Chapter 75

**Emilia POV
**

I jerk and gasp at the bucket of water cascading over me.

I am strapped to a metal chair with my hands restrained behind me. I cough uncontrollably, spewing out water and before I can even become fully cognizant. The metal chair is yanked back ninety degrees before a cloth covers my face, slapped over my nose and mouth. Another jet of water gushes up my nostrils, the burn, the recoil, every vessel and airway flooded making it feel like I’m drowning as if submerged beneath crushing depths. The cloth is ripped away from my face and the chair is fixed upright—a blast of breath—I suck in a jagged inhale, shudders wracking my frame as I cough violently.

Agent Stonewall dismisses the other man.

Once he leaves, he appears in front of me. “Look at you,” he says with a slow, pervasive and perverted scan of my body. “So wet for me.”

“Is this how you conduct your interrogations?”

“No one above board really cares when it’s terrorists and traitors being examined.”

“I am neither.”

I shake my head, letting it hang as soaked strands curtain my face. He grips my hair and whips up my head so I’m forced to face him, glaring up at his sadistic expression, smiling wickedly.

“Time will tell, 007”

He releases his hold so harshly my head turns to the side, wisps of hair clinging to my skin, obscuring my vision. I straighten my head, blowing air to try to kick away stray strands. He strolls thoughtfully in front of me with the gate of the cell behind him, hands clasped behind his back.

“Why did you disregard protocol?”

“To build rapport,” I say breathlessly. My chest inflates with a deep breath and I take a lung-filling moment to respire. “I would’ve lost trust if I was wired or I had a team tailing me. And I was right, he was tracking me the whole way to make sure I wasn’t being followed. It was a good call. He was beginning to trust me and that would have opened up a new threshold we need to hit every objective. He is our key to her.”

He stops then turns to come stand right before my spread legs. I can’t even close them because my ankles are secured to the front legs of the chair. Stonewall sinks to his haunches so he can stare slightly up at me.

“Why not relay that? It was your call, if you needed it, the bureau would have backed off.” His eyes lower languidly to my crotch. His hands raise to settle on my knees. “Instead you took him home.”

His hands run idly up up my thighs and I jolt, lurching forward threateningly.

“Get your hands off me.”

“You sheltered and cared for him for days. And let’s forget that you helped him evade capture. You ran and had we not interjected. You have the means to spirit him away undetected with a new alias. I wonder, did you shut us both out or just our department?”

“I’m sure you collected everything in that apartment.” I try to wiggle my legs but his hands are dead bolted to my thighs. “You will find no correspondence between them and I.”

“So you distrust us all?”

“That’s because the bureau has their own agenda,” I shout into his face, the cords in my voice strained. “They really don’t care if Hadassah is innocent or not. They’re unnerved because they fear what she knows—they fear what’s in that ledger. And what other compromising intel it holds. I didn’t tell because I was protecting my assets. Hadassah and Calum were never a threat. They are your only way to the truth of that ledger that what everyone is afraid of.”

His hands stop to seize the top of my thighs, stealing a flinch—my muscles clamping. “You really think we can use them to get to it—whatever it is?”

Unsure of the implications, I nod uneasily. “For a fair trade. Immunity and protection, no less than they deserve for the whole truth of what they know.”

Stonewall stands to full height. “Perhaps that can be arranged.”

“Where is Calum?”

“Safe,” he says cryptically.

I glance at myself. “And how long am I to be detained?”

He mulls it over with mock thought. “Debating, I quite like the sight of you tied up.”

Disgust makes my inside shrivel. “Where is Calum?”

“He’s alive, and that’s all you need to know.”
