Chapter Forty Six
“Dammit, Scott, what the hell are you doing?” Jayme asked, angry.
“I’m taking what is mine.” Scott answered.
“We’re not your property, Scott. We don’t belong to you.” Jayme said. “At least let’s leave Bella out of this….”
“What do you mean?” Scott asked.
“Let’s leave her at a fire department. She doesn’t need to be subject to this type of behavior.”
“What the hell are you talking about, Jayme? Are you saying that I’m bad for my daughter?”
“Yes, actually. This, what you’re doing. She doesn’t need to learn this as normal behavior.” Jayme said.
“Then stop running away from me. You’re the one who’s being dramatic.”
“Why can’t you understand that I don’t want to be with you anymore. What do I have to do to make you understand?” Jayme’s question was more of a statement.
“Jayme, I’ll never understand why you don’t love me anymore. I mean, I gave you everything you ever wanted. You married me. You said you’d love me forever. I believed you.” Scott said.
“You died… I got over it. My heart is healed now. I love someone else. You can’t do a damn thing to change that.” Jayme said.
Scott said nothing, just pushed his foot down on the gas pedal. Jayme felt and heard the truck speeding up quickly. Glancing over, she saw he was doing eighty and still accelerating.”Scott… what are you doing?” Jayme asked, beginning to panic.
“If I can’t have you, we both might as well be dead…” Scott said and by the tone of his voice, Jayme knew he was serious.
“Scott!” Jayme screamed as she saw he was now doing over one hundred miles per hour.
He didn’t respond to her. Jayme reached over and turned off the truck, jerking the keys out of the ignition. With the window partially down, she threw the keys out the window as Scott fought to maintain control of the stalled car. The steering was tight and the brakes failed as he neared a curve.
“Jayme, you’re going to make us crash…” Scott yelled, still controlling the car. Jayme looked into the back seat at Bella as she braced herself in case of impact.
Bella was awake in her car seat and just watching Jayme. Jayme was scared for her and Bella’s life with the speed they were going and Scott’s sudden outlook. “Scott, you have to stop…” Jayme yelled.
“No, I won’t…” He said as he veered off the road, hitting the ditch and flipping the vehicle. The truck rolled six times before it rested on all four tires. Scott and Jayme were both knocked out from the crash. Bella was in the back seat, unscathed. Although, Bella was traumatized purely from the impact and movement of the vehicle as it rolled and she sat crying.
Merely four minutes passed before another vehicle passed and saw the wreckage. Stopping to look and check for people, they called the local number to summons the police and ambulance. First, the man heard Bella’s cries from the back seat and forced open the door with a crowbar. Getting Bella out of the truck, the woman attended to her as the man pried open Jayme’s door.
Grabbing Jayme by her shirt and jeans, he pulled her from the truck and carried her away from the truck, where the woman was checking on Bella. As the man began to walk back to the truck to pull Scott out, Jayme began to wake up. Her head was pounding to match the bloody wound from hitting the window repeatedly.
As she opened her eyes, she had no recollection of the accident or the abduction. She looked at the truck and expected to see Rex. But when she saw Scott, she remembered the incident of him getting into the truck, but didn’t remember the accident. The woman saw Jayme instantly become uncomfortable and terrified as Jayme pointed at Scott.
“That man kidnapped my daughter and I…” Jayme said.
“Tom…” The woman hollered and motioned for him to stop. “Put him down over there…” She said.
“Why?” The man said.
“Just put him down and come here…” She said to him.
The man put Scott down close to the truck and walked back to Jayme, Bella and the woman. “What’s going on?”
“She said he kidnapped her and the girl.” The woman informed him.
“Did you call the police?” He asked.
“Yes, and the ambulance.”
Jayme remained in a lying position, not wanting to move. She was sore from the impacts, hitting over and over again. Although she was sore all over her body, she didn’t think anything was broken. “Is he dead?” She asked the man.
“No, he has a pulse.” The man answered.
At that moment, they heard the sirens coming from the distance. But with the speed they traveled, the police arrived first. As the policeman approached the wreckage, he saw them sitting away from the vehicle, then saw Scott, laying closer to the vehicle.
First, he approached Scott, kneeling down to feel his pulse. Then he approached the others. “That man needs to be arrested…” The woman hollered.
“What’s going on?” The police officer asked.
“He kidnapped me and my daughter.” Jayme said as he continued to walk toward them.
“Are you alright?” the officer asked Jayme.
“Yes, I think so.” Jayme answered. “And I think Bella is ok too.”
“Ok, the ambulance is on it’s way, we’ll have you checked out.” The officer said, inspecting the wound on her head.
“I’m just concerned about him, don’t let him escape…” Jayme said, pointing at Scott.
“I got him… Tell me what happened.” The officer requested.
“He’s my ex-husband, who I assumed was dead for like three months. He won’t accept that it’s over between us and keeps abducting our daughter and me.” Jayme explained.
“So, that’s his daughter?”
“Yes, that doesn’t matter, he’s been breaking the law. He tried to kill us all, crashing the way he did.”
“What do you mean, like he intentionally crashed the vehicle?” The officer said.
“Yes.” Jayme answered.
“Oh, that’s different…” He said. “The ambulance is here, so is back up. We’ll get him to the hospital under supervision.”
“Thank you.” Jayme said.
As the ambulance arrived, the man and woman helped Jayme and Bella toward the road where the ambulance were pulling up. Jayme climbed into the back of the ambulance and laid on the bed. Thanking the man and woman as he put Bella, and her car seat, into the back of the ambulance, Jayme watched as they put Scott on a gurney and took him to the other ambulance. Jayme knew he would now be in custody of the police.
At the hospital, they examined Jayme and took x-rays to look for broken bones and other damage. Finding no significant damage, they determined her to just be battered and bruised. However, the wound in her abdomen had ripped open from the impact of rolling. The doctor treated it during the exam.
As the police approached Jayme in her room, she could tell something was wrong. “Mrs. Adams, we’ve located your husband, he’s on his way but we must warn you that Scott has escaped. Two of the paramedics are dead and he’s gone without a trace.”
“What do you mean, without a trace? He was unconscious…?” Jayme mumbled, thinking out loud.
“He killed the two paramedics, stole the ambulance and drove it to the hospital. Portraying one of the paramedics, he slipped through the hospital and out a door. He’s gone.” The policeman explained.
“Scott killed two paramedics?” Jayme said, almost surprised. Nothing he does these days surprises her much. “Dammit!” Jayme cussed. “I can’t believe he escaped.”
“We’re currently searching for him now, here and the surrounding counties, statewide…” The officer said. “With the security we have here, I’m pretty sure you’re safe.”
Jayme looked over at Bella, who was asleep in the crib. “Pretty sure isn’t good enough.”
“Your husband will be here soon.” The officer said. “Until then, we’ll have an officer sit outside your door for protection.”
“That would be helpful.” Jayme said.
“If you have any problems, just notify him.” the officer said before leaving.
Jayme went to Bella, knowing she would be getting hungry. Picking her up, Jayme carried her back to the bed where she sat to change Bella with the items the hospital provided. Then she fed her, and tried to relax while she waited for Rex. Feeling safe and content, Jayme closed her eyes.
