Chapter 11
“Human boyfriend?” Jace asked slowly, turning his head to look at me. “What does she mean by human boyfriend?”
“It’s true my darling,” Jenny simpered quietly, while patting his arm. “Your Mate already has a boyfriend, and he is a human!”
“Rosalie, surely you know the rules about keeping our secret safe!” Alpha Julian said quietly, but with a flicker of annoyance crossing over his face. “You can’t have a human boyfriend. Not now that you are Mated with Jace. Not ever in fact!”
“It’s true! I’m sorry! You have to remember though, I’ve led the life of a human all these years,” I began, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. “But Sam doesn’t know about me. I swear! I haven’t told anyone.”
“Do you want this Sam?” Jace croaked, letting go of my hands and stepping back towards his parents. “Or me?”
“No! I mean, I did want Sam until I met you! I’m going to finish it with him I promise! It’s only you I want!” I hissed, trying to keep my voice down. Nervously, I glanced over at my parents and watched as my Dad stepped forward.
“It’s our fault. We never told Rosalie about her true self. We forced her to lead a normal human life and she ended up getting a boyfriend. We have told her to get rid of him, which she has yet to do. But I can assure you, the boy doesn’t know our secret!”
“Hmm, well then we have a bit of a problem then don’t we,” Alpha Julian replied, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “I’d like to say that I am a kind, generous Alpha, so here is what we shall do. You have until next Saturday to get rid of the boy, Rosalie, otherwise, I will have no choice but to let my wolves step in and deal with the situation.”
“She has her college prom next Saturday night. It would be the perfect setting to say goodbye to her past life!” my dad replied, nodding in agreement.
“Wait!” Jace exclaimed loudly. “You can’t be serious! You are thinking about letting Rose to her prom! That’s like dangling a mouse in front of a cat!”
“Why ever not!” I butted in angrily. “It’s a rite of passage for humans. I have to go to that prom!”
“Because it’s a full moon that night you idiot!” Jace thundered. “Even if you manage to control yourself for the night, you will still turn into a wolf without choice by midnight! The whole college will be there to witness it!”
“Jace is right!” Jenny replied. “We can’t go after an entire year group of college students to keep the secret safe. The humans will notice all these dead kids turning up!”
“I will make sure I am gone by midnight. I promise! Please let me go!” I begged, looking over at my parents and then over to Alpha Julian and Jenny hopefully.
“You can go, but I will be stationing a few of my warriors around the venue to keep an eye on you and to get you out before the change takes over. You need to get rid of that boy by then and then leave. Got it?” Alpha Julian ordered, staring at me dead in the eye.
“Yes Alpha!” I replied, feeling a knot of unease beginning to form in my throat.
Glancing up, I looked over at Jace, who looked sad and angry all at the same time. Gently grabbing his hand, I tried to pull him towards me for a hug, but he roughly pushed me away.
“Get off! Do you really think I want you around me when you are still tied to that filthy human? Thinking of it, you reek of him! Come back to me once you are rid of him. I can’t love you if you’re not truly mine!” he snarled before turning on his heel and storming off inside with his mother quickly following.
Looking at my parents, I sighed and pointed after Jace and Jenny, “Can we go home? I kind of don’t want to be here anymore. Please?”
“Yes, you’re right honey. Let’s go!” my Mum soothed. “None of this would have happened if Jenny kept her big mouth shut! We had the situation under control!”
Quickly, me, Mum and Dad walked back towards the house and stepped inside. The house was empty but as we walked through the hall, we could hear muffled arguing coming from the lounge, which sounded like Jace and his parents. Not bothering to listen in or even say goodbye, I pulled open the front door and marched towards our car. The lights flickered as we approached and silently, I pulled open the door before slamming it shut behind me. Moodily, I stared out of the window, while Dad reversed the car back down the drive and out on to the main road.
*It’s for the best you know, *a voice rang out in my head. My wolf.
*You can be quiet too! You’ve got what you wanted,* I fumed.
*You know you want Jace too. We both do. He is our Mate after all.
And what about Sam? This is going to destroy him!
Do you even love Sam now that you have met Jace?
To be honest, I thought I did. Jace is everything I need. He is gorgeous, he is fast, and he is strong. When I am near him, it feels like I am whole. And now I’ve left the packhouse, it feels like a bit of me is missing.
Well, then you know what you need to do. You need to break up with Sam.
I know, but I don’t want to hurt him. A part of me still loves him too!
You will only end up hurting him more if you don’t let him go. If you really loved him, you would let him go. Before he gets hurt. Before the wolves gets to him.*
Sighing, I cut off the conversation with my wolf and stared out of the window as trees and houses whooshed past in a blur of colour. She was right. If I carried this on, then Alpha Julian would order his wolves to destroy Sam. I couldn’t do that to him. And saying goodbye to him and my old life at the prom would be the perfect setting to do it. Just as the car pulled into the drive, my phone began to trill noisily. Pulling it out of my pocked, I glanced down at the screen and saw it was a text from Beth.
*Ros, I’m sorry. We need to talk. I’ve missed you girl. Need help for finding a dress for prom. We can go shopping together. Hit me up. B x *
Tapping out a brief reply, I got out of the car and made my way to the front door. Following my parents into the kitchen, we sat down at the table and stared at each other for a moment, enjoying the peace and quiet.
“Well, that went well,” I muttered quietly. “So, what have we learnt today?”
“That you’re the true Mate for our Alpha-to-be and that you need to end it with Sam. Quickly! Apart from that, yes, today went really well!” my Mum grinned cheekily before a loud knock on the door made us jump.
Watching Dad leave the kitchen to go and answer it, I stood up and made my way to put the kettle on. Turning around once I had got all the cups out, I saw Dad standing in the door way with Sam, who was looking all hot and sexy in his bike leathers, which instantly made my heart flutter.
“Rosalie, I needed to see you!”
