A New Discovery
As I followed Lord Syndril through the dimly lit corridors of his ancient home, a sense of anticipation stirred within me. The library awaited us, its secrets as old as the Syndril lineage itself. Damon, with his enigmatic aura, seemed to glide rather than walk, and I couldn’t help but feel a mixture of awe and nervousness myself. This is the first time he has opened up to me and offered to show me anything other than how to drink blood.
“We’re here to uncover your potential, Caroline,” Damon said, his voice echoing softly in the vast chamber of books. “Every vampire has a unique gift, and it’s time we discovered yours.”
We walked into my new favorit room in the manor, the towering shelves, ornate woodwork, and the soft glow of the reading lamps create an atmosphere of refined elegance that calls to my soul. “This place is beautiful, how many books do you own?”
With a graceful wave of his hand, Damon summoned a book from the highest shelf, guiding it gently into my hands without touching it. “Telekinesis,” he explained with a smirk. “One of the many abilities I possess.” He said as he plucked the book from my hand, “I have been alive for a long time. Many of these I have gathered during my travels and others have been gifts.”
I traced the spine of a book on the shelf in front of me, feeling the weight of knowledge within. “And what other powers do you hold?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
Damon’s eyes gleamed with a hint of pride. “In time, I will share them all with you. But first, let’s focus on awakening the vampire within you, Caroline.”
“How will we know what I can do?” I asked a bit excited to find out. I never knew vampires had abilities like this.
“That will depend, sometimes they come on their own when we are in need. Others we have to learn and train to use them.” He snapped the book shut putting it back on the top shelf.
“Is that why I have been training?” I turned to look at him. I actually looked at him, I noticed the red in his eyes was a mix of reds. The light from the reading lamps gave his hair a soft glow.
He nodded, “that amongst other reasons.” He paused for a moment, “my father wishes to meet you. You should be safe as long as you are with me, but he has been known to act out from time to time.”
I sucked in a shallow breath, “should I be worried?” This is the first time he has spoken about his family.
“No, but I want to be prepared.” He finished. He walked over to a wall along the back it was adorned with portraits of people. Swords and shields hung as decorations, and in the center a long skinny wooden display case with different colored crystals. “Understanding what you can do will be the first step in that direction.”
I stood off to the side, “What do I need to do?”
He flipped up the lid to the case, “Please look at the crystals and pick the one that calls to you the most.”
I stepped a bit closer to get a better look, they all looked the same to me other than color. I wanted to touch all of them. “What if it’s not just one?”
I looked up at him to gaze at his reaction. “Touch all of them if you would like.” He said as he picked up the purple one and it glowed at his touch.
“Whoa! How does it do that?” This is amazing, I have never seen anything like it!
He placed it back in the box, “they channel the magic that resides in you. When it is a match, it will glow.”
I reached for the purple one, “What do the colors mean.” I picked it up, but it did not glow for me. I couldn’t help but feel a bit sad when it did nothing.
“The purple represents the mind, meaning telekinesis or something else related to it. They don't tell us everything just the right direction to start looking.” He explained to me.
I slowly picked up each of them and none of them glowed. I tried green which means earth, dark blue for water, light blue for air. I thought I would get something from the red one which stood for fire, but nothing happened. Through it all Damon stayed quiet watching my every move. I only had three left, I picked up the white one that represents the soul and it felt heavier in my hand but didn’t glow like his did. I took the pink one for the body, and it too didn’t give a single bit of light.
The only one left was the black one I was about to touch it when he placed his hand over mine. “Don’t stress to much if none of them glow for you Caroline, some vampires never get special abilities.” He paused making sure I was looking at him, “It doesn’t mean you aren't special in your own right. It just means you don’t have a magic ability.”
I touched it rocking it back and forth in my hand. It never once glowed, none of them did. I don’t know what the black one means but Damon left a sigh of relief go. “What is black for?” I asked him, I wonder why he was worried in the first place.
“Black stands for darkness,” He picked it up from my hand and it glowed a dim gray light. “You having a black ability would only make my father want you more.” He placed it in the case closing the lid softly.
“I thought I didn’t need to worry about your father,” I confronted him. “It glowed for you!”
“And now you don’t,” he said walking away from me. Leaveing me standing in the middle of the room completely at a loss for words.
Every time we take a step forward, I feel like we than take three steps back.
