Inquisition

I belted a short deranged laugh. Yeah, I was leaning more towards the hallucination option. Who would believe that the voice in my head belonged to someone else. It was happening to me and I could scarcely believe myself. Maybe…..

“Kiera!” I whirled around and tried to locate the voice amongst all the moving bodies.

Oh, yeah. School was over for the day and I was in the school parking lot waiting for my mum to come pick me. Every other student was hopping into their car and driving away, just like Mrs’ Crook had said. Only very few students were entering their friend’s cars.

“Kiera!” The familiar voice yelled again. I turned in a circle, trying to locate Sarah.

A white Mercedes honked and flashed its lights about three foot away. Guess I had my answer. I jogged over and found Sarah in the passenger seat and mystery girl behind the wheels.

“Hi.”

“Hey you. Are you on your way home?” Sarah poked her head out and waved at someone before turning enquiring eyes at me.

“Yeah.”

“Do you mind if we give you a ride home?”

“You don’t even know where she lives or if it’s on our way.” Mystery girl protested indignantly.

“Oh hush Tara. I’m sure it can be too far out of our way. Isn’t that right Kiera? Oh right, you are not familiar with the town yet.” I didn’t get a word in edgewise and I didn’t bother. It took all my strength to twist my facial muscles into a smile and stay focused on my surroundings.

“You really think so?” Tara slanted Sarah a look before turning to me. “Where do you live, Kiera?”

“The house on baker street.” Tara raised her brow before releasing a low whistle. “Nana Brooke's house? That house hasn't been lived in since……forever! I don’t

think anyone has lived in that house ever since I've been alive!”

“I thought you said you didn't know who Nana Brooke was.” Blue eyes laser focused on me with a frightening intensity.

“That's because I don't! The house was an empty shell when we found it and that's why we moved in. It was the cheapest on the list. I wasn’t aware of any history or anything like that.” I rumbled defensively. Honestly, I was damn tired of this day. I just wished it would be over already.

“It’s okay Kiera. I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm just a bit surprised you didn't know the history of the previous owner is all.”  She stressed.

“You told me she lived there hundreds of years ago, how can she be the previous owner?”

“Because no one has lived in the house for long. Some say it's cursed. Others say the spirit of Nana Brooke doesn’t like strangers in her house.” She concluded with a shrug.

“Didn’t the estate agent warn you about the house before you bought it?”

I frowned at them. This was slowly starting to feel like an inquisition. And I don’t like inquisitions. “Only that it was a money pit, owing to the number of renovations we will need to make on it. Okay, I will see you guys tomorrow.” I turned to leave.

“Are you sure we can’t give you a ride Kiera?”

“Yes, I'm sure. My mum is on her way here and I don't want her to think I’ve been kidnapped or something.” Lord  knows what effect that will have on her health.

“Aiit. See you tomorrow. And don't forget about the phone!” Sarah yelled as Tara drove her very nice, very shiny Mercedes Benz past me.

Thankfully, I only had to wait like a loser in the lot for five more minutes before mum’s honda civic turned into the school’s driveway. I ran over and jumped into the car before she could turn off the ignition.
