Chapter 13

A shattering sound echoed in the empty room as Amara tossed the vase in the distance.

The antique, beautiful vase intricately designed broke apart into pieces as its broken pieces flew here and there.

But it didn't matter when she was looking at this news on her iPad.

“*Luke Harvey, the son of the Managing Director of Harvey Co & Co, the leading company in the Financial securities industry was spotted taking a private plane for the airport this afternoon with a Co worker, Amelia James. But what was shocking was that he was spotted making out with the said Co-worker as they entered the arrival gates of the private runway. Now, rumors are flying around that his recent marriage with Amara Wilson was one against his choices causing him to take such a drastic step. We are trying to get in touch with the Har–,”*

Just like the vase, the iPad was thrown across the room with a force, it didn't break the gadget but put the voice of the news anchor broadcasting through it on a pause.

Amara took a deep breath and controlled the urge to scream.

How dare that man do this to her? When she encountered Amelia in the company this morning she didn't think much of the unnecessary attitude she was giving her and ignored the tone of triumph that glazed over her words while she tried to ridicule Amara. She wasn't worth the hassle.

But never in any way, would she have thought that the said woman was only bold enough to try to rile her up because they were planning this behind her back.

It wasn't about running away together, they wanted to humiliate her.

They could have left quietly. No one would have questioned why they were taking a private jet, people do that all the time for business.

But they had to stir a conspiracy in their wake.

She harshly wiped the angry tears from her eyes.

Someone knocked on the door and entered a few seconds later when she didn't give any response.

She turned her head to see Caroline, looking at her with a somber and pitiful expression.

Amara bit her tongue to stop herself from snapping at her sister-in-law.

She was not the one who did her wrong but she also didn't need anyone's pity.

Amara despised the feeling.

“Grandpa is asking for you,” Caroline said quietly and then gestured towards the open bedroom door.

Nodding, Amara replied, “Give me a minute,” before she turned around and entered the bathroom.

She washed her face and patted it dry, not wanting her in-laws to see her in this state.

Already filled with so much emotional turbulence at once, she didn't need anything else to pile over her already full plate.

When she stepped out of the bathroom, she didn't see anyone. Caroline had already left. She probably saw Amara’s uncomfortable state and chose to give her some privacy before she faced the rest of the family members.

She got in the living room and saw her in-laws sitting together with different expressions on their faces.

Her mother-in-law was wiping her eyes while Elizabeth patted her back.

And her father-in-law, Colin Harvey was sitting on an armchair, his hand on his chin. His face clouded with darkness.

Jason's Dad was also there, he was just looking blankly at her while Caroline sat beside him.

Grandpa was sitting on the center couch his face pulled in a deep frown and his eyes mixed with both anger and disappeared.

While Jason sat on the other side of the couch with one leg on top of the other, his face blank, refusing to give anything away.

The atmosphere in the room was dark and brooding. Unsettling.

“Amara…,” Grandpa called her in a soft tone. She looked at him and he gestured for her to sit on the armchair beside him.

She reluctantly took a few steps and sat down.

He put his hand on top of hers, making Amara look up to meet his eyes. Besides the disappointment and anger he was feeling for Luke, there was also kindness and regret shining in his eyes for her.

“I did not know, he was about to pull such a stunt or I would have meddled before it came to this,” he tried to explain. She knew that much.

She knew he would have stopped him, but she was also aware of the fact that he would have only stopped Luke because he didn't want such a scandal to tarnish his business and family's name.

He might have been kind to her but she knew her place was still far away from one he had for his kith and kin.

So she just nodded her head at his explanation not wanting to open her mouth when she didn't know what might come out of it.

She heard him sigh before he retracted his hand away from hers.

“I don't what I can do in this matter other than track him back and that would have been easy if he didn't escape somewhere I don't have much influence in,” he added. Grandpa saw her red-rimmed eyes that indicated she had cried before coming here.

He mistook them for one of heartbreak when she had only crier because she couldn't shred his grandson to pieces for humiliating her like this.

“I had said not to marry him against his wishes, he and Amelia were so happy–,” Amara turned to see her mother-in-law, Julie crying as she said this but instantly stopped when her husband called her name loudly.

Her father-in-law was glaring daggers at his wife for opening her mouth. Amara couldn't be bothered by all of this. She has had enough.

Even if they succeed in bringing Luke home there is little to no chance, she would be willing to stay with him again and continue with this nonsense of a marriage.

“I want a Divorce!,” she exclaimed and stood up from her seat.

“Even if you bring him back, I don't think I can continue with a cheating scoundrel!!,” She continued, ashamed and unbothered about how she used such a derogatory term to call her husband in front of his family.

Luke was very well deserving of the word. They should be thankful she didn't use the harsh and inappropriate words that were sitting just at the tip of her tongue.

Julie gasped and cried out, “How dare you call my son like that?!”

Amara matched her glare and took a step forward before replying, “Why? Is he not? A cheater?” She deliberately uttered the words to edge her mother-in-law.

Julie wasn't disappointed or upset or even ashamed of her son's acts. She was even defending him in his absence after the stunt he pulled.

She was about to rebut Amara when suddenly Grandpa shouted, “ENOUGH!”

He glared at Julie and she instantly backed down and slumped on her seat before he looked over at Amara.

Grandpa knew she might be feeling overwhelmed by all that was happening and since it was his grandson who was at fault here, he didn't reprimand her for her choice of words.

“Amara, I understand, you must be feeling hurt and overwhelmed by Luke's behavior but I can't approve of a divorce between you two. Firstly, because it was signed on the agreement that you two shall continue your marriage for at least three years. Secondly, there are certain clauses that can be your base to apply for a divorce, and what Luke has done doesn't count in that,” he told Amara.

Amara was left looking at him in bewilderment, she laughed. She laughed like crazy, so hard that the corner of her eyes was filled with water.

She stopped in a few seconds and took a deep breath before releasing it, and then she looked up at Grandpa Harvey with a deadpan expression.

“So what you mean is that infidelity is not one of the reasons in the agreement I can use as a ground to ask for a divorce?” her words stunned everyone in the room.

Grandpa Harvey turned his head away from her in shame.

“Wow! Just wow!” Amara softly muttered before turning around and getting out of the Mansion.

No one tried to stop her.

In the wee hours of the night, she found herself drinking in the dark corner of a dimly lit bar.

The club was filled with people obnoxiously hooting and shouting over the loud rock music that was playing as they all danced to the rhythm with their sweaty bodies.

The whole club smelt like cigarettes and booze.

She glances at the empty scotch glasses lying around her carelessly. At some point, she had given up on using them and started drinking straight from the bottle.

But she could still not feel herself drunk just tipsy. She has lived a wild life during her college years and they had built a solid Alcohol tolerance in her.

She was proud of that before but now she just wanted to drown in her misery.

Her husband was cheating on her. And it should have been fine if he had kept it a secret. But that shameless man announced it to the whole world and now she would be on the receiving end of humiliation, pity, shame, and whatnot and she wanted none of that.

And the cherry on the cake was that she couldn't even ask for a divorce!!

She groaned and took a huge gulp from the bottle when she felt her phone ringing.

Holding her phone up she saw the caller ID.

*“Jason Harvey”*
