Chapter 14
*Kassandra’s Pov*
It was much later and the boys had left, Xander had left instantly as he was soaking, but there was way more to it, his eyes had held something, but I wasn’t sure what.
The rest of the boys stayed to help us finish off and eat but I couldn’t just ignore the fact that Xander was all that was on my mind. Once they had left and Liana and Joana also went with Austin, Savannah took the chance to pounce on me.
"Spill."
"What?" I raised my eyebrows, cluelessly.
"You and King Fuckboy. What was that?"
"What was what?" I had no idea what she meant; we did not make anything obvious!
"Oh bitch, do not give me that shit." She almost growled.
If Savi was a werewolf, I'm sure she’d be an Alpha.
"It’s nothing, I mean, why would you even think that. He is not my type." He is totally my type. When it came to looks and making me tick, he had it sealed.
"But there’s something there." She probed. "You don’t really hide things from me. If you’re hiding something, it means you know it's not right."
Way to make me feel bad, I hadn't even told her about my other job. Oh if she found out I am dead meat.
"Maybe he’s taken an interest in me." I twirled a strand of my hair around my finger. "And maybe I kind of agreed to a date."
I couldn’t tell her that it was more of a one-night stand than a date.
"A date?! Xander Aldino doesn’t do dates babe, he fucks, he’s luring you so he can get between those legs, and you will willingly fall into his trap!"
I already have and typical Savi for picking up on Xander’s antics.
"Babe! What about Nick? He’s cute and decent."
"But doesn’t a girl like a bad boy?" I mused, chewing on my bottom lip.
Savannah groaned, gathering up the takeout cartons.
"Babe you are scaring me. Like for fucking real you can’t be serious?" She said, taking my face in her hands and making me look at her.
"I won't fall for him, it's just a little chemistry."
"A little? The way you two looked at each other when he left, girl, that intensity was fucking strong. Be glad I distracted Austin."
I looked at her in surprise.
Wait, you did that so he..." The words faded from my lips, and I smiled, flinging my arms around her neck. "You love me! even if I'm making a bad decision."
"Yeah, I do, and I’ll be there to skin his sausage, if he so much as makes you cry, babe."
"I won’t let him do that. I'm not getting attached, this is just one date."
"One date, you mean… Holy Mother!" Her mouth fell open and I sat back.
"Hold up babe, listen, it’s just one night." I blushed as I sat there on my knees.
"Oh, my tits! WHAT!!!!"
Ten minutes later, I had totally clued her in on every little deet and she was sitting there, gobsmacked.
"So, you two have kissed... You’ve kissed the walking STD machine! AND YOU AGREED TO LET HIM FUCK YOU?!"
Okay… maybe he was a playboy, but as a werewolf, I'm sure he wasn’t carrying any diseases, didn’t they like heal? Was I defending him when I’ve said the very same thing about him? What was the matter with me?
"And… tomorrow night… he uh, he’s taking me out on a date first, dinner he said." I finished.
"An actual date?"
"Yeah."
She let out a whistle, "Be careful babe because there’s got to be more to it. Either he’s crushing on you for real, or it’s a bet."
My stomach sank at her words.
It was definitely not a crush, but it wasn’t a bet, right?
I was one of the most sought after girls through high school, was this really just a game to him? It hadn't crossed my mind... Should I do this?
"Maybe I'm wrong, but I want you to be careful babe."
I nodded. I will be.
Savannah had headed home, and I ended up sleeping at my new place, waking up to a dozen messages from Dad about how I had betrayed him by moving out already and I didn’t even say goodbye and I should have stayed till New Year at least. The texts went on, but I didn’t bother reading the rest, instead texting Austin to meet me at mine and to bring breakfast because I needed to tell him something.
I needed to tell him about me being a hunter before he found out at the meeting and all hell broke loose.
Austin had shown up an hour later, with bagels, croissants, and hot drinks, and we were seated at the kitchen counter looking at each other.
"So, there’s something I need to fill you in on." I said, dipping my croissant into my drink, making Austin scrunch his nose in disgust.
"That isn’t tea,"
"I know."
"Alright, so what did you wanna talk about?"
I sighed. Here goes fuck all.
