Chapter Sixty-Four: The Weight of Truth
“Luther!” Liam’s voice echoed off the stone walls of the underground lab, but his brother didn’t stop.
He stormed through the exit without so much as a glance back. The door slammed behind him, leaving silence in his wake.
Liam cursed under his breath, frustration simmering in his veins as he turned back to Dorian.
The doctor was watching him with a troubled expression, his hands folded tightly behind his back. There was something in his eyes that made Liam’s wolf bristle—something worse than just concern.
“What?” Liam demanded, his patience fraying by the second.
Dorian hesitated for a fraction of a second before sighing. “Your brother has always been quick to temper,” he muttered, rubbing his temples. “If he does not get that under control quickly, it could result in the death of your mate.”
A guttural growl ripped from Liam’s chest, his claws extending slightly as his wolf Al snarled within him. “Watch your words,” Liam warned, his voice dropping into a deadly tone.
Dorian didn’t even flinch. He had been around too many Alphas to be intimidated so easily. “You need to hear this,” he pressed. “Word will get out about Charlie. About her immunity.”
Liam clenched his fists, his body rigid.
“She’s different, Alpha. That kind of secret doesn’t stay buried for long. No matter who you threaten, or what you do, people will find out about her.”
Liam already knew that. And yet, hearing Dorian say it aloud made it real in a way he hadn’t been ready for.
“When people find out she’s immune, they will come,” Dorian continued. “Some will beg for her help. Others will see her as a weapon.”
Liam’s blood ran cold. The very thought of someone trying to take his mate away made his vision blur at the edges. He wanted to tear through anyone who dared to think of touching her.
Al was already clawing at him, begging for blood.
Liam exhaled sharply, struggling to keep himself in check. He wanted to believe that their pack would stay loyal, that the wolves under their rule would never betray them. But power was a dangerous thing.
Desperate wolves did desperate things.
And there was no denying that their world was growing more desperate by the day.
Liam turned sharply, his decision made. “We must increase patrols around the borders,” he announced, already making his way toward the exit. “No one gets in or out without approval.”
“Alpha, wait.” Dorian’s voice rang out behind him, sharp and urgent.
Liam barely suppressed a growl as he turned back, eyes flashing. “I do NOT have time for this,” he ground out.
Dorian moved to stand between him and the door. He bared his neck slightly in submission, but he didn’t step aside. “We have to be smart when it comes to our Luna,” Dorian said firmly.
Liam’s body was trembling with the effort to stay calm. His wolf was practically foaming at the mouth, itching for an outlet for the growing rage inside of him. “Step aside, NOW,” he growled.
But Dorian didn’t move. Instead, he said something that made Liam go completely still. “You need to be honest with her.”
Liam’s breath came out slow and sharp through his nose. “What are you talking about?”
Dorian exhaled heavily, shaking his head. “Charlie doesn’t understand what she’s done.”
Liam’s chest heaved, his teeth clenched so tightly his jaw ached.
“She thinks she was just helping that little girl,” Dorian continued. “And in a way, she was. But she doesn’t understand the consequences of her actions. She doesn’t understand that the second word gets out about what she is, she will become the most hunted wolf in existence.”
Liam’s vision blurred red.
“Her heart is too big, Alpha,” Dorian said quietly. “She will keep throwing herself into danger unless you make her understand what’s at stake.”
Liam turned away sharply, his hands shaking.
He knew that Charlie’s selflessness would be her downfall. He knew that the moment she saw another sick child, another suffering wolf, she would do it all over again—she would risk herself without a second thought.
And if they didn’t stop her, if they didn’t protect her from her own kindness…
She would get herself killed.
Liam clenched his fists.
“If it were up to me,” he muttered darkly, “I’d lock her away in our room and never let her leave.”
Dorian’s face was unreadable. “You could try,” he mused. “But you and I both know that would destroy her.”
Liam let out a bitter laugh. “You think I don’t know that?”
Keeping Charlie safe meant taking away the freedom she had only just started to taste.
And he couldn’t do that to her.
Dorian sighed. “Then you need to talk to her, Liam. Really talk to her. She needs to understand that this isn’t just about her anymore.”
Liam turned back toward the exit, his patience completely frayed.
Dorian stepped aside this time, his message delivered.
Liam’s footsteps were heavy as he stalked down the hallway, his mind racing. He had no idea how he was going to do this. Charlie wasn’t just their mate. She was their Luna. But she had been treated like nothing for so long that she didn’t see herself the way they did.
The way the world would.
She was powerful. She was rare. She was untouchable. And that made her the most valuable—and most dangerous—wolf alive.
She didn’t realize it yet.
But she would.
Because Liam would make sure of it. Even if it resulted in her hating him for it.
