35: Lady Elizabeth Jane's POV

My uncle had dismissed everyone from the throne room but me. I had settled into my chair while that simpering idiot Ada had nearly fallen apart in front of all of us. With every passing rule and word of my uncle, I’d felt my smile growing. He’d promised me I’d be the one that won in the end. Maybe I hadn’t actually believed him before this meeting, but I certainly did now. She would have *nothing. * *No one.* I’d have Darius and the crown and the future heir of a Kingdom. Surely Ada would fail and I’d end up having to step in and provide a blood heir, which would be even better.

It wasn’t until the three Alpha Princes footsteps had faded into the distance that Uncle Everett spoke, “Elizabeth,” he swallowed when I turned and smiled languidly at him. I lowered my chin and looked up at him through my eyelashes, fluttering them slightly. My chest, plump from my tight corset, heaved with every breath. His eyes raked up and down my body, sending a jolt of heat between my legs. The next time he spoke, it was a broken whisper, “*Elizabeth.*”

“Yes, uncle?” I brought a hand to my chest and traced circles on the top of my breast with my forefinger.

“Seek out your betrothed,” he hissed through gritted teeth, his gaze locked on my breasts, “Begin courting him immediately.”

I climbed to my feet and curtsied with a flourish of my sweeping skirts, “As you wish, *my* King.”

The growl that erupted from him was near-feral. My eyes were wide with feigned innocence as they met his. They flashed an opulent white then narrowed, “You will act as my spy. I will require nightly reports,” his Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed, “in my quarters,” his eyes flickered down to my chest once more, “Make sure Ada is following the rules. If she is not, report back to me. Do *not* interfere. She is not to be touched or harmed, Elizabeth,” my uncle sighed, rubbing his temples and closing his eyes, “Do I make myself clear?”

“Crystal,” I stood up straight, my lips tilted upward.

His eyes, full of fire that was visible even from a distance, scoured my body once more. He waved his long-fingered hand in dismissal. As I turned and left the throne room, my center longed to know the feeling of those fingers stroking deep, teasing. But I’d settle for his son. I would find Darius and begin our destined courtship as ordered. He would love me before the end of this.

And despite my uncles orders, he’d given me the perfect opportunity to take Ada out of the way for good.
