The Hidden Path 1.3
The vision shattered, and Aiden collapsed to the floor, gasping for breath. The Watchers’ eyes dimmed, their glow fading as the energy in the chamber stabilized. The tubes began to close around them once more, sealing them back into their stasis.
Aiden lay on the cold floor, his body trembling as the weight of what he had seen settled over him. The Watchers had shown him the truth, but it was a truth more terrifying than anything he could have imagined.
He forced himself to stand, his legs shaking as he made his way towards the exit. The corridor stretched out before him, dark and foreboding, but he knew he had to keep moving. There was no turning back now.
As he stepped into the corridor, a faint sound reached his ears—a distant rumble, like the roar of a beast awakening from a long slumber. The ground beneath him trembled, and Aiden knew that whatever he had seen in his visions, it was real.
And it was coming for him.
Aiden’s pulse quickened as the rumbling grew louder, reverberating through the ancient walls of the labyrinthine structure. Every instinct screamed at him to run, but there was no clear direction, no escape. His mind raced, trying to piece together the fragments of the vision the Watchers had forced upon him.
The end is coming, and all will be consumed.
The words echoed in his mind, chilling him to the bone. What had he unleashed? And more importantly, could it be stopped?
A sudden jolt knocked Aiden off his feet, sending him sprawling to the ground. The walls of the corridor seemed to pulse with life, the once-stable structure now shifting and twisting as if reacting to the presence of whatever was awakening deep within.
He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding in his chest. The corridor ahead split into two paths, each one equally dark and foreboding. Aiden hesitated, unsure which way to go. The rumbling was now accompanied by a low, guttural growl, as if something massive was stirring just beneath the surface.
A flash of movement caught his eye—a shadow darting across the left path, quick and fluid. Aiden’s breath caught in his throat. He had seen enough horror movies to know that following the shadow was a bad idea, but staying put wasn’t an option either.
Gripping his gear tightly, Aiden chose the right path, hoping it would lead him closer to the surface—and away from whatever was waking up in the bowels of Aetheria.
The corridor narrowed as he moved deeper, the walls closing in around him. The temperature dropped, his breath visible in the cold air as he pressed on. Every step felt heavier, as if the very air was thick with the weight of impending doom.
The rumbling grew more intense, the ground beneath him trembling with each step. Aiden’s mind raced, searching for answers, for some way to prevent the catastrophe he had glimpsed in the Watchers’ vision. But the truth was elusive, hidden behind layers of ancient secrets and forgotten knowledge.
As he turned a corner, Aiden stumbled into another chamber. This one was different—smaller, more intimate, with walls covered in intricate carvings that glowed faintly in the dim light. In the center of the room stood a pedestal, atop which rested a small, glowing orb. The light emanating from it was soft and warm, a stark contrast to the cold, harsh atmosphere of the rest of the structure.
Aiden approached the orb cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. The moment he laid eyes on it, he felt a strange connection, as if the orb was calling to him, urging him to take it.
He reached out, his fingers hovering inches above the orb. The moment his skin made contact, a jolt of energy surged through him, and the chamber was suddenly filled with blinding light.
Aiden gasped, his vision whitewashed by the intensity. The orb pulsed in his hand, the energy coursing through his veins like liquid fire. Images flashed before his eyes—brief, fragmented glimpses of a time long past, of the Watchers, the ancient civilizations they had protected, and the cataclysmic event that had nearly destroyed them all.
But there was more—something the Watchers had hidden, something even they had feared. A force older than time itself, sealed away to prevent its power from consuming everything.
And now, that seal was breaking.
Aiden’s eyes snapped open as the vision faded, leaving him gasping for breath. The orb’s glow dimmed slightly, its energy still pulsing but less intense. He stumbled back, nearly dropping the orb in his shock.
The rumbling had stopped, replaced by an eerie silence that settled over the chamber like a shroud. Aiden glanced around, his mind reeling from the revelation.
He had found it—the key to Aetheria’s greatest secret. But with it came the knowledge that he had also awakened something far more dangerous, something that could spell the end of everything if it wasn’t stopped.
