Just In Time For Dinner
Grayson's POV(Continued)
The sun had been banished for the day by the time the huge pointed tips of the coven’s gate came into view. I had driven past the beginning of their territory ten minutes ago but I was still nowhere close to getting to the main building. “Call Jo.” I ordered my computer even as I turned the headlights on. It was getting dark pretty fast and I’ve yet to see another soul.
Entering the Blood Shadow coven without invitation was trespassing but I was banking on the fact that they couldn’t attack me in the presence of Josie and if she claimed me as her guest, then I would be in the clear.
It rang and rang but still no one picked up. I drove up behind enormous black gates that gave no clue whatsoever to what lay behind them, only that it must be extremely vast, given that the walls were long enough to cover an estate. Fvck it. I waited for the call to go into voicemail before leaving a message. “I’m standing in front of black gates deep in the middle of nowhere because of you. The least you can do is pick up your call before I’m arrested and sued for trespassing.” or worse, so much worse.
It would appear that I was closer to the Blood Shadow than Jo was, seeing as how she wasn’t here yet, but she couldn’t be far behind. My phone blared suddenly, alerting me of an incoming call. Jo’s name flashed across my screen. Thank goodness.
"Hello?”
“Where are you?” I cut straight to the chase.
“Um, on my way to see Vladimir Sedof?” Was she asking me or telling me?
“Why didn’t you wait for me? You knew I would have gone with you.”
“Didn’t think you would want to, not with the way you left the house two days ago. You were incommunicado throughout yesterday!”
“Sorry, I got caught up in work.” I’d spent most of the morning setting up a meeting with Stravos, my handler for later that night at a bar, thenI’d spent the rest of the day working out at the gym and hiding from the world. “But I’m here now. Where are you? It's seven on the dot. you are late.”
“Uh, no I’m not. I just got to Vladimir’s house. I’m getting out of the car right now.” She was? But I’d seen no other cars -or any signs of movement- ever since I got here. Opening the car door, I got out and walked a few meters aways from my car to get a better view of my surroundings.
“You are here already or on your way?” There wasn’t any sign of movement on her side. “My car is parked next to the gates that go all the way to the high heavens and I’m standing next to it.” If I couldn’t see her, then perhaps she could seek me out.
“Gates? What gates?”
“The gates at the front of Vladimir’s house?”
“There hadn’t been any gates the last time we came here.”
The last time? Someone dropped an anvil in the pit of my stomach. “Where’s here exactly?”
“The house of Pule, the fetish house I followed you to three days ago?”
Oh, sweet Jesus. The anvil spread and was joined by an anchor.
“B-but that was not the address on the card he gave to you!” I spluttered incredulously. I’d spied that business card and the adress led to his coven damn it!
“Yeah, the meeting point changed.” What the fvck? “I have to go now. I will let you know how it goes. Bye.” She hung up on me and all I could do was stand in stupefied silence.
Josie was the breaker -the first in a thousand years- and she could undo the spell trapping Vladimir -a spell that several supes and humans sacrificed their lives to put in place, the very spell keeping everyone safe- just by willing it and she is meeting up with him at the House of Pulé in Clovis while I was here standing at the front of the Blood Shadow’s coven in Oakhurst.
"Holy motherfvcking shit!" I yelled with impotent rage, fisting my hair in anger.
I slammed my hands down on the roof of the truck before I thought better of it. Ringing pain shot up my arms and brought clarity back to me. There wasn’t time to lose my mind. I dialed Jo’s number again.
“Yeah?”
“I need you to wait for me, I’m on my way to you now.”
“You are?” Her delighted voice cooled almost immediately. “but you just told me I was late. Mr. Sedof is waiting.” He could keep waiting for all eternity as far as I was concerned.
“I know that but I don’t want you to go to him alone, so wait right there.”
“Okay.” She acquiesced softly.
I hung up and turned back to my car and halted in my tracks. There was a tall, slim lady lounging against my car door. She wore a white undershirt and blue suspenders that doubled as a mini gown, a bowtie and her hair was in pigtails. She even had red fucking ribbons tied into her pigtails. All she needed was a backpack and she would be ready for class. Her face could even pass for a teenager, but I knew what she was. A vamp.
“Hello there hunter. Nice of you to pay us a visit. It is bad manners not to inform your host before visiting though.” She drawled, her bright rep lipstick stretching into a pleased smile that somehow didn't reach her brown eyes. Her words were slightly accented, Russian, perhaps.
“My apologies for that. It seems like I caught you at a bad time, I will get out of your way now.”
I made a move to get past her but another vamp held my hands. I whirled back to find that I was now surrounded by three of them. Two silent males were behind me and another one flanked the deranged vamp. Shit. My day just went from horrible into epic disaster territory.
“You came at the perfect time. We were just about to have dinner. Please join us.” I could very well imagine what they were having for dinner and I refused to have any part of it Sorry bitch, but I'm not on the menu.
I tensed my body, getting ready to defend myself. “I just ate and I have somewhere I really must get to.” I shoved her away and opened my door.
Pale, dainty fingers clamped on my wrist with the strength of an iron and cold brown eyes blocked my view with a chilling smile. "I must insist you stay." Her words were soft but her eyes reflected none of the false warmth in her voice.
I snatched my hands back forcefully -I really couldn't stand to be touched by any of them. Putting the car at my back, I put the blondie with iron strength -she was obviously the leader- in my line of sight. I felt around behind me until I removed the gun hidden on my body and pointed it at them. "It has been a dreadful week and I'm running low on patience. Move back and let me go and there will be no bloodshed."
"Aww, but I like bloodshed." She even had the gall to bat her long eyelashes at me while twirling her hair. "Whatcha got there hunter? A new toy?"
In reply, I shot at the male vamp next to her. The silver bullet did its job and burned the vermin to ashes within a few seconds. He didn't even get the chance to scream before the orange fire licked away at his skin and bones.
She watched dispassionately as her colleague was turned to cinder before turning to me with her ever present smile. Gods, I hated that amused curl of her lip more than anything in the world. I would give anything to wipe it off.
"You and I are going to have a lot of fun together." She taunted with another eerie smile.
The rise of her steeled boot was the last thing I saw before it knocked against my skull with the force of a battering ram and the world turned dark.
