The cars avoided the streets that Spencer had told them Zane’s father and his group had eyes on. Once Zane and his men made their move against his father, several smaller groups would clear out the rest of the groups that were still waiting to catch them in ambushes. If they hit the smaller groups before the larger one in the office building, they risked tipping Zane’s father off that they were coming. Zane didn’t want to take the chance. He would make sure they got his father this time, and that everyone of his men that knew about the baby would die before the end of the day. They were taking full advantage of having Zane, Jax and Ryder taking part in the raid. They split up in three groups and made their way inside the deserted office building. The aim was to keep Zane’s father and his closest men in the blind for as long as possible. It lowered the chances of them making a run for it. Zane had switched out his gun for a knife as he moved in between empty cubicles. It was quieter if used correctly and in this maze it was unlikely he would be spotted on a distance that would give a gun the advantage. If he needed it he was carrying three guns, extra ammunition and a couple of spare knives. The team he was leading encountered two men and they made short work of dealing with them as silent as they could. Zane could see the final door that led to the office where his father was according to Spencer. They would take them off guard and satisfaction filled Zane. Several gun shots rang out from somewhere to the right of him. Zane cursed, switched his knife for a gun and stood up. The element of surprise was gone. His men followed suit and they made their way to the inner office. They took cover at the door and bullets started flying. His father and his men had turned over some desks and were taking cover behind them. From a door to Zanes left, Ryder and his team took up post and lastly Jax’s group came through a door to his right. Jax was clutching his upper arm that was bleeding. It didn’t look to be life threatening. Zane focused back on his father. Jax, Ryder and him had worked together long enough to know what to do and how to keep out of each others way. They needed to round up quick. The longer this went on, the greater the risk of serious injuries to their men and the bigger the risk that someone heard the gunshots and called the police. Zane did not want to be here when the police arrived. Zane’s men were younger and hadn’t spent years in retirement, their reflexes were on point and their aim was true. They also had the advantage of being split up in three groups and could adapt to different angles. Soon Zane aimed his gun at Bo and his bullet hit the man between his eyes. It was the last of his father’s men last standing. Jax distracted his father for a second. It was enough for Zane to cover the distance and place his gun against the back of his father’s head.
“Put your gun down,” he growled at his father. His father dropped his gun and slowly stood up and twisted around until he was facing Zane.
“I didn’t think you had it in you,” Amon told Zane.
“Fuck you, father. You made sure I had it in me. Now shut up and do as I tell you and you might keep some dignity,” Zane said. His father scoffed.
“You think you have won. You’re a cocky fucker, always was. One of your better traits. You don’t know shit. My end goal is so far beyond your comprehension it’s almost funny.” Zane leaned into his father, close enough to be able to whisper in his ear.
“If you are talking about that bastard that you have managed to sire, I know all about them. And before the sun sets they will be in my hands. Game over, father,” he whispered. Amon’s eyes grew big and for the first time in years, Zane could see genuine fear in them. Last time it had filled him with fear as well. This time he enjoyed it. It signalled his victory. Spencer came walking from where ever he had been hiding.
“Boss,” he greeted Zane as Ryder cuffed Amon.
“I need you to find the item. Retrieval only, gently,” Zane told Spencer.
“Will do,” Spencer said, turned around and disappeared again. Zane knew he would be irritated as it would be the second mission in a row that meant he needed to restrain himself. Zane would make sure the next mission would be more fun for him.
“Going to Ava’s office?” Jax asked.
“No. I’m going to make sure dear old dad gets home this time,” Zane said. “You are joining me and having the doctor looking at your arm,” he added.
“I was thinking I would go to Linda. If she sees me hurt, she might take pity on me,” Jax told him. Zane shook his head.
“Go,” he told his friend and turned to Ryder. “You can go to Ava’s office if you like, but you can’t open the door until I get there,” Zane told him. Ryder shrugged.
“I’ll go with you, boss,” he said to Zane. Zane nodded and they headed out. Amon sat in silence in the car, looking out of the window.
“You can forget about being rescued by the stray teams you have set up. They are being dealt with right now,” Zane told him. Amon didn’t say a word, but Zane could see the anger in his eyes and knew he had been counting on one or several of the groups coming to his aid. As they drove to the gates of the mansion, there was no trace of what had taken place just an couple of hours before. When Zane’s father was led down into the basement, Zane relaxed a little. He and Ryder handed out strict orders as to who could go down into the basement. Zane made sure everything was under control and then took a look to see that the library had been arranged back to it’s original state.
“I guess we should get going,” Zane told Ryder.
“Right. No point putting it off,” he agreed.
“True, true. They will only get more upset the longer we wait,” Zane said. Neither of them were moving.
“Master Velky, did you bring Mrs Ava?” Anna asked as she walked into the library.
“No, not yet,” he admitted.
“Well, hurry up. It’s dinner time and she should not skip meals. It’s plenty safe here now,” she said.
“We were just on our way,” he told her. Then the three of them stood watching each other in silence for a while.
“She isn’t hiding under the rug I take it?” Anna remarked.
“Right, going. Thank you, Anna,” Zane said and started walking to the cars. He could hear Ryder limping behind him, he whispered ‘grovel’ over and over again to himself. How could they be so scared to go and see their partners after taking on his fathers men during the day? “This is going to suck,” he said out loud as they got into the car.
“I agree. Still, I miss him like crazy,” Ryder admitted. Zane felt a pain in the vicinity of his heart. He was desperate for his angel.
“Yeah, it’s messed up,” he said to Ryder. Ryder grunted in reply. “I’m expecting this car to be at my wife’s office withing fifteen minutes or there will be one more body to add to the count today,” Zane told the driver.
“Yes, Boss,” the driver said and floored it. Ryder chuckled in the seat next to Zane.
“I have not gone soft,” Zane told him.
“I didn’t say anything. Fuck, I’m just as bad so I can’t say anything,” Ryder said.
