

I go behind the girl, blade still in hand. I dismiss the man holding her with a nod. He steps away. And I grab her neck, holding her head back, evaluating her. Bronzed olive skin, straight black hair, and a curvaceous body on the thick side. She squirms futilely, and I give her a silent reproach, tightening my grip on her neck. She falls deadly still.

The opposite of my Sakura. The thought her drives my fury to a depthless place.

"No... your daughter has more worth to me alive."

Gaza hurls his heft forward, but Ryo restrains him, yanking him back.

"You're going to keep her like some fucking trophy?"

I free a chuckle. "I have no use for her. But I know many bidders that would pay an exorbitant amount for a piece like this." I grin at the pure horror etched on her father's face. "She will live. But you will die knowing that she will be raped and ravaged until they chuck out her worn-out body. And it's all because of you."

Tears flood Gaza's eyes and he starts begging, in harmony with his wife who pleads for their daughter's life. I tell one of them to take her away, and they do, her cries echoing from a distance. The little boys are terrified and confused as to what is happening. Gaza's pleads devolve into a smattering sob; words garbled in his uncontrollable weeping.

I squat behind the boy. Their dual cries soar to a new pitch and volume.

I stroke a few stray hairs from his face, trembling as if touched by ice. "I've always wanted a son." My palm covers his forehead and I force him to rest the back of his head against my shoulder.

"I beg of you, Orian! PLEASE!"

I slide my hand down to cover his eyes. "Let him live so he can take revenge later?" My fingertips drum on his temple lightly. "If I free you... how do I know that you won't retaliate?"

"Because my family means the world to me." Continual tears streaming down, sacrificing his dignity for the hope of appealing to my empathy. "I give you my word. You won't hear from me again; I'll revoke the bounty and you can keep the book."

"Do you know who the next bearer is?"

"No."

My sword flashes, the edge meeting his son's throat threateningly.

Gaza shakes his head vigorously. "I swear! All I know is the bearer's beholden is linked to an old rich family, I went as far as tracking it back to Greece. I swear to you." He sobs again, his torso bopping. " I swear that's all I know."

I ease my grip. "And I believe you."

The blade slices into the skin, unravelling a neat strip of red, blood cascading. The small body goes limp before it thumps to the ground. His brother shrieks a deafening cry along with his family. I permanently silence his twin by giving him a matching slit.

The mother is intoxicated by grief, howling and flailing like a fish out of water.

I appear in front of her.

She curses at me in Spanish before she switches so I can understand her. "You're a soulless monster! Worse than the devil!"

I smile at her, my tongue running across my lower lip. "Tell me... can you take six inches?" I ask before plunging the blade into her soft stomach. She chokes on a gasp. "How about eight?" Penetrating deeper.

She convulses, spewing out blood, Gaza yelling out her name as if it would help. I rip out the blade that's drenched in red. She drops to her side, fixing her unblinking stare on nothing. I straighten, stretching my neck from side to side, invigorated by a pleasurable sensation. One that I've been starved of for too long. I walk back to Gaza; sapped of his strength, his will to live destroyed.

"I have an army of men that will avenge of me," he seethes, unbridling the last of his ebbing fervour. "Nowhere on this planet will be safe for you, not for you, the girl or anyone else that you care about. My brother will come after you—" his voice cracks, each word shakier than the next, "—and he'll make what you did to me look like a show of mercy."

I raise the blade again. The tip draws down his bulging belly, ready to make an incision that will gut him open so he can watch his insides fall out.

"Let them all come for me. Because in the end, I will always be the last one remaining."
