Keeping you in one peice

Ivery Clark POV

The door swung open with a force that made my heart skip, and in walked the devil. Alrigo Valerie King, with Dominic beside him. The victory practically dripped from their presence, looking every bit the ruthless mafia men they were.

"Back so soon?" I started, my voice steadier than I expected. My gaze locked on Alrigo, who had stopped mid-stride.

"I was right. Wasn't I? The dockyard, the weapons. You won because of me."

Alrigo's lips curled into something between a smirk and a snarl. He took a step closer, his towering figure casting a shadow over mine.

"You think that scraps of information make you indispensable?" Alrigo leaned down, his eyes gleaming with something dark. "You may have given me a piece of the puzzle, Ivery, but I would have won with or without you."

"Then why did you listen? Why take my advice?" I challenged.

His hand shot out, gripping my chin with a force that made me gasp. "Because I like to see what you'll do when you think you hold power, only to rip it away."

"I may be a pawn, but even pawns can shift the tide of the game," I said softly.

He leaned in closer, his breath ghosting over my skin. "You're lucky I like your defiance. It's the only thing keeping you in one piece."

"I don't care what you think of me. If I gave you what you need, I deserve—"

"What you deserve?" Alrigo's laugh was dark, cruel. "You're delusional. You owe. Your gratitude. Your obedience. Your silence."

"How many times I have to tell you, they are not my people and I'm not a goddamn spy. If I were, I wouldn't have given a clue to a bastard like you."

In a second he grabbed me by my neck and pulled me to him. "You insult me like that again, and I'll make you wish you never born again, Ivery."

"I want freedom," I said quickly. "The freedom to meet my mother, to live like a regular person. No cages. No locked doors."

"After all you've done, you think you can bargain?" His fingers brushed against my collarbone—a deceptively gentle touch. "I own this game, and you're barely a piece on the board."

"Whether you admit it or not, you wouldn't have succeeded without me. Let me visit my mother. Let me have a taste of normalcy. That's all I'm asking."

The storm brewing behind his eyes sent every survival instinct in me screaming for caution. His hand shot out, gripping my wrist with unrelenting force as he pushed me to the bed.

"Leave," Alrigo said curtly to Dominic, his lethal eyes fixed only on me.

Dominic hesitated before nodding stiffly and departing. The door shut behind him, leaving the room steeped in silence, and Alrigo's eyes locked onto me, the predatory gleam even sharper than ever.
