Chapter 33: The Devil himself

I staggered back, wincing in pain as the old man tore the wolf off my shoulder and sliced him apart with the Urumi. My trembling hands grasped my shoulders tightly of their own accord. Yep! This time the blood was most definitely mine. Given my weird healing abilities I would only have to bear this excruciating pain for a few more moments before it gets healed fully, but it still hurt like a bitch.

Another wolf sneaked his way around the old man, who had gone completely into a rage and was now slicing through the wolves as if they were fresh meat in a butcher’s shop.

I immediately recoiled when the wolf started advancing threateningly ,then frowned. Even if I didn’t have any weapons I wasn’t completely helpless, am I? Then why the hell should hide behind the old man? I had hidden my powers away for so long thinking that the nature of my powers would cause people to hate and attack me. Now they are already attacking me even without knowing the full extent of my powers. So why the hell should I hide and pretend to be something I am not?

I straightened my shoulders and found that the wound had already healed. Great! The wolf would be expecting me to be easy game cause my shoulder was already dislocated and my clothes were soaked with blood. But he wouldn’t know that I was already healed and was waiting for him all ready.

I smirked at the wolf which apparently aggravated him cause he let out a wild, shrilling howl. I extended my arms and started moving them in circular motions as the familiar dark smoky fire erupted from my hands.

This time however I didn’t bother to tone it down, unleashing it to its fullest. The wolf howled in pain as my hellfire reached him and I saw his fur melting, then his skin. His eyeballs popped out of his sockets as the air filled with a pungent smell of his decaying body which was now turned into ashes.

I looked around and found that everyone’s eyes were fixated on me. The wolves backed out slowly, barring their teeth and soon disappeared while the old man froze like a statue, his right hand still wielding the Urumi as he stared at me surprised as well as pensively.

“Go on! Say that I am a monster” I spat at him as I dimmed the hellfire.

He appeared to be in deep thought as he rounded up the Urumi back into loops. His expression was solemn as he handed back the Urumi.

“Say something….anything….” I murmured softly, being scared out my mind that I scared him off.

“I thought I felt a water source inside you and I heard that you were training in the water sect so I had assumed that you had inherited your mother’s powers. You were right! You may look like your mother but everything about you reeks of your father.” He said softly.

I am not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a curse. My father was evil and I really didn’t like being associated with that man.

I narrowed my eyes as I asked him , “What’s your relation with my Father? You talk as if you were an insider.”

He fumbled with the sleeves of his robes nervously as he asked me, “What do you think of your father?”

“ What do I think of him? I think he is a selfish, manipulating, conniving, ruthless son of a bitch.”

He let out a stark breath and stumbled backward as if I had just slapped him, right on the cheek.

“And why are you so intent in helping me train with the Urumi? What’s in it for you?” I shot at him again before he could recover.

He shook himself out of the daze as he muttered, “ To help you slay that selfish, manipulating, conniving, ruthless son of a bitch of course. Isn’t that your intention?”

I blinked my eyes in surprise, taken aback.

“ Oh “ was the only thing that came out of my mouth.

……………………………

The old man and I soon became close acquaintances as he started training me.

“Faster” he yelled at me and I let out a groan.

We were at the end of the waterfalls, standing on rocks and I was swishing an enormous rope to and fro from the water. My shoulders hurt like hell as with every passing moment the rope felt heavier as it absorbed more and more water. And to top it all off, I was losing my balance every few seconds as I slipped from the moist rocks.

At his command I immediately fastened my pace, swishing the rope up and down into the water. I groaned as I felt my feet slip again and my head the hit the rocks hard.

The old man immediately jumped in and took me in his arms and carried me to the land, leaving the rope soaking in the water. He gently laid me down and brushed aside my hair to examine my wound, then frowned.

Oops! I had managed to hide my healing abilities even after the werewolf fight but looks like I am caught red handed.

“ You are all healed already” He exclaimed gleefully.

I didn’t really understand his gleeful tone so I got up, brushing the mud of my pants and shrugged innocently, “Don’t all guardians heal fast?”

“No they don’t and you know it” He said exasperated, then looked intently at me with a twinkle in his eyes.

“So he chose you….You are the chosen one….But why you? You are the least likely candidate….So the heavens had indeed made their final play….fascinating” he muttered more to himself than to me.

“Huh?” I tilted my head at him, perplexed as I raised my right eyebrow at him.

“Chosen one? What’s so fascinating?”

He locked his eyes into mine as he whispered, “It’s fascinating that the gods have chosen to bless the daughter of the devil”

“What blessing?” I asked dubiously as I felt a nervous twist in my stomach ,anticipating for his reply.

“Your healing ability, of course. You are an immortal. The gods have blessed very few valiant guardians before with immortality but never a child of the Devil. “ He said in an explanatory tone as if that was supposed to clear everything up but it ended up confusing me more. Immortal? Me? What the hell?

“ The heavens shall rise up again and usher in the golden era only when the son of God sits in the throne with the heir of the Devil by his side, ruling over the three armies of the heaven, hell and mankind” He recited in a pompous tone, much similar to that of Stephanno’s.

“ Is that a prophecy that you just recited?” I asked him excitedly as I felt my eyes widening.

He nodded and replied, “ The Devil’s daughter with the mark of the God….interesting. Guess, the old fool finally figured it all out.”

“Old fool? Did just call God, the old fool?” I scoffed indignantly at him, putting my hands on my waist and fixing him with a murderous glare.

He recoiled and held his hands up defensively. His eyes started scanning me intently and he raised an eyebrow as he took in the Dominic’s chain on my neck but didn’t comment anything.

“Am I really the heir of the devil?” I asked him, knowing full well the answer to the question. After all Daniel’s prophecy had mentioned me as the ‘Daughter of the Devil’.

He simply nodded and I felt a drooping sensation in my stomach. All this time I have been holding onto the tiny sliver of hope that they associated my father with the Devil because he was evil and was a worshiper of Satan. I didn’t reckon that my father WAS the Satan.

“So my father is the Devil?” I stuttered.

He bent his neck and stooped down, placing his hands on his legs as he fixed me with a scrutinizing glare, “Does that bother you?”

I scoffed and replied icily, “Of course it bothers me. No one wants to be known as the child of the Devil”

Something raw passed briefly in his eyes, then he blinked and straightened up , shaking his head disappointedly as he said, “ Even God can’t exist without the Devil. Both must exist simultaneously for balance and order.”

Then everything hit me at once……him being proud when he saw me holding the Urumi at the mansion…him following me and protecting me…..him, wielding the Urumi as if he had done it a thousand times……the one that gave it all away was the statement he made claiming that he didn’t belong to any sects….but if classification was indeed necessary the blood sect comes close to it.

I took several steps back, jolted awake by the revelation. Gosh! I was so stupid and dense. I held up an accusatory finger up at him, my whole body shaking as I murmured, “ You are the Devil, aren’t you?”

He scanned my eyes, obviously reading my mind. Of course the main play of the Devil was to wreak havoc by manipulating others and I suppose reading minds is indeed an occupational hazard for the Devil.

He grimaced , obviously taken aback by the venom in my thoughts and said vulnerably, “Yes, my child. I am your father....Took you long enough to figure it out”

I sunk into the ground, my knees failing me as despair hit me……All these people were right to fear me….After all I was a monster just like my father….
