Chapter Thirteen

“I don’t understand. You just told me this morning that his white blood cells were basically nonexistent. That any day could be his last. You said that the cancer had spread over eighty percent of his body. My husband, his siblings, my entire family is heading here from two states over to say their last goodbyes. And now you’re telling me that the cancer is just…gone?”
“I know how this sounds Mrs. Michels. You don’t know how much this is confusing me and the rest of my colleagues. We tripled ran all the tests and scans, we even repeated tests on other patients just in case. The cancer is gone. His vitals are going back to normal; his health is rapidly increasing. We don’t know how to explain what’s happening to him. But we need to keep him for further observations.”
With that he turns away from her and smiles down at Kevin, who was sitting up in bed looking more vibrant, more energized, more happy than he ever has before. Not only that, this morning he had been as bald as could be, but now a new growth of hair was already growing back at such speed that it caused the doctor to be astounded.
“How are we feeling Kevin?” He asks him.
The young boy looks up at him and smiles hugely. “I feel great!”
Ry sat there completely confused. He didn’t mean to fall asleep and slept he did. For two hours. When he came to, Mrs. Michels was sitting on the other side reading a book while Kevin was still asleep himself. Nasia was nowhere to be found. When he asked about her the boy’s mother informed him that she hadn’t seen her since before she left the room to visit the chapel and it was the male nurse who told him that Nasia had left and hasn’t returned since.
He wasn’t sure why she had gone, especially without saying anything. But then again she was an alien from outer space he guessed, and she admitted about having no emotions of her own. So why would she even say anything? A part of him can’t deny that he was kind of relieved to see her not present with them. She was still his stalker, alien or not. But now as the minutes pass something strange was happening that shouldn’t be at all.
It started when Mrs. Michels noticed something different about his vitals. His blood pressure had been low for the longest time, only to show it was steadily going back to normal. His heart rate used to beat a little too fast but was beating normally. Thinking that maybe it was a fluke she had called the nurse only for them to be confused so they called in his doctor. He ran tests which all came back normal. It took them hours as they ran even more blood tests and even sent him for scans. Ry stayed through it all, calling his parents to let them know what was going on.
Now here they all were listening to the doctor tell them that Kevin was healing, not just healing but was as healthy as can be, cancer free. And the fact that his skin glowed, his veins less visible, his color returning, his eyes more brighter than ever and his hair…it was suddenly just growing back. He looked less hollow, less tired, less sick.
While the other adults were talking, Kevin leaned into Ry and whispers, “I had the dream again. But this time there was something different that happened.”
“What was it?” He whispers back.
“I always wake up before I reach out my hand, but this time I did. Once I put my hand in theirs I felt this reassurance and safety I’ve never felt before. I felt, whole. And this time they spoke to me.” His tone was one of dramatics, but his eyes were bright with hope.
“They said to me, Protect this life to its very end. Then I woke up and now all of this is happening. I’m not in pain anymore and my body feels full of energy.”
He couldn’t help but just stare at him, not knowing what to say. But one thing stuck out to him that gave him an unsettling idea what was going on here. Leaning even further in he couldn’t help asking, “What do you think the light was Kev?”
He smiles big again. “I know you don’t really believe in God and all, but I think they’re my guardian angel. An angel healed me. There’s no other explanation right?”
An angel that suddenly appeared to heal him the exact same day that he brought Nasia here at the hospital. She teleported them here, what’s to say she couldn’t get rid of his disease? What had she told him when he asked about her true form? That it will disintegrate him if shown? What could possibly be so strong for something like that to happen?
Energy. Immense bright Light.
He stands up slowly, letting go of the boy’s hand. Kevin frowns at him, but he gives a reassuring smile. “They’re going to monitor you for a little while. I need to go back home for a bit, but I promise I’ll be back.”
“Oh, okay. Then I’ll see you later?” He asks hopefully.
“Absolutely, buddy.”
Ry needed to get out of there. He needed to find Nasia because he needed to know the truth of what was going on. Needed her to explain to him why she did what she did. He was grateful for sure because at the rate he was healing he was just going to be another normal kid that gets to grow up and live out his life like how it should have been.
Saying his goodbyes he quickly leaves the hospital to see how late it got as night had already fallen. He wasn’t sure how he was going to find her since all he knew was that she was staying in the redwoods. But that was three hours away and such a large mass of distance she could be anywhere in that forest.
Taking the bus home he tried to figure out just how he was going to find her. He could possibly ask his dad to borrow his car and drive all the way to the forest, but it was late, so it was highly dangerous to head up in the mountains all by himself. He couldn’t ask his parents to tag along, and he definitely couldn’t tell them why he was heading out there in the first place.
Stepping off after fifteen minutes riding, since the bus hardly made any stops on the way, he looks around to see no one else about. The streetlamps were lit and the soft glow of lights from houses gave enough light to see where he was going. The night was a bit chilly, and he hadn’t worn a jacket since he hadn’t plan to stay at the hospital for that long. Guess he had been a lot more tired than he thought he was. As he walked he couldn’t help overthinking about everything.
About the day they met, her behavior towards him, her blank stares and slight monotone voice that seemed to become less and less bored sounding the more time they talked to one another. Of all the things she said that at first made her sound completely insane to the not understanding basic human emotions and feelings. The more he thought, the more he was seeing how much her reactions made sense with her claiming to be a celestial being.
But the one thing that stuck out the most to him was how was she able to find him without knowing where he had lived. He distinctively remembered that she never bothered to answer his question on that. She could find him, but he couldn’t find her. That sucked ass big time. The one time he actually needed her to be here she wasn’t.
Turning down his street he decided that he’ll sleep on it tonight and hope that she’ll pop out of nowhere like she does so he could question her on what was happening to Kevin. But as soon as he goes to turn on the side of his mother’s car up the driveway someone steps right in front of him nearly making his heart jump right out of his chest in pure fright.
