Chapter Thirty Eight

Later that evening Mila was in her room reading a celebrity magazine which she found very dramatic. Her door burst open, and her cousin Kristan makes her way in.
"Hello." She simply says looking her room in distaste.
"Please Kris, make yourself at home." She states sarcastically. "What do you want?"
Kristan shrugged her shoulders "You have a very dull sense of style Mil, this place is ugly.”
Mila scowls at her. Her room consisted of home made things of either from her parents, Selena, grand parents or herself. She had pictures everywhere. Her awards from school, ribbons from contests, along with her soft ball and soccer uniforms with trophies, aligned on the wall. "Don't come in here and insult my life Kris, at least I have a sense of hominess and belonging."
Kristan gave her a withering look for she knew all too well that Mila was everyone’s favorite, even her own parents. They always told Kristan, "Why can’t you be more like your cousin Mila? At least She never complains.”
Kristan looks at her dresser and gasps. "That’s beautiful at least."
It was the necklace Mila had gotten for her birthday and still can't figure out who gave it to her. "Don’t touch it.” She snaps.
She wasn’t in the mood for her spoiled cousin Hastiness haughtiness and oh so lovable character. She wanted her to leave and let her be alone.
"Well aren’t we touchy, I was just looking at it. Who gave it to you?”
Mila didn’t say anything to that. Mayhe if she kept silent Kristan would think she don't want to tell her.
"Was it your boyfriend Evan?" She asks sweetly with a small smirk on her face.
"Actually my brother got that for her, for her birthday gift. Spent every dime he had to get it specially made." Selena said from the doorway, holding a tray of food for two.
Both Mila and Kristan had identical shocked looks on their faces. Kristan looked at the necklace and rage filled her. She wanted to snatch the thing and destroy it but then she remembered why she had come here in the first place and smiled.
"How nice of him to do that. What does Evan think about another guy giving you such an expensive gift Mel?"
Mila was still too shocked to answer. Jared had given her that? But when? How come she doesn’t remember it? Then a flash of memory came to mind that Selima had given her a box when they arrived at the birthday party. Didn’t she say it was from her brother or something? Was that was in the box? Why doesn’t she remember opening it?
"Evan doesn't mind, does he Mila?" Selena asks as she put the tray down on her bed.
Mila looked at the two girls. "Of course not, or at least he never said otherwise." She frowns.
"Why did you come here Kristan?" Selena asks, clearly stating she didn't like the girl.
Kristan walked back to the door and smiled. "I just came here to tell Mila personally that I just found out that I'm pregnant." The young girl giggles at the complete shock on both their faces. "You are officially the first ones to know. Not even my mom and dad know yet."
Of course they were going to be horrified when they find out, but they'll get over it and forgive her like they always do.
"Pregnant! You’re only fourteen!" Mila screeches as she stands to face her.
How could the girl be so stupid and be happy about it at the same time?
"Yes well. I have support but that’s not the best or important part." She says looking down at her manicured nails.
"What is then?" Selena bit out, wanting to slap the girl for being a dumb moron.
"Who the father is." She states with a shit eating grin.
Selena’s and Mila’s faces turned ashen, thinking both the same thing. "He would never do such a thing, especially with someone like you!" Selena seethes, her body beginning to shake. She refuses to believe that Jared was idiotic enough to get into bed with his worst nightmare. The only way that would ever happen is if he was drugged.
Kristan rolls her eyes. “It’s not Jared, even though I wish he was the father."
"Oh thank god." Selena breathed in absolute relief. Kristan gritted her teeth at her statement but then smiled sweetly again.
"Nope, it’s Evan's." And with that she shuts the door to their stunned silence.
Selena couldn't believe what the girl had just said. Evan's? She quickly looks at Mila who was frozen and clutching the magazine tightly in her fists, her mind reeling. Evans? Kristan and Evan? A baby? But they didn't even like each other. When did this happened? Mila didn’t realize that her body was shaking.
"Mila I..." Selena didn’t know what to say.
Mila snapped out of it and slowly got up from the bed. "I um... I’m tired Selena, sorry about the food, thank you for stopping by but I think I would like to lie down and be alone for right now." She turned down her covers on her bed.
Selena watched her face and didn’t know what to do. She grabs the tray of the uneaten food and went to the door. "Mil?" she says to her.
She looks up at her with an expressionless look.
"I’m always here for you, you know that. Call me when you’re ready and I promise I will be here." With that she shut the door.
Mila plopped down on the bed with a heavy heart. She felt raw with emotions. She felt sick to her stomach at just the thought what Evan didn’t even bother to tell her. Was this the problem he had to face alone? She remembered him telling her to promise that she would hear his side of the story. But she didn't make such a promise, and she didn’t care what he had to say. No matter what elaborate story he had, it doesn't change the fact that he had slept with Kristan.
There was no doubt in Mila’s mind that Kristan spoke the truth and enjoyed doing it. She wanted to rub it in Mila's face, but why? Did she hate het that much? Was she that jealous of her? She felt tears coming and refused to allow them to fall. She was angry, hurt and felt betrayed. Her first instinct was to call Evan and demand his confession and why he did it, but that’s not what she did. Instead, she took out her address book and rummaged through it until she found what she was looking for. She needed to get away, she didn’t want to confront anybody or see anyone's faces.
She didn't want to talk about how her life was drastically changing. She had made a mistake of even agreeing to be Evan’s girlfriend and now look where it has gotten her. A boyfriend who dumps her on the same day she finds out he impregnated her cousin and who knows how far along she was. A cousin who hates her for reasons she doesn’t understand and Jared, who is no longer her friend for accusations she didn’t commit, and words exchanged that are irreversible. She took out her cell phone and dialed the number that she was looking for.
"Hello." An older woman’s voice answered.
“Aunt Sarah?" Mila asks with a cracked voice.
“Mila honey, is that you?"
"Yeah, it’s me."
"Oh, how are you sweetie? I’ve been meaning to call your dad." She sounded excited.
"My dad was actually talking about you too. I know he misses you." Mila tells her.
Aunt Sarah didn’t say anything for a few moments. "Mila, what’s wrong?" She sounded worried.
She gave a small exhale. "Do you remember when you came to visit last year and told me that at any time I would like to come see you to just give you a call?"
"Yes, I remember."
“Well does that offer still stand?" She asks, her voice on the verge of tears.
“Of course it does, but aren't you still in school?"
She looks around her room. "Well, that’s just it Aunt Sarah, I was thinking that maybe I could stay with you for a long while. I’m... I’m not doing okay right now."
She was really trying to not cry but Aunt Sarah could hear her voice shake with the unshed tears.
"Have you talked to your parents?" She asks her.
"I was actually hoping you could." Mila answers, picking at a fray string on her pants.
"Okay." She states simply.
She blinks. "Really?"
"Yes, I don’t know what’s going on, but something is. I will talk to your parents tonight and purchase your ticket for tomorrow evening. Then when you get here you and me are going to have very long talk. If I'm going to have you here I need to know the reason Mila understood?"
Mila closed her eyes feeling a little weight lift off her. "I promise Aunt Sarah."
"Okay good. I'm going to call your parents right now."
"I love you." She says, grateful she wasn’t asking any questions right then.
"I love you too."
She hangs up the phone and keeping her mind off things, knowing she’s making the night decision starts packing some of her things, because by tomorrow evening she was heading to Arizona.
Mila was running away.
It was Always You
