Chapter Twenty Four

Something woke Jared up.
It was dark in his room, and it surprised him that it was night already. He slept longer than he wanted too. He looked over at his phone and saw that it was past eleven in the evening. A knock sounded at his window making him jerk up in bed with a frown on his face.
Someone was trying to get in his room. He got out of bed and turned on his light. He didn't know what should shock him more. That someone was trying to break in or the simple fact that it was Mila at his window in the dead of night.
"You know, instead of standing there staring at me you could open the damn window and let me in." Her voice muffled through the glass.
He snapped out of his shock and opened it to let her in. "What are you doing here?"
She stumbled, trying her best to not fall flat on her face as she lifted one leg, then the other. The brisk walk did nothing to appease her drunkenness or her anger towards him. She straightened with a hard look and shoved him in the chest.
"What the hell?!" He scoffed, stumbling back a bit from her sudden attack on his person.
"What the hell? What the hell?! What the hell is with you?!"
He was completely bewildered by her sudden outburst. What was wrong with her?
"First you get me a freaking DJ and said you were coming. Then I find out that, no, you're not coming because you have more important things to do with your time. Then...then I get a damn gift like this!"
She was slowly advancing on him causing him to back away. She shoved the necklace in his face waiting for him to say something.
"It's just a gift Mila and I never said I had more important things to do. Something just came up that's all." He told her in a quiet voice.
She dropped her hand and sat down heavily on his bed. Just as quickly as the anger came, it was gone, replaced by tears that would not yet fall.
"I don't understand you. I should hate you for all the things you say to me, but I find it hard too. I wanted you to be there and you weren't."
If she hadn't been drunk in that moment, she would have been horrified at the words that were spilling out of her mouth. She figured that this all had to be some dream. There was no way she would ever say any of this if it weren't.
He stared at her, his heart pounding against his chest. He carefully approached her, making sure that she wasn't going to start yelling at him again. When she just sits there looking and playing with the necklace he had given, he figured it was a good sign for him to talk now.
Bending down to her level, he reached out a hand and lifted her face up for him to see. His heart gave a sharp pain when he saw the tears that were pooling in her beautiful eyes.
"Why?" He whispered.
She hiccups. "Why what?" she asked stupidly.
"Why did you want me there? Why are you here now and not back at your party?"
She shrugged. "The party was lame when I found out you weren't going to be there, and I pretty much just tolerated it." She hiccupped again, looking back at her hands.
"What about Evan?" He held his breath, finding it hard to believe that she was saying all this to him.
"What about him? He didn't even give me anything. Some date. This is not what I had in mind for a first date." She mumbled.
He couldn't help it any longer. He takes a hold of her cheeks, making her look back up at him with curious eyes. He doesn't hesitate when he leans in and places his lips right on to hers. It was meant to be a simple, gentle kiss. But when he tried to pull away, she followed and didn't let go, causing her to fall right into his lap as he backed away, falling on his ass instead.
He rolled her to the ground, putting himself on top of her as she continued the sloppy kiss that it was fast becoming. Pushing himself up, making her finally release his lips, he frowned down at her.
"Mila, have you been drinking?"
She had her eyes halfway closed. "Um no, well punch if that's what you mean."
"No." he said slowly. "Was there any alcohol in it?"
She giggled. "Of course not."
Frowning at her again, he sat her up beside him and he leaned in to smell her breath. But once he got close to her face she didn't think, she acted. She lands her lips right back onto his, shoving her tongue right in as the shock had taken over him.
He needed to stop this. It was clear that she was dead drunk. But he had desperately wanted this for so long that his will was weak and barely there at best. All reason flying out the window he kisses her back just as enthusiastically.
He didn't realize that she had pulled him back down on top of her. He jerked when he felt her hand on his bare skin just beneath his shirt, sliding with a gentle and soft caress, making goosebumps to pop out on his flesh where she was leaving a heavenly trail.
But he needed to stop this, before it went any further. Releasing her lips, he said, "Mila, we have to stop. You don't know what you're doing."
"Yes, I do, Jared. I want you." Her voice was breathy, her eyes glazed over.
That almost did his undoing. Resting his forehead against hers, he tried to compose himself and get his will back to being stronger than it was at the moment. It would be so easy to just give in, but he knew he couldn't do that. She was drunk and even though in her state of mind she wanted this, once she sobered up and realized what she was doing she was going to freak. He just knew it.
"No, you don't Mila. You're drunk and don't even know what you're saying."
She pushed at him getting him to roll off her. "I'm not drunk. I would have to drink alcohol to be drunk."
She clumsily got on the bed and sat down. He rejected her and she felt stupid. She laid down, closing her eyes, not wanting to look at him anymore. Jared got up as well, feeling a little guilty that he had to push her away like that. It wasn't like he truly wanted to stop, but he wasn't the type of person that would just take advantage of her in the state that she was in.
He stood there staring down at her. If she had drunk enough, she wasn't going to remember any of this come morning. Bending down he moves her hair gently off her face where it had fallen over.
"Mila?"
The answer he got was a snore.
Great she falls asleep on him. For once he was going to say what he had always wanted to tell her. Even though she couldn't hear him, he knew he wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise.
"Why do you have to torture me like this? You have no idea how much I love you." He whispered, still grazing the side of her cheek.
Very quietly he hears the whisper of his name passing her lips in her sleep. Looking down he sees the necklace still clenched tightly in her hand, a hand that was pressed against her chest like she was holding something so dear to her.
Getting up, he grabbed his coat and went to pick her up into his arms. She wasn't as heavy as he thought she might be and holding her this close to his body he felt the warmth of sensations pierce through him. She felt so tiny in his embrace. He couldn't help but lean his face in the curve of her neck and inhaled her intoxicating scent.
Before he lost his nerve, he leaves the room as quietly as he can.
