31. Prolouge

Phoenix knelt down scrubbing the kitchen floor with bleach water to wash away her own blood.  She had burnt the bread sticks that were meant for dinner so the whole house beat her.  She could feel the cracked ribs slowly breaking together just like her freshly broken nose.  She knew she would have to rebreak it in order for it to heal right.

Once finished with the floor she still had to finish the alphas laundry and do the dishes.  It was already almost midnight. She knew if she was to finish, it would only be in time to take a quick nap and start breakfast. She descended the stairs to the basement/sleeping quarters for the house slave. Although she was permitted to sleep in the basement she only had a small rug for a bed and a tattered sheet to cover with. Her belongings stayed outside in the barn with the horses and she was only aloud to shower in the barn. She began the washer and went back up to do the dishes. Her chore list seemed never ending on some days. She knew one of the kings would visit soon and everything had to be perfect until they arrived some time in the next few months, so everyday she had a new list full of chore to keep her busy until midnight if done right.

Two thousand miles away lucien rubbed his brow in frustration. He had this sinking feeling someone was waiting for him and he was forgetting. Seconds later his thoughts were broken by his sister, Sage, coming in with a crimson envelope. He groaned knowing it was the next inspection from the elders. Their father, Xavier Blackstone, is the former alpha of the pack, now an elder. He brought back the royal line for wolves and now it is their turn to make sure packs are running smoothly and fairly.

"This just arrived from the elders. I think I know what it is." Sage said in a singsong voice. Lucien growled and held out his hand.

"It's my turn to take the inspection so I guess I'll take it." He groaned as she handed him the envelope and danced out of the room. Ripping open the seal of the elders he read the pack that was chosen for this inspection and instantly regretted taking it.  He looked over at his twin and smiled. "Rock, paper, scissors?"

"Not a chance. It's your turn remember?" Lucas reminded him with a shake of his head. "Let me guess though. Golden sun pack?"

Lucien simply nodded and laid his head on the desk. The golden sun pack did everything they could to hide their illicit activities if they knew the inspection was coming. Due to this the elders began drawing pack names at random. The boys had a mere six months to find their mate before the elders chose a wife for them. Because of this, they had begun to hunt harder and faster to find her. They refused to marry some random girl when the other piece to their soul was out there.

"You know the drill. Pack a bag before word gets out. You may wanna drive though. They have people working the airports nearby." Luccas stated before resuming his paperwork. Standing with a huff, Lucien went to their shared room and packed a few pairs of clothes and tossed the bag into one of their cars outside.

"Oh Luce, lunch is almost ready." Aunt Isabelle called from the kitchen.

"Can't. Inspections call." He replied starting back towards the office.

"Thats fine. I'll make you a to-go box for the road." She called after him and he waved his hand in reply before stepping back into the office. He gathered a few papers for the inspection before grabbing his wallet and keys.

"Don't forget to keep an eye out. A nose too." Lucas said never looking up.

"If she's there, I'll bring her home brother." He answered knowing immediately his twin was talking about their mate. Both men were desperate to be whole. Lucien went past the kitchen, grabbing his food, and got in his car, setting off to the golden sun pack. The whole drive would take about three days at the speed limit. One day there, one day back, and a day for the inspection.
