Chapter 3
Melanie’s POV
We arrived quickly at Black Night territory, and I stopped before the border. Still hesitant, the sounds of wolves and people fighting made me rush forward. Staying at the back, I watched as Daemon’s pack ran ahead to help. I took the high ground and searched for Lilac, ‘Hurry, Melanie, Justin might sense us soon.’ Nodding, I quickly scanned the area, and when I found her, I almost lost all sanity. She was surrounded by four rouges, each growling and scratching at the ground as if taunting her to make a move. I looked around to see if she had help, but she was alone, and no one noticed her being alone. ‘Dammit, Maddy, I have to go down there. I cannot let her die.’ I tried to go down, but Maddy held me back. ‘Melanie, we said we would watch, not interfere. I’m sorry, but I cannot let you go down there.’ I kept fighting against Maddy, but she wasn’t budging. I looked back to Lilac, and just as a rouge jumped towards her exposed throat, I shifted and screamed.
That was the fastest I have ever shifted before. Once I finished screaming, the ground started shaking and trees ripping up. The roots quickly made their way around the rouges surrounding Lilac and tore them apart. My scream echoed over the valley, and when it finally stopped, I looked over to the rest of the field and saw that all the rouges that were attacking now dangled above everyone torn apart. ‘D-did I do that, Maddy?’ I got no response. ‘Maddy?’ Starting to panic, I backed up and headed to the edge of the border, trying to find Alpha Daemon’s pack. ‘Maddy, please respond to me.’ Someone touched my shoulder, and I whipped around, gripping the hand and ripping it off me.
“Woah, calm down there, spicy.” Nicholas’s voice filled my ears, and I soothed my freight. “Sorry, a little one edge after what just happened.” Nicholas nodded his head and sighed. “Yea, that was pretty amazing. I’ve heard rumors of wolves having abilities. But I’ve never seen it in person. Whoever that white-haired girl was, she was amazing.” Confused, I asked what he meant. I don’t have white hair. It’s dark brown. “Well, as we were fighting, we all heard a scream, then suddenly, the trees started fighting against the rouges. Out of nowhere, the roots had come up from the ground and wrapped around the ones still fighting, and well… you can see what happened.” He pointed to the field where the demolished rouges sat. “How do you know she had white hair?” Nicholas chuckled, “We all saw her on top of the cliff. She stood there looking stunning, and she was so powerful.” Smiling, he scratched his head, “Alpha Justin is trying to find her now to thank her or something like that.” Once again, I felt panic arise inside me. Nodding, I headed towards the border and stepped across. I do not need to see Justin now, and I’m still confused about my hair changing.
‘That’s because you are spiritually bonded to the White Wolf.’ ‘Maddy! Where have you been?’ Sighing, she walked around before settling down. ‘It takes a lot out of me when my powers are used, and I am a little out of practice, so I must rest for now.’ Shaking my head, I pressed for more, ‘What do you mean your powers? Why is this the first time I’m hearing about this?’ Cackling, Maddy raised her head, ‘Dear, there is a lot I haven’t told you.’ Resting her head, she continued, ‘My last Spirit Bond had abused my powers and eventually led to their downfall. So I was scared to tell you, as to not to be hurt once more. I apologize for keeping this a secret, but you must understand my feelings.’ Lowering my head, I closed my eyes, inserting myself beside her. ‘I understand that feeling, Maddy, but you know you can trust me with anything. However, I have some questions, if you don’t mind.’ Maddy lifted her head and nodded. Sitting beside her, she rested her head on my lap. ‘Why did Nicholas say I had white hair? Why did the roots and trees get affected but nothing else? Do you have any other abilities or just that? Do they activate when I sense danger or just when I scream?’ Taking a deep breath, I was about to continue when Maddy spoke. ‘Calm down, my dear. Let me answer before you continue with more.’ Sheepishly I nodded and waited. ‘You forced me to shift, and at that moment, you were overwhelmed with an emotion that drew my powers out. Your hair changed to my fur color as you used my abilities. For the most part, your features shouldn’t change in wolf form, but I did not know you could use my powers in human form. What’s new for me.’
As she moved on, I began to stroke her head, ‘My abilities use nature as a weapon. This time it was the roots and trees surrounding the field. I have other powers, but that will come in time.’ Sighing, she stood up and walked around, ‘And as I said before, when you screamed, you were overwhelmed with the emotion to protect your friend, so it pushed forward my powers. I will train you to use them on command, but for now, try not to let any emotions take control.’ Finishing, she looked towards me and gave me a toothy wolf grin. ‘I will help you train, but not right now. First, we need to heal ourselves from that godforsaken mate.’ Nodding, I got up and waved bye as I returned control. Blinking rapidly, I looked around and noticed most of Daemon’s pack was now here, and we were getting ready to set off. “You wanna race back?” Glancing at Nicholas, I smirked, “IF you lose, you have to cook dinner.” Grinning, he nodded, “And if I win, you have to……… Sing for the pack.” Agreeing, I shifted into my wolf and got ready. As soon as Alpha Daemon gave the word, I shot off like a dart through the forest.
