Thirty-Nine
Daniel Addas
I help Clara into the car, being careful to keep my hands only at the small of her back. The only place she claims doesn't hurt.
When she is settled in, I get in beside her and nod once to uncle Ali.
I smile at Clara, she doesn't return it.
"Er... I'm really glad you're okay," I say to her. "I was so worried."
"Hmm," she says warily.
"I'm sorry you got hurt."
"Sorry?" She frowns.
"Yes, I should've brought you here sooner." I wave my hand towards the hospital.
"Why didn't you?" She watches my face, her own face expressionless.
I turn my gaze away from her. The car heads towards home.
"I don't know."
Her eyes narrow. "Be honest or don't bother."
"I'm sorry," I say quickly.
"Did you try to kill me?"
I can't meet her eyes.
"Look, Daniel, I understand that you aren't okay, alright?" It's not a question though. "But I need you to be honest. Did you kill Papa? Do you know what happened to Mama? And where the hell did you buy thallium from?"
I stared at her confused.
"Daniel...?" She probes.
I bury my face in my hands and shake my head, ashamed.
