Chapter 14
Gingerly grabbing on to the handrail, I gently stepped down on to the stairs and made my way back down to the kitchen, my dress rustling noisily behind me. It was now the evening of the prom and I had my hair all curled in to a chic updo, smoky eye make up applied to my face and I wore a large princess style aqua blue ball gown with matching silk clothes and high heeled shoes. I felt and looked like royalty. A lump formed in my throat as my mind briefly flickered about Sam and the impending breakup that I had to do. Entering the kitchen, I twirled my dress around in a circle to the delight of my eagerly awaiting parents.
“Oh Ros!” my Mum exclaimed happily. “You look so beautiful in that dress!”
“Thanks Mum!” I grinned happily before glancing across at my Dad who was smiling broadly but still looked worried.
“Yes, you look beautiful Rosalie,” Dad beamed widely. “I really do hope you enjoy tonight. Don’t forget, this is your last night as a normal human!”
“I know Dad,” I replied gently, trying my hardest not to let the tears flow. “I’ll make it my best night. I promise!”
“It’s not about making it your best memorable night,” Dad replied solemnly. “You know what is at stake here. One, it is full moon night and two, you must end it with Sam. You have let it go on for long enough. If you don’t finish it with the boy, some one else will step in and do it for you and it could lead to dire consequences for Sam!”
“And speaking of full moon night,” my Mum butted in quickly. “Do you know what happens at midnight?”
“Yes!” I replied quickly. “At midnight tonight, I will automatically turn in to a wolf and reveal my true form and there is nothing I can do to stop it.”
“Correct,” Dad nodded. “This means you must be out of that hall by no later than half past 11 tonight. It is imperative that you do so!”
“Why half past 11?” I replied curiously, looking across at Mum in confusion.
“Because you need to get back to the forests, where the rest of the pack shall be gathering and waiting for you. They need their Luna! Do you understand?”
“Yes Mum. I understand,” I replied quietly. “Go to the prom, have fun, make memories, end it with the human boyfriend, be out at half 11 and into the forests by midnight so that I can change into a wolf. What could go wrong?”
Dad looked at me thoughtfully while stroking his chin before shaking his head and sighing. Pulling me towards him, he gave me a massive hug before letting me go.
“This is your last chance. Jace will be furious if you do not follow through with your word,” Dad said gently. “We shouldn’t have let this go on for so long or at least, let you even enter this relationship. I know you love Sam, but please, for his safety. Let him go.”
Before I could answer, a loud beep echoed out from outside the house, which made Mum excitedly run to the kitchen window and peer outside.
“Oh, it’s here!” she exclaimed loudly, clapping her hands happily.
Following my parents outside, my eyes fell on a white stretch limo, waiting right outside my gate. The door opened and Jace stepped out along with two other men, who were both wearing dark grey suits and black sunglasses. As Jace began walking towards me, the two other men stood patiently by the car.
“Jace! What are you doing here?” I gasped in shock.
“Well, I haven’t seen you all week. And my princess deserves to attend the ball in style,” he replied casually, pulling me into his arms and holding me tightly. “You look absolutely stunning!”
“Thank you,” I replied softly, before burying my head into his chest and inhaling a deep breath of his cologne. It set my wolf senses tingling and I could hear my wolf purring with delight.
“Hmmm,” Jace murmured quietly in my ear. “I can sense just how much your wolf wants me. It turns me on. You’re mine and don’t forget it baby!”
“I’m yours and no one else’s,” I replied softly. “I want you too. I miss your touch and I miss you.”
“Well, let’s see what tonight brings then,” Jace winked before pulling away and loudly introducing the other two men who were still standing there like silent statues. “Oh, and let me introduce Sean and David. They are two of my best warriors. I will have them stationed outside the hall, ready and waiting, just in case anything goes wrong tonight.”
“What do you mean if anything goes wrong?” I replied while glancing at the warriors curiously.
“Well, you know you have to be out of there at half 11 tonight,” Jace explained. “Plus, our little mission of getting rid of that human. If he doesn’t let you go or at least leave, then you will end up turning into a wolf, no matter what. If you are stuck in that hall, with no escape and you turn, our secret will be out.”
“Oh. Right. I see,” I nodded in agreement. “I don’t think it will be a good thing if 200 plus students see me morphing into a fully grown wolf.”
“No. If they did, it would mean one hell of a job to retain our secret,” agreed Jace thoughtfully. “And I don’t think 200 students meeting the largest and strongest wolf pack is a good thing. I think people will notice 200 kids missing, especially when the bodies start turning up!”
I gulped nervously at the thought of all my friend’s bodies, scattered around the prom hall lifelessly, covered in blood and with many gruesome injuries. I had recently found out that wolves weren’t exactly renowned for making their kills quick and clean. I had read a book that my Mum had given me about a war that happened with the humans hundreds of years ago and all the humans had limbs torn off, large chunks of flesh missing from their bodies and some had been entirely decapitated. Even though that war was very much real in our world, the humans had seemed to have forgotten and now saw it as a tale, a story, or a fable, as you will. Truth was that a witch had put a spell on the humans to make them forget. If she hadn’t, then all the humans would have had to been wiped out as the news of the attack spread fast and hysteria had begun to settle. Pushing those thoughts out of my mind, I looked up at Jace and smiled broadly.
“I don’t want to think about that. Can we go. I will be late otherwise?”
“Of course,” He smiled. “Say goodbye to your parents. I’ll wait for you in the car,” before he turned around and disappeared back inside the Limo, while his warriors climbed into the front.
Turning to my parents, who were silently watching on, I grinned and hugged them both tightly.
“Thank you for this. Don’t worry about a thing,” I whispered. “I’ve got this okay! I will see you later!”
My parents nodded in silent unison before watching me climb into the limo beside Jace and wind down the window. Dad came up to the car and peered in before planting a kiss on my forehand.
“Rosalie?” he murmured quietly before looking at me dead in the eye.
“Yes Dad?” I replied softly, beginning to feel a little worried at his tone. “What now?”
“Stay safe!”