“YES! I win!” Gasping for air, I lay on the grass in front of Daemon’s pack house. Nicholas flopped beside me, looking in my direction in disbelief. “How the hell did you manage to beat me?! I am the fastest warrior, and you still beat me.” Laughing I pushed myself up onto my palms. “It’s not all about being fast. If were had a straight shot here, you probably would have beaten me, but we had obstacles and turns. I was just smarter and took the quick and easy path.” Nicholas huffed and crossed his arms not satisfied with my answer. Alpha Daemon approached us with a big grin. “Well, as I heard before, Nicholas, you have to cook dinner for us now. So I suggest you meet your mother in the kitchen and get started.”
Grumbling, Nicholas pulled himself up and walked into the house. “Stupid trees, getting in my way.” Chuckling, I lifted myself and faced Daemon. “I believe I have made my decision Alpha Daemon.” Looking down, I began apologizing, “I’m sor-.” A hand cut me off, and I raised my head to look at him. “Don’t apologize, and I knew your answer as soon as you finished talking with your wolf.” My eyes widened in confusion. How did he know I was talking with Maddy? ‘He is an Alpha you know that, right?’ I focused on Daemon, shaking my head, “Why didn’t you say anything?” Turning around, Daemon looked over his pack. Some people were play fighting, others chasing each other around. “They needed some time to relax after the fight, and while you and Nicholas were chasing each other, the others were trying to catch up and turned it into a game. I didn’t want to spoil the fun.” Nodding, I stretched out my hand, “Thank you, Alpha Daemon, for letting me stay here and helping my old pack. I appreciate everything and will not forget what you have done for me.” Daemon shook my hand before guiding me into the house and the dining room. Slowly the others followed and piled into the dining room, waiting for food to be served.
After dinner, I headed up the stairs and into the room I was staying in. Once I reached the door, I stopped for a moment. ‘You know, Maddy, this wouldn’t be a bad place to settle.’ ‘I know, sweetheart, but sadly we are just too close to Justin for me to focus on training you. I can still feel the pull of the bond slightly.’ Nodding, I walked into my room, stopping immediately when I saw Nicholas sitting on my bed. “What’s with you and Alpha Daemon sitting on my bed and scaring the hell out of me.” Nicholas’s head whipped up, and sadness covered his face. ‘Looks like he knows now.’ Rolling my eyes, I walked over to him and sat beside him. “I take it you know I’m leaving?” Hanging his head, Nicholas nodded, “Alpha Daemon told me. Why can’t you stay here? Did we not treat you well enough?” Grabbing his face, I forced him to look up at me, “Nicholas, it was nothing you guys did, you all treated me with respect, and I appreciate everything. I cannot move on from my past being this close to my old pack. I have to continue moving.”
Pouting his lower lip, Nicholas shrugged, “Fine, but I want you to stay in contact with us. Here are my and Alpha Daemon’s phone numbers and my email. This is my email if I don’t respond to the text.” Taking the paper from him, I wrapped my arms around him, embracing Nicholas in a big hug. “Goodbye, Nicholas Gillion. It was a pleasure meeting you.” Tears escaped my eyes and slowly dripped down my face. Nicholas’s arms snaked around me and squeezed me tightly, “Goodbye, Melanie Harrison. I hope to meet you again in this lifetime.”
I stepped out of Alpha Daemons territory this morning around five am. Sad to go, but I needed to continue moving. About three hours into running, I took a small break by a stream. I caught a fish, cooked it, and ate it. Then I cooled off in the water before getting up and continuing.
About four more hours passed, and I finally collapsed on the ground. Relaxing against a tree, I closed my eyes and waited, I knew I had to be in someone’s territory, so it was a matter until someone came to me. Shifting back into human form, I threw on a lovely summer dress Mary had given me.
Four minutes and thirty-seven seconds on the dot, I heard a bush rustling. “Hello there. You can come out of the bush.” Grunting, I opened my eyes and looked directly at the bush, making the noise. Out walked another tall, handsome man like Nicholas. He had colossal-sized muscles, but this time he radiated power. “I assume you are the Alpha of this territory?” Smirking, the Alpha nodded, “And I take it you are Ms. Melanie Harrison? Alpha Daemon said you might be through here or stop here.” Damn, I didn’t think Daemon would reach out to anyone. Not this far, but I suppose he would have many friends in the area. I guess I owe him for this.
