48- Into the Unknown
As the swirling colors of the portal receded, I felt a rush of cool night air wash over us. One moment we were in the glade, surrounded by the vibrant magic of No Man’s Land, and the next, we stood on the edge of the familiar—the cold, gray reality of the human realm.
Brenda's grip tightened on my hand as we took in our new surroundings. The glow of the portal faded behind us, replaced by the ambient light of street lamps flickering in the distance. The contrast felt stark – the lushness of our previous home gave way to crumbling pavement and distant car horns.
“We made it,” I breathed, a sense of disbelief mingling with relief.
“Not yet,” Brenda replied, scanning the area with caution. Her fairy senses were still on high alert. “We need to find a safe place to regroup.”
I nodded, taking in the quiet suburban street that felt eerily empty at this hour. It was a welcomed normality after the grandeur of No Man's Land, yet it felt barren without the nightly festivities. We slipped into the shadows, moving swiftly between houses, adrenaline surging through our veins.
“Where do we go now?” I asked, glancing around for any familiar landmarks. My heart ached for the beauty of our previous life, but more importantly, it ached for the safety of Brenda and our future child.
“Let’s head to my old apartment. It’s not too far from here,” Brenda suggested, leading us forward down a narrow alleyway.
As we walked, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the Cobra Goddess’s presence still lingered in the air, an ominous reminder of her threat, her darkness seeming to weave its way into our very thoughts. “Do you think she’ll follow us here?” I asked quietly.
Brenda paused, glancing over her shoulder. “She might. But she operates within her realm. It’s more difficult for her to exert power here. Still, we need to be careful. She’ll be searching for us, especially now that she knows we are connected.”
“I’m not ready to face her again. Not like that,” I muttered, the shiver of fear tracing my spine.
Brenda turned to face me, her eyes fierce and steady. “We will have to face her, sooner or later. But right now, our priority is to protect you and our child. We can plan, regroup, and find allies. There are beings in this world who will understand our plight.”
The mention of our child sent a wave of warmth through me, the thought of creating a new life serving as an anchor amidst the chaos. “How do we tell them?” I wondered aloud. “What if they—”
“They will be loved regardless of what challenges come,” Brenda stated firmly, the conviction in her voice shining through any unease. “It’s a difficult battle, but love is a source of power that can withstand even the Cobra Goddess and her dark heart.”
We reached Brenda’s old apartment building, its familiar faded façade offering a sense of nostalgia. She shuffled through her bag and produced a set of keys that jingled softly in the cool air. The door creaked open, revealing a modest living space filled with remnants of her previous life—littered reminders of unfulfilled dreams and cherished memories.
“Make yourself at home,” she said, motioning for me to step inside.
As I crossed the threshold, a sense of warmth enveloped me, calming the vague unease still swirling in my gut. I couldn’t help but marvel at the quaint mix of homey trinkets and youthful paintings adorning the walls.
“Do you have anything here that can help us?” I asked, examining the shelves filled with books, baubles, and intimate memories of her former life.
Brenda nodded, walking to a small cupboard near the kitchen. She opened it to reveal an assortment of items: sage, crystals, and other magical artifacts from her time as a fairy in training. “I might have something that can help cloak us from her gaze,” she said, pulling out a wiry charm that crackled faintly with energy. “This is a ward—it will lessen her ability to track us for a while.”
I watched in awe as she brought the charm to life, the air around it shimmering and warping slightly before growing steady. “You’re incredible,” I whispered, the colors of her spirit radiating even in this dimly lit space.
“Just—” she began, her voice faltering for a moment as if searching for the right words, “—just don’t forget that I’m still learning too. No matter what happens next, we have to be united.”
I nodded, taking in the power of her words. Just then, the doorbell rang, startling us both. “Who could it be?” I whispered.
Brenda’s expression hardened. “There’s only one way to find out.”
My heart raced as I nodded in agreement. With a wave of her hand, she waved a light charm into the air. “Let’s see who stands on our doorstep. We must be careful.”
As she approached the door, I stood a few steps back, muscles coiled like a spring, ready for anything.
With a cautious breath, she opened the door to reveal a figure cloaked in shadows. My heart pounded harder as I prepared for confrontation, but as the figure stepped into the light, my eyes widened in recognition.
It was Elyra—the pixie with a mischievous smirk we had met during our time in No Man’s Land. She looked weary but determined, her wings slightly dulled, glistening under the dim light.
“I followed you through the portal,” she said, her voice a blend of urgency and relief. “It was the only way to make sure you aren’t alone, especially after hearing the Cobra Goddess’s proclamation.”
Brenda’s face broke into a smile, a flicker of hope igniting within the room. “You came to help us?”
“Of course, darling!” Elyra exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Besides, you two are a bit of a legacy—can’t let the Cobra Goddess think she can just snatch that away. I have my own bits of magic to share—if you’re in! But we wouldn’t be standing here if darkness didn’t surround you both, so we have a lot of work to do.”
“We’re in,” I stated, feeling the warmth of newfound camaraderie pulsing through my veins. Together, we would reclaim what was stolen, work toward forging our
