CHAPTER 74
The week that followed the healing of my injury was pretty basic and at the same time, tedious. The doctor kept visiting the house daily to check on my wounds and change the dressings. Suzy continued to come over to keep me company and Connor was by my side through it all. Jojo too. Even though she appeared quite a distance when she was with me and wouldn't even bother to talk about other things. I had let her be, knowing fully well how she was bound to react if I forced her into talking to me.
In the next week of my recovery, I was able to do pretty much a few things by myself and the wounds didn't hurt as they did before. When Suzy came to see me again, I asked her about Miranda. Somehow, I was beginning to miss her and the times we spent being our vulnerable selves on phone calls. I missed that woman who was always there for me when no one else was.
"She's okay," Suzy replied to me, checking the dressing around my wounds. "She was going to come over but decided you were not in the right state to meet her because of your present condition. She doesn't want to cause stress for you."
I sighed and nodded. "Can we go over to the house? I would like to check on her for a minute."
Suzy looked at me with a slight frown on her face and I could tell she was probably thinking this was not a good idea.
I gave her a reassuring smile. "Trust me."
...................
When Suzy and I got to the house, the entire house was quiet and I guessed that Miranda was away. I wondered where she could go to. She used to tell me she didn't keep friends and enjoyed her solitude. So, I never imagined her going out to visit friends or attend events. Not like she shouldn't but I simply didn't think she was the type based on her own words and the basic simplest things I have noticed about her.
"Let's check up her room. Sometimes, she is always cuddled with her book in her room, smoking and listening to soft jazz" Suzy said with a friendly chuckle and led me upstairs and I threaded on cautiously.
So, Miranda smokes too.
I guess there were many things I didn't know about her like I once thought I did.
When we reached the door of her room, Suzy knocked on the door.
"Mom."
There was silence and no response from the inside.
"Mom," Suzy called again.
"Maybe she went out." I chipped in, feeling uncomfortable with the whole idea of coming over to see Miranda.
Why did I even suggest this in the first place?
Suzy shook her head at me. "No. She's inside." She sounded pretty confident and her face was now creased with worry.
She turned to look at me briefly. "Could you...step away a bit. Like, two steps back?"
I frowned but obeyed and I took a few steps backwards. Once there was a considerable amount of distance between the both of us, Suzy gave me a closed-mouth smile in gratitude mixed with an apology and took two steps back too and rushes for the door again, knocking it open with her leg in one swift kick.
I gasped in an awed gasp as she did so. I couldn't believe she was this tough and strong. Little wonder she worked in the crimes department.
Suzy stepped inside and I followed carefully. As we walked into the room, my feet stopped abruptly and a hand flew to my mouth in horror. Fear rushed through my vein at the sight of Miranda lying on the bare ground unconscious, with several empty bottles of alcohol around her.
"Mom!" Suzy cried in alarm and rushed to her, getting on her knees to examine Miranda, her own body vibrating with fear. I remained unmoving in my position, chilled by fear and shock, to be able to do or say anything. The scene was frightful and I was afraid to think if she is dead already.
"Mom!" Suzy shook Miranda vigorously and this time, I couldn't take it any longer and I rushed to join her. The strong smell of alcohol filled my nose and her face looked pale and lost of colour. I reached to check on her neck and wrist and my body sighed in relief that she was still alive.
She had overdosed on alcohol.
"She isn't dead," I told Suzy who had a face that was bathed in tears already. She looked a bit relieved at my words and turned back to Miranda. She tried to raise her.
"Quick. Help me. Let's take her to the hospital."