“Yes, Alpha….” “Newster. Alpha Hudson Newster of the Shadow Dark Fire Pack.” Wide-eyed, I blinked rapidly. There are some rumors about this pack too, but I can’t judge a book by its cover. ‘Yes, dear, we did that with Alpha Daemon and looked at how they turned out.’ Smiling, I reached out my hand for Hudson to shake. “Well, in that case, Alpha Hudson, it is nice to meet you.”
“As you know, my name is Melanie Harrison.” Returning the smile, Hudson grabbed my hand and shook it. “So I am going to cut straight to the chase. I am offering you the same deal that Alpha Carter offered you. You are welcome to stay here and join my pack, or you can continue.” Shifting feet, I took a big breath and let out a giant sigh, ‘What do you think, Maddy? Is this far enough from Justin to train, or do we need to keep moving?’ Moving around, Maddy started controlling her breathing.
‘This is good. I can no longer feel the pull of the bond. Alpha Hudson seems nice, and I wonder how the rest of the pack is.’ Nodding, I looked back to Hudson, ‘If it’s alright with you, Alpha, I’d like to meet some pack members before I make a decision.” Hudson smiled and nodded, offering his arm for me to loop mine through. Giggling, I obliged, and he made his way to a giant house. “This is the main pack house; we have another smaller one a little further in the woods, hidden from sight as a shelter during fights.” We stopped and he pointed to the second level, “That’s where most trained warriors stay, the floor above them is the helpers, and then one above that is where I stay, my beta and my gamma all stay.” Nodding, he pulled me inside, showing me the kitchen and entertainment room. “In here is the Gym and training room. There is also a platform outside for sparring and weapons training.” Hudson showed me a window, and I could see the outdoor platform through it. ‘We shall train there for the most part while getting used to my powers.’ ‘Okay, Maddy, should we tell Alpha Hudson about that or wait?’ Sighing, she looked down, ‘We should mention it before we become a part of this pack in case they do not want us to join.’ Agreeing, I yanked on Hudson’s arm, “I have to show you something before I make my decision.”
His eyebrows scrunched together, and he slowly nodded, pulling us outside. I let go of his arm and stood near the woods. ‘Okay, Maddy, how do I do this?’ Standing up she settled in between control once more. This time I felt the shift in my body, I felt slightly more powerful and confident. ‘You need to remember when Lilac was almost killed again. Hold on to that fear of losing someone close to you.’ The memories started popping back into my head, and I felt scared, angry, and helpless. ‘As soon as you hold on to those emotions, let it out. Remember what it felt like when you snapped. Focus it on a single target.’ Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath. Once I gathered all the emotions into a single area, I snapped my eyes open and let it out. My scream echoed throughout the trees, and I watched as they started to shake and roots started ripping up from the ground. They all lunged forward towards the training dummy on the platform, throwing it to the sky. The roots shot after it and ripped it to pieces.
Turning around, I felt my body shift back to normal as I faced Hudson, fear of being rejected settling in my nerves. Searching his face for any emotion, I sputtered, “I am sorry I should have told you right away when you offered me the options. I will leave, and you don’t have to worry about me.” Shifting away from him, I went to lunge into wolf form when an arm grasped my forearm. “Do not take my silence as negative. I didn’t know what to say because you are the White Wolf from the history books.” My ears perked up when he spoke, “The history books? What do you mean?” Hudson’s eyes widen in disbelief, “Were you not told who you were? Did your Alpha not tell you? Did your Wolf not tell you?” Maddy whimpered and sat down, “My wolf did not show me anything as she feared being used for her powers as her previous Spirit Bond had. If the White Wolf is in the history books, you should know how they misused her abilities.” Maddy thanked me before curling up, “As for my Alpha, no one gave me any attention to see what color my wolf was.” Hudson nodded and walked over to the training dummy, now in pieces. “So you know no information on your Spirit Bonds powers, do you?” Shaking my head, I moved beside Hudson and looked at his face. “Well, it’s a good thing that we have the most history records here at Shadow Dark Fire. I can help you a small amount learn about what happened in the past, and your Spirit Bond can help with the training. What’d ya say?” Hudson reached out his hand as he finished his sentence, ‘I like it here Melanie. He seems very nice.’ Giggling, I took his hand, “Alpha Hudson, it seems like you have a new pack member.” Hudson cheered and threw a fist into the air. “Woooohoooo!”
