Chapter 14

I hadn't seen Simon in a long time.
The next time I heard news about him, it was actually on the news.
Cecilia's days became difficult as her family pressured her to marry Simon.
Simon refused that and became frustrated, so he went out for a drive to clear his mind.
As a result, the brakes failed on a mountain road and he drove off the cliff.
When he was rescued, he was covered in blood and in a deep coma.
After an investigation, the police ultimately found evidence pointing to Cecilia.
She admitted it.
"Yes, it was me. He was the one who provoked me first. Why should I be abandoned for a poor imitation?"
The once-celebrated actress had fallen into misery, completely losing control, "I'm not doing well, and he won't escape easily either."
Some of Simon's friends came looking for me, wanting me to visit him in the hospital.
I firmly refused, saying, "I think there's no need for that, right?"
He glared at me angrily, "Do you know what Simon did for you?"
"Yes, I do."
I smiled and said, "Was it bringing me to your party to let you all get me drunk and make fun of me, or was it releasing edited photos of Cecilia to tarnish my reputation as a promiscuous woman?"
His face changed dramatically, speechless.
After many ups and downs, the experimental project finally produced successful results.
During the press conference to announce the achievements, Simon remained unconscious in the hospital.
After it was over, I went to the cemetery again.
My grandmother was still on the tombstone, smiling kindly, looking at me.
I exhaled and watched the white mist dissipate in the cold air.
Actually, at the end of my grandmother's life, she once held Simon's hand and asked him to be good to me.
She said, "I know Diana asked you for a loan of three-hundred-thousand dollars because of my illness, it's my fault. Don't blame her, she's really had a hard time, she's suffered a lot over the years..."
Her thin and wrinkled hand, due to her effort, was filled with veins.
She struggled to speak, "Be good to her."
Simon remained silent for a while before uttering a single word, "Okay."
Finally, my grandmother was able to pass away peacefully.
I pressed my face against her lifeless body, barely able to produce a sound, just sobbing uncontrollably.
Accidentally, when I looked up, I saw Simon frowning as he used a disinfectant wipe on his hands.
He had always looked down on me, as well as the poor struggling to survive in this world.
But now, it's his turn.
"My research results have gradually been put into use, and soon I will be involved in the next project."
"Perhaps in many years to come, I will be a renowned biologist, leaving my name in history. By then, you will surely be happy for me, won't you?"
I leaned against my grandmother's gravestone and talked a lot, and I continued until the sky turned completely dark and I stood up to leave.
Iris was waiting at the door.
She specifically arranged for a black car to pick me up.
Once inside the car, my frozen body slowly regained sensation.
She asked me, "Now that Simon is lying in the hospital and he doesn't matter to you anymore, do you want to change your name back?"
I thought for a moment and replied, "Sure."
Diana was the name my grandmother gave me.
I still hope that perhaps in the future, when my name is written in the history books, it will be under that name.
On this night, the sky was cloudless and the moon shone brightly.
The shadows of trees flickered past the car window, along with the glow of streetlights.
Finally, I found myself once again walking on the path of my long-cherished dream.
This time, I will never stop.
