Chapter 10
Unknown POV continued
They must have been hurting her; he didn't know how. His brother said she wouldn't talk about it, only that it took three days before he stopped smelling fresh blood on her. The thought of what they could have been doing to her made him sick to his stomach.
Every now and then, his brother would text him to let him know they had hurt her again. It wasn't that she told him; she didn't. But he could tell when she had been hurt and could smell the blood. Her trainers were better able to inform him of the type of abuse she was enduring. His brother mentioned that her healing abilities had accelerated. He wondered if she had found a mate.
She was eighteen now, and for some reason, the idea of her with another wolf didn't sit well with him. Perhaps he had become possessive over the years. He had felt a need to protect and care for this she-wolf since he first met her. Her sister made her high school life a living hell. His brother had informed him of every false rumor spread about her.
He told him about the one girl who had stood up for her against her sister once, and the consequences of doing so. Her sister had effectively isolated her, making him grateful that his brother had been by her side, even if he was still a little jealous. His phone dinged with a message. It was from Darien.
"Something bad happened today to Alora," the message read. His heart stopped for a moment in fear for the she-wolf who had been through far too much.
"What happened?" he asked.
"She found her mate today... but..." Darien replied.
"But what?" he inquired.
"It was Matthew, Sarah's boyfriend. He rejected her on the front lawn at the school, and she rejected him back instead of just accepting it. She sent the repercussions back at Matt, and he collapsed on the lawn. Then that witch Sarah started slapping her repeatedly, shouting nonsense at her. One of my mate's brothers stepped in and threw Sarah away from her after the fourth slap," Darien explained.
"What the heck!? How is she reacting to all this?" he asked.
"Well, bro, it's not good. She said she's finally reached her limit. That was her last straw. She said she will not hold back anymore," Darien replied. "They deserve her wrath."
"Congratulations on meeting your mate," he responded. "I'm happy he’s met his mate."
"Thanks, Serenity is amazing. I wish you could have been Alora's mate. Matt didn't deserve her," Darien replied.
"Your Senior class should be having your training Finals today," he sent.
"Yeah, you should see the picture they have of her and her wolf Xena," Darien told him.
He sent him the picture they had made of Alora and her wolf Xena. He opened it and instantly felt a punch to his gut; all the air left his chest. She had grown to be utterly magnificent. Tall, with well-defined muscles that perfectly matched her amazingly curvy body.
Her look was fierce, her eyes glittering like purple diamonds. Her long, shiny black hair was pulled back in a high tail, showcasing her gorgeous olive-toned skin. She always smelled of hot caramel, apple, and cinnamon to him. He looked at Xena, who was just as fierce and magnificent, her luminescent white fur glowing, her few black markings outlining her ears, and her tail looking like the tip had been dipped in black.
Then there was the mark on her hip, a blessing from the Goddess, a crescent moon and a star. Her face was pulled into a snarl, displaying all her long, sharp, and shiny fangs.
He had kept an eye on and taken care of this she-wolf through progress reports his father passed to him and updates his brother sent him. He didn't know why he felt compelled to do this; his wolf Zane was also protective of her ever since they found that abused pup at his favorite thinking spot.
He shuddered to think what could have happened if he hadn't been there that day. He was also grateful that her Goddess-blessed mark didn't show up until after her first shift, long after her parents stopped really seeing her. They would have used her for their own ends, never letting her go, never allowing people near her enough to see the abuse she suffered.
He had begun watching the little she-wolf, telling his brother to be kind to her. At first, his brother didn't understand why, but as he got to know her, he formed a friendship with her, and they became best friends. He knew he was her confidant and defender, as much as she allowed. She was as independent as she could be in her current environment, likely trying to protect others around her from harm. One day, he saw how brilliant she was and decided that education was how they would free her from her family.
But her family held her back, offering reasonable explanations for not wanting her to advance in school as fast as she could. He knew the real reasons; they didn't want her to outshine their perfect Ice Princess. So, he and his father came up with a plan: she would advance in high school and only attend training and all AP classes, of which she had only two.
They were just English and history; then she would be bussed to the University to attend the rest of her classes. She accelerated her learning there, a genius with a photographic memory who could retain everything she read and learned. She had already passed her finals and completed the required internship hours for her doctorates.
They had only intervened to secure her the internship at the lab where she had worked for the past three years. Due to her age, she would have been turned away from any human-owned lab, but they had their own labs with advanced technology. She had proven herself to the lab and secured a position as a lead Doctor and head of her own research team as soon as everything was finalized.
She just needed to finish her exams; her test results in each exam would be immediately reviewed, graded, and submitted after each exam. Her diploma would be issued and signed the moment her last results were submitted. He didn't want her to have to be near those people for a second longer than necessary.
They had also found a way to help her gain freedom from her family. She bore a striking resemblance to the First Alpha, prompting her to have her DNA tested and matched to her parents. The Alpha had the test done, comparing it to her parents and the Heartsongs, and to their delight, she was indeed a descendant. The last Heartsong had married a Mountainmover, with one son and one daughter.
The son resembled his father, pale with blond hair and his mother's blue eyes, while the daughter had dark skin, blond hair, and violet eyes. The daughter and her parents perished in a landslide, and the son married into the Frost line, with Bettina being his daughter. Both he and his mate died in a car accident when a semi-truck lost control, leaving Bettina orphaned and adopted into a traditional Frost family, drastically altering her from the woman she should have been.
After this investigation, his father suggested that she change her name when she turned 18. To their surprise, she had already planned to do so. The name she chose was fitting and allowed, as she was indeed a descendant. She was reborn as Alora Luna Heartsong and blood-sworn into the pack by the Alpha with that name. All her school reports and paperwork were immediately updated to match.
For added protection, he arranged for her to move into the pack house as soon as she graduated. He had her suite of rooms prepared next to his, ready and waiting, just in case she had to move early. And it was looking like she might.
There was a knock on the bedroom door, and he knew who it was before they entered the study. With black hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, it was Xander Frost Stonemaker, his chosen Beta and Matt's older brother.
"What’s up, Damien?" Xander asked.
"Your brother is a fool," he replied.
A resigned look crossed Xander's face. "What did the idiot do now?" he growled slightly.
"He rejected his mate in front of the school for Sarah," he explained. First shocked, then indignant, and finally angry, Xander responded, "That IDIOT! What the hell was he thinking? Do you know who he rejected?"
Picking up his phone, he showed Xander the picture his brother had just sent him of Alora and Xena. Xander's jaw dropped. "The fool gave up that stunning she-wolf for the century's slut," he said in disbelief.
"How, I mean, she's incredibly attractive. What was he thinking, and she's a goddess-blessed wolf too," Xander said, looking at the picture with confusion. "Wait... is that... that’s Alora!"
He simply nodded. "Oh, he's going to regret his decision, and I won’t feel sorry for him at all," Xander growled.
Looking at him, Xander asked, "What's got you worried?"
Glancing back at her picture, he took a moment before looking back at Xander and saying, "Your brother rejecting her and her sister attacking her for rejecting him back has pushed her to her limit. My brother told me that she's reached her limit."
Confusion crossed Xander's face. "What does that mean now?"
"It means... she's no longer going to hold back," he stated.
Understanding dawned in Xander's eyes. "Oh, shit." And that summed up his thoughts perfectly.
