Chapter Thirty Three
Although it had only been two weeks since his release from the hospital, the doctor released Rex to return to work on light duty only. His job for the next two weeks would be behind a desk instead of behind a steering wheel. It was his first day back to work.
Jayme heard Rex’s voice and opened her eyes to see him standing over the bed in his uniform. “Jayme… I have to go to work now.” Rex said and leaned down to kiss her. “I’ll be back around seven thirty. But I’ll drive by several times to check on you and the house. We shouldn’t have a problem here, as he’s not familiar with Jaxson’s house.” Rex said.
“Not yet.” Jayme said. “But it’s just a matter of time before he figures it out.”
“You’re probably right. But for now, make sure you stay vigilant, but try to relax.” Rex said before kissing her again. “I’ll see you tonight.”
Jayme watched as he disappeared from the bedroom, then pulled herself out of bed. Looking down at Bella, Jayme saw she was awake and moving. As Bella saw Jayme, she smiled at her. Bella smiled back and picked her up to change and feed her before going downstairs.
Rachel was in the kitchen when Jayme came down, carrying Bella. “Good morning.” She said.
“Good morning.” Rachel responded. “Here, I can take her while you get some coffee, or something to eat.”
“Ok.” Jayme smiled and handed Bella to her.
“I just love babies.” Rachel said as she laid Bella on the table and sat her up in her arms. Talking and cooing with the infant, Rachel occupied her. “You could even take a shower, if you wanted, and I could watch Bella.”
“That, would be great.” Jayme said as she poured herself a bowl of cereal.
After eating, Jayme took Rachel’s advice and took a hot shower. It was what she needed to feel the relaxation from the steamy, hot water. But it also made her feel the exhaustion worse as well. It was nearly four in the afternoon when she decided to go to her parents house, her mother would be home and her father would soon be home too.
But when Jayme arrived at four thirty, no one was there yet. She set up the bassinet in the living room and laid Bella in it to take a nap before eating again. It was nearly six when she heard a knock on the door. Instantly alarmed, Jayme went to the door and looked through the peephole. Her heart sank and her jaw dropped when she saw who was standing at her door.
Stepping back, Jayme opened the door to make sure that Scott was the person she actually saw. “Scott?” She said, astonished.
“Jayme…” He said and stepped toward her, wrapping his arm around her.
“Scott, I thought you were dead…” Jayme said, still in shock.
“No, I survived…” Scott said.
“But I saw you, I felt your neck and there was no pulse.”
“They revived me at the hospital, but kept my survival a secret because of Jim.” Scott said.
“But why didn’t I know about this?” Jayme said.
“Because, the police were watching you, watching Jim. They saw his every move, but are unable to capture him. He’s elusive.” Scott said. “Then I saw you with yet, another man, and knew I’d better return to you.”
“Scott… you cheated on me.”
“No, I didn’t… Kelly was a business associate. I met her in public places to do business. Jim thought we were having an affair, paid a private investigator to follow her and discovered our business ventures. He was still convinced she was cheating with me and went after us both. He killed her first, left her body in that field. Then, he came after me. He shot me at home, in the office. But, I never cheated on you. You are the love of my life and I can’t live without you.” Scott said, stepping closer to wrap his arms around her. “I am your husband, Jayme, you should be with me.”
“I can’t, Scott… I just can’t. I have feelings for Rex, I always have.” Jayme said.
“Jayme, I’m the one you married. You have my last name.” Scott said.
“Yes, that was before I thought you were dead.” Jayme said.
Taking her hand, Scott dropped to his knees. “Please, Jayme, I love you. You’re my wife, and you have our baby. I feel so horrible because I wasn’t there for the birth of our baby girl.”
“I wasn’t alone.” Jayme simply said.
“He was with you then too?” Scott said. “Damn him.”
“Scott, Rex is not exactly a stranger. I’ve known him for many, many years. He’s a loyal friend.”
“Yes, Rex, that is his name. Honey, he can’t love you more than me… you have our child.”
“Yes, well, I have his child too.” Jayme said and rubbed her belly.
“You’re pregnant? Slut!” He shouted. “That was pretty damn fast after you thought I was murdered, don’t you think?”
“No, not when Rex and I finally discovered the love we each have for each other. He’s my soulmate.” Jayme said.
“No, Jayme, no…” Scott said.
The look on Scott’s face told Jayme that he was growing angry. “I want you to get your shit, and our daughter, and come with me. I’m not asking, and I’m not waiting more than five minutes, so, you’d better get moving.”
“Scott, I’m not going anywhere with you.” Jayme said.
“Dammit, Jayme, don’t make me do this…” Scott said, gritting his teeth.
Walking to the bassinet, Scott picked up Bella. “I said right now, get moving.” Scott said, now angry.
“Scott…” Jayme said, never seeing this side of him. “Put her down. I said I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Scott walked up to Jayme and handed Bella to her. Next, he grabbed Jayme’s long, brown hair and pulled her toward the door. But Jayme stopped and stood her ground. “It’s time for you to go.” Jayme said.
“No, not without you. I’ll stay here all night.” Scott said and took her hand.
“No, you won’t.” Jayme said and jerked her hand from his grasp.
“My patience is wearing thin, Jayme…” Scott said as he grabbed her around the wrist and pulled her toward the door.
“Where do you expect to go?” Jayme asked. “You can’t go back to our house in Silver Creek, I’ve sold it.”
“You sold our house?” Scott asked, sounding furious.
“Well, yes.”
“Why?”
“You can’t imagine just how it feels to come home and find your spouse murdered on the floor. I didn’t want to be in that house, let alone live in it anymore. Right after you were murdered, I moved here, to my parents house, and sold our house. I didn’t want anything to do with it.”
“I guess I can see your point. So… where are we going to live?” Scott asked.
“We’re not going to live anywhere. I already have a place to live, and it’s not with you.”
“Jayme…”
“No, Scott, now get out of this house.” Jayme shouted.
“Not without you.” Scott said. “If you don’t come with me right now, you’ll regret it.”
“What are you going to do, you’re not a violent person.”
“No, Jayme, you haven’t seen that side of me yet, but believe me, I do have a dark side. And if you don’t come with me now, you’ll pull it out of me.”
“I’ve had enough…” Jayme said and began to push Scott to the door.
Scott turned around and grabbed Jayme’s arm. “No, stop.” He said, standing his ground.
At that moment, he grabbed her arm tightly and pulled her out of the house. “I’m done being nice…” Scott said and pulled her toward his car.
Jayme struggled against him to free his grip but it was so tight, it was hurting her arm. “Dammit, Scott, let me go.” Jayme shouted but Scott did not stop.
Opening up his drivers door, he shoved her in the car and across the seat as he scooted in beside her. Keeping his grip on her arm, he shut his door and started the car, backing out of the driveway. With one hand, he shifted the car into drive and drove away from the house, leaving the front door wide open.
