Chapter 39: The Alpha's Special Protection
[Dove]
Grasping my hand, he walked silently back to the village.
I followed him quietly all the way back to the mansion, across the corridor and into his room.
Once the door closed, Cole turned to me and folded his arms. “Talk. Explain.”
I started from the idea that I had, to my journey back to my old home, my conversation with my father and then the chase.
“Abe is involved, Cole.” I was fighting a nagging worry in my mind, knowing that I would only be able to attend to it after giving Cole what he needed.
Cole cast his arm at the door behind him and blasted, “He sent those hyenas after you! Why should I listen to him?”
I grabbed his arms. “He didn’t send them after me. He alerted them to show me what they can do. He was helping me, Cole.”
Cole scoffed and gave me a wry smile. “Doesn’t he know that what they’re using would kill you?”
“He doesn’t know what they have,” I muttered sadly at the ground. I told Cole about my father’s demotion and, judging from his lack of information, he had not returned to his previous post. “They’re using him to train the warriors and keeping him out of everything else.”
Cole heaved a sigh and looked away.
I waited for another moment to pass and addressed my worry. Did I weaken him? Visions of him on the ground, life seeping out of him, flashed across my mind, chilling my fingers.
“Are you alright? Did the silver hurt you?”
In a blink of an eye, I was on the thick sheets, staring into his deep-blue angry eyes. Without a warning, his rugged lips were on mine, kissing me roughly with a new wildness and urgency.
After numbing my senses with his tongue, his mouth dragged across my jaw, down to my neck and then over my shoulder, nibbling and sucking, as his hands hiked up my blouse. My breathing became short and shallow.
In one fierce move, he tore the blouse over my head and pulled my jeans off.
His mouth immediately teased my soft pink beads with his fingers, tongue and lips. I surrendered my high-pitched moans, which then fell into a series of whimpers and sighs as his hands massaged the plumpness of my breasts. Driven wild with the raging sensations, I grabbed his hair, pushing his lips harder onto my scalding skin.
A familiar streak of coldness raced up my spine and spread across my back. My belly felt warm and fuzzy. I realized that his hand was over my lower lips, caressing, kneading and rubbing them fervently, until they trembled with need. Abruptly, my body shuddered and I felt tingles all over.
His hand slid under my sweaty thighs and pushed them forward as he entered me swiftly. Without waiting for me to get used to his size, he pulled and thrusted deeper, sending quivers through my limbs and an intense tightness below my navel. I cried out in response to the new wave of emotions, clinging onto him.
With each small pull, he plunged into me deeper and harder. Hotness stung my eyes and then washed down my cheeks. I was gasping uncontrollably. Lifting me slightly off the sheets, he drove into my deepest point, hitting that sweet spot. The pleasure swimming inside me intensified and I tightened further, teasing more grunting and growling from his throat.
Capturing my lips for another hard kiss, he gave one final thrust and released everything into my shaking body.
As I returned from the glaring white light, he caressed my damped brows, pressed his lips on my wet cheeks and then kissed me gently again.

[Claire]
The Alpha came to ask for her daughter again.
He said she should be at Connie’s house and the old werewoman had seen her doing some stunts in her backyard, but then she was gone.
The look in his eye suggested bad news.
Claire panicked. She remembered seeing her baby girl strolling out of the house hours ago. Where could she have gone to? She couldn’t have been taken - the home ground was heavily guarded and impenetrable. This time, she hadn’t a clue.
The Alpha thought for a moment, then cursed under his breath and bolted out of the mansion.
Worried, Claire followed him.
She was glad that she did.
But Abe now knows where she has been hiding. He will come for her.

[Cole]
“I’m not hurt,” he groaned in exasperation. “Stop asking.”
She sat up, faced him, nestled his cheeks in her hands and gazed into his eyes. “That’s strange. You’re not affected by the silver at all?”
Cole chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief, then pulled her back onto him and hugged her like a bolster. “Why wouldn’t I be affected by it?”
Her breath tickled his throat as she continued voicing her doubts. “But you aren’t.”
“I was light-headed for a moment. Then, my healing kicked in.”
“But, the silver would’ve slowed it down. It did so to Owin and me. I think there was more silver in that bottle than in the candle, Cole. Owin’s healing slowed down very badly.”
Cole exhaled heavily. “Maybe there was very little silver in the one that hit me.” He knew it was nonsense the second it spilled from his lips.
Her face lifted and he saw her wrinkled forehead. “You know that it’s the same one they used on Owin.”
He inhaled sharply and nudged her head down again, resting her cheek on his shoulder. “Go to sleep.”
“But…”
“Go to sleep or we go another round, your choice.” Cole glided a hand down her velvety back and grinned when she shivered under his touch.
If they do go for another round, Cole thought, he would be gentler. He was feeling guilty for being so rough with her earlier. He had been boiling with rage at the thought of almost losing her.
She nuzzled her face in the crook of her neck and cried, “Sleep!”
“Good.”
Cole kissed the top of her head, caressed her silver hair, exhaled lightly and closed his eyes.
An image of Dove racing for her life swarmed into his mind. He swallowed hard, the chilling sensation returned to his neck.
He saw her from afar, running towards him. Breathing again, he wanted to go over and give her good scolding when he noticed that she was distracted by something behind her.
Then he realized that she was being chased.
Not again, he cursed, and sped forward.
He heard the faint shrill of an arrow piercing through the air and saw something glittery shooting at Dove. She wasn’t aware of it. Charging at double speed, he leaped and bumped her out of the way, and then a large glass bottle smashed into him.
Cool liquid melted into his skin and he blacked out.
Then, something warm and soothing coursed through his veins, melted the blockages, freed his healing mechanism and restored his body to its top condition. He returned to consciousness almost immediately.
Cole stretched out his hand in the darkness, twisted and turned it around, studying it, thinking about what Dove had said. Owin had it pretty bad but he healed instantly.
His thoughts returned to that comforting feeling spreading through his body.
What the hell was it?