"I know what you are… I know you’re a hunter, and so is Xander, although he’s a werewolf. I know that vampires exist, rogues, demons." I said my eyes stuck on him, gauging his reaction.
His eyes widened slightly, but it was obvious he had no clue as to how to reply.
"How?" He asked after a moment, "I mean, how the hell do you know about vampires and demons?"
"Let’s say I ran into a few in NYC, and I even dated a vampire," I said, making Austin look up sharply. "Dude chill this is years ago, and I didn’t know he was one at the time…"
"Where is he now? Tell me he is dead, because if he isn’t, he will probably still be in love with you. They’re very possessive and obsessive." His concern shone through, and although I was expecting him to be angry, his concern was far more worrying.
"Forget that, he’s in the past, I’ve not seen him again. What I'm telling you is, I know what you are because… I’m one too, a hunter. The new hunter who joined New Orleans base, that’s me."
Austin looked at me, completely shocked,
"What! You mean- do you know how dangerous this is?!" He whispered, glancing around leaning forward, I think he forgot that we were in my apartment, alone.
"I do! And I became one to protect myself above all" I hissed back, "So stop stressing! I’ve been paired with someone recently, and they told me I should tell you!"
"Xander, I heard Sandra was an exceptional hunter and everyone at work said Ryder was finally getting assigned a partner, Kas you need to stop this you don’t need to do this, not anymore, look you could be killed," Austin said with desperation, worry and fear clear in his eyes.
"I didn’t tell you for you to tell me to stop! I told you this because Xander said you should know, and otherwise, I wouldn’t have told you! So do not tell me that I need to stop!"
"Look, it's dangerous, you could get hurt or killed. Kassandra, come on… Maybe I should get them to make us partners. At least I can take care of you." He said, running a hand through his hair, "Xander’s fucking strong but he’s a werewolf, you need-"
"Stop it! You’re stressing me out!"
"I'm not! I'm just saying-" He stopped placing his head in his hands for a second, then sighed "Fine! I won’t say anything, but won’t you reconsider?"
"No, I’ve been doing this for a while…"
"I thought you told me everything…" he said quietly,
"Apart from this and the vampire dude, you do know everything… I mean, I did tell you about that guy I met? You were the only one who even knew I liked a guy…. But I said it didn’t go far remember? It was him."
"Yeah well, no more secrets okay," He said frowning.
"This was the biggest secret I could possibly have had, so I don’t think I can surprise you anymore." I smiled, hoping he felt a little better.
"So this must be why you and Xander seem to be a little… tense last night."
Shit, thank god he was putting it down to that
"Yeah if you wanna call it that… He just wanted me to tell you." I said giving him a pointed look, picking up my drink cup.
He looked at me and nodded.
"At least he had that much fucking sense, I need to thank him. I know you’re probably a great hunter. You have always been fearless and headstrong. Some day, let's go on a hunt together."
I looked at him, surprised.
"Sure one day we should"
"As for dad.... don’t tell him he won’t take it well, it’s the only reason he doesn’t think Joana could become the next mayor. Because as a mayor, he needs to ensure that the people are safe from vampire’s but he doesn’t think she could handle it" Austin said sighing.
"I think she would be able to. Men can’t protect us women for the rest of our lives."
Yeah, well, if he knew you were a hunter, it might open his eyes a little that you guys aren’t just princesses to be pampered... and maybe he’ll get off my back, but now is not the time to break that news to him."
"Someday…"
"I’m impressed that Xander hasn’t asked to remove you as his partner. He’s never accepted a partner until this date." he said finishing off his drink.
"I guess out of respect for you, maybe he’s giving me a chance," I said smoothly.
"Xander is cool, but he isn’t one to do stuff out of respect…" Austin said, thoughtfully watching me. "I don’t want to see you get hurt, so I'm just saying… don’t get too close to him, because you’re both from two very different worlds… you know what I mean."
His eyes squarely looking into mine. I felt something twist inside, he was right...
"You’re right I get that," I replied as casually and as unbothered as possible, I knew Austin was watching me. He nodded, giving me a small smile, and I returned it with one of my own. He watched me silently, observing me.
Austin wasn’t dumb, he was a smart young man, and I knew I had to be careful. It didn’t matter though, after our date tonight, we would be nothing more than just work partners.
