Blessed Grounds

[A/N: Hey there dear reader! I hope you are enjoying the book so far.

So, a little spoiler. Kiera is being possesed by Kyros, the god of thunder. Who is Kyros, what does he want and why has he chosen Kiera as his target? All of your questions will be answered in due time.

I just wanted to tell you that Llanwytrd is Kyros' home and he is stronger here. This means his thoughts come out more strongly. Kyros' thoughts are written in italics while Kiera's are written normally.]

KYROS' POV

Free. I am finally free of the wretched bonds that tied me down and kept me weak.

Everything had been fine and dandy as my host and her pathetic excuse of a mother drove to school, and then……nothing. I was left rudderless without knowing why.

It was the worst feeling I have ever felt. It was similar to the unfortunate moment Elsie and her cronies had been lucky enough to find a way to banish me from my home.

All the control I've been gaining over Kiera’s mind, inch by slow inch ever since she had been growing, all of it, broken like a twig snapped in half. And without any prior notice. Why? I had no idea why. I only know that she could never go back to that place. It was not simpolythe loss of control that annoyed me, it was the way I had been trapped. Ever since I had been residing in Kiera’s body, I had been aware of her every thought and actions even if I didn’t control them. But when that tin can humans called a car passed the oak tree, I became blind, deaf and dumb. I had no voice nor could I see or hear.

I shuddered even as I shook my head. No, Kiera could never be allowed to go back to school.

School? That infernal place was anything but a school.

I was invulnerable to every magic the weak humans could conjure up. Only one thing could have trapped me the way I was the second my host stepped foot on those grounds. That place being masqueraded as a school was blessed grounds.

The question still remained, how? No blessed ground had been in existence when my brothers and I reigned supreme, so who had done it? I searched my extensive memory to find a solution to my quadrum. I knew every inch of the towns like I knew each and every single feather on my wings. The holy ground now being used as a school had been nothing but acres upon acres of ruin. It used to belong to the Whitfield family but everyone in that family was a basket case and…….

The wail of a baby intruded on my thoughts and crashed the precious memory I had been trying to revive. I glanced up sharply and located a brown skinned human putting a miniature version of herself into another of those tin cans. They were weak, easily disposable and now intruders. If I didn’t need to feed upon their fears, I would have made them all extinct. But this particular nonentity needed to be taught a lesson.

I flung my arms to the side and watched dispassionately as the large oak tree next to her fell over and almost crushed her as it toppled onto her car. She shrieked as she scrambled back to safety, leaving the baby in the car -and at the mercy of the tree that just smashed her windshield and dented the roof of the tin can. The resulting crash bursted one of the tires. Other annoying humans such herself wailed in alarm and rushed over to help. She kept screaming over and over for her child but didn’t even move closer to the tin can. The doors were all dented and bent but I could feel the faint heartbeat of the child. It was safe in the back while she screamed her lungs out for no good reason.

I sniffed in disdain and walked on, her fear and terror failing to please me as it usually did.

The bustling landscape filled with the annoying humans changed. The scattered brown leaves turned into lush green grass. I followed a well remembered path, this time though, my brothers are not flowing in the sky and the air is not fetid with the pure terror of the weak mortals. Oh, to be back in power. But I cannot return to power, not at the moment. My control over her body is tenuous. A single wind blows and I’m banished into the deepest recesses of her mind.

She was as willful as her great grandmother and just as mule headed. Her spirit was not one that would go down without a fight. Even now, I could feel her trying to regain control. If she didn’t lose her temper so often, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to control her actions. Her mind was a different story altogether, but take total control I will.

This body belongs to me and I will not be banished from it.

Raising my face to the sky, I breathed in the earthy smell after a rain. It cleansed the faint irritation buzzing beneath my skin and centered my thoughts a little. I eyed the forest critically and tried to reconcile the small bush that housed a cave in its depths that I claimed as my abode to this sprawling monstrosity of a forest.

A big silver sign hanging between two metal rods proclaimed it as the Emslow protected grounds. All trespassers were being warned off on the threat of being sued. I laughed lightly. Silly humans turned my home into a protected forest? But to what end?

I could see the orange and purple swirls, even a few silver, indicating that the humans -witches I believe blessed humans such as Elsie and her cronies were called- had erected defensive wards here to stop anyone from entering the grounds. I swatted at the wards and the magic keeping it in place all scattered. I shook my head at their antics. They really didn’t believe their spells could hold me, did they? Didn't they learn anything from Elsie? She was the strongest of their kind and even she was no match for me.

I smelt him half a second before I heard his low growl. Having a physical shape must be distorting my reflexes. Ordinarily, every miniscule element in this forest shouldn’t have breathed without me knowing about it, but here I was, being blindsided by the menacing growl of a yet to be seen mutt. The limitations of my host’s body was making itself known in the worst way. She couldn’t see very well past a few meters and she was slow, very slow. Must be as a result of being fat and having never exercised in her entire life.

The wannabe predator prowled into the clearing I was standing in and that was when I got my first view of it. Wolf. it was as balck as night, not a hint of color on it anywhere else, well except for its eyes. It had an oddly mesmerizing stormy grey eyes that tried to bore a hole into me. It sniffed the air before cocking its head at me. Those eyes reflected its confusion, almost like it was trying to figure me out. This was no ordinary wolf but a werewolf. Another of those blessed humans, but instead of wielding a fraction of magic, they turned into furry beasts. Actually, I doubted blessed is what I call a human that turns into a dog and is a slave to the moon and the desires of the animal in him.

“Leave me mutt. I am not in the mood to be trifled with.”

The foolish mutt didn’t heed my warning. It prowled toward me, its tail high in the sky. I turned in a half circle to keep it in my sight but then tripped over a stone I failed to notice.

“Damn this wretched body!” I cursed as I sat undignified on the ground. Humans were weaklings, yes, but this stupid girl was unpardonably weaker trhan the rest of them.

I was fully awake now and I refuse to tolerate such weakness from her. A low growl returned my attention to the silly mutt -that still hadn’t taken off to save his hide- and I found it much closer to me. It was circling me now and sniffing the air with more urgency. Foolish mutt probably found me delicious. Its tongue snicked out and licked my face even as its enormous fangs elongated. It was bearing down to chomp down on me. I was not wolf chow.

I opened my mouth and howled back in its face, the shock of the fire erupting from my mouth throwing the mutt on its side.

I bent into a crouch as I hacked out, my body too weak to sustain my power. Training. I had to train this foolish girl, I thought irritatedly as I coughed and my eyes watered.
