37. Bad boys brother

The sound of the radio filled the silence in the car. I couldn't bear to even meet Kay's eyes as she kept her eyes shifting in my direction. From the look on her face, it was clear that she wanted to ask me something. Probably about my conversation with Damon back there. As much as I wanted to scream and yell about it I was holding back.

Kay cleared her throat loudly which made me shift in my seat. I peeked in her direction only to see that she was already sneaking glances at me. A huff left my breath and I slumped in my seat.

"So..."

My lips twitched at her drawl. Of course, it started. She has always been that way, keen on knowing everything and it was shocking that she managed to bite back for so long. Staring at the window my shoulders brushed against the glass. The trees passed by and we were entering deeper into the forest.

"Hmm," I hummed, still not looking at her. From the corner of my eyes, I could notice her shoulders slump down in defeat. Well, who said I was going to make easy for her?

"So are we going to talk about it?" Kay questioned, her fingers drumming against the steering wheel.

I blinked my lashes innocently, "Talk about what?"

Kay let out a breath, "Are you serious? You know what I want to know"

Coyly I raised my eyebrows in her direction, "Do I?"

"Anya!" She whined, pushing at my arm. Unable to hold back my laughter I covered my mouth and looked away. Sometimes it's funny to see how Kay gets when she doesn't get whatever she wants. The first time I found out about her tantrums was when we became friends and it was kind of funny. She was embarrassed about it and kept apologizing the next day.

"I don't know how to talk to you" I admitted, my face flaming red just thinking about it. It had to be my most humiliating moment because no one has made me feel so small.

"You know that you can tell me anything right?"

I sighed, "Yeah"

"It didn't work out its alright. We can think of a new plan I'm sure. Maybe something little less risky this time" Kay shrugged, giving me a bright smile. Usually, that does the trick but I was too occupied with different thoughts to think about anything else. Besides after that, it would be stupid of me to continue investigating.

"We are done, Kay"

Her eyebrows narrowed at that, "Huh? Done?"

I crossed my arms against my chest, staring at the glass in front of me. The forest was getting thicker my every second and my breath was accelerating. Dread filled my stomach and I could feel sweat in my palms. Was I going to have a panic attack in middle of the forest? Taking shallow breaths I tried to divert my mind.

"Anya?" Kay nudged me with her elbow.

"Hmm?"

"You were saying something?"

"Yeah...We are done with this. No more investigation and more article. It's too much work"

"Seriously?" Kay opened her mouth after a few seconds, a frown on her face. It was obvious that she did not buy it but that's the only thing I could come up with. Sometimes Kay can be tad bit overprotective and I didn't want her to beef with Damon. They were just progressing with their friendship and I didn't want her to choose sides.

I shrugged lamely, blinking back the tears in my eyes. Those were unexpected really. From the packhouse, I managed to hold back and not cry but as we got closer to the forest I couldn't help it.

With my throat clogged up, I whimpered, "I'm tired, Kay. It's worth nothing anyway. Let it be"

She scoffed, "Worth nothing? Are you hearing yourself, Anya? The other day you were ready to find the real killer for your boyfriend's pain and now you feel like it's nothing? What's going on?"

I blew a breath on my palms, pushing them on my face. A sigh slipped my lips at the coolness on my face.

"He-" My voice was muffled against my palm. Wiping the tears from my cheeks I hiccuped. Kay handed me the water bottle from the bag and I nearly cried taking it. Gulping down almost half bottle I suddenly felt a lot better than before. Maybe it was dehydration.

"Damon?" Kay questioned before I could say anything. I nodded my head, eyes focused on the blank screen of the car radio.

"Yes...He embarrassed me in front of his uncle and Ryan just to price his point. Just to prove that I was stupid enough to even work it behind his back. That I wasn't incapable of something like it"

A sob escaped my lips at those thoughts. Kay made a face, her lips pressed together and she tightened her grip on the steering. Tears flowed down my cheeks and I furiously wiped them away just thinking about it. Why couldn't he consider that possibility? It was not like I had said something others weren't thinking. His uncle was no good for nothing was only rich because of Damon's parents. He had a strong motive to kill them but Damon was on his side and maybe will always be.

"He's a dead man now" Kay muttered as she skewed the car suddenly and I screeched as my eyes fell on the creature in front of us.

"Kay!" My arms jerked her at the sight in front of us to which she managed to get away. The car jerked forward, coughing several smokes before it crushed against the tree. My eyes immediately to see behind us, the wolf was lying on the floor. It made my stomach twist. What if it was one of the good ones?

"Anya where are you going?" Kay asked frantically, her hands gripping at mine. She was shaking, sweat rolling down her forehead. I had managed to pull myself away and rush out of the car. Kay's window was cracked and the headlight smashed against the tree.

"Shit shit is it another of the werewolf?" Kay muttered from behind me, our footsteps echoing as we rushed. As I got closer my breath was knocked out noticing that it was human bent over, facing the ground and not some animal.

"It's not an animal Kay" I whimpered in a soft voice, raising my head in her direction. She mumbled something under her breath but managed to keep it discreet. Before I could reach out to the man and flip him over Kay was already turning him on his back.

My eyes widened staring at the person in front of me. Of course, it had to be him. Just my luck. Of all people in the town Kay crashed into the person, I was trying to run away from.

"No way. No no no" I blabbered as Kay was trying to make him open his eyes. Damon was going to kill both of us if he ever finds out.

"Who is it? Do you know him?" Kay questioned staring at me and then at the person lying on the ground. Fortunately, there was no blood on the surface which meant that he was able to duck away from the attack.

"Yes"

I breathed deeply, "He's Dean Arcuri. Damon's brother"

Kay gasped, shaking her head and frantically stood up, pacing from one corner to another. With her reaction, I wasn't shocked because I felt the same when I found out it was Dean and not some animal. Leaving her alone I rushed to the car and grabbed the water bottle from the seat.

"Fuck! Damon's going to kill me, isn't he?" Kay whispered as I sat on my knees in front of him. Dean had his head lolled back so I carefully lifted his head off the floor and tried to make him drink some water.

"I think so"

Kay cried, "Save me, Anya"

"Will you relax? He's not dead just unconscious"

Kay gasped, stomping her feet against the road, "What the hell Anya? You could have told me earlier and saved all this trouble"

"I would have if you let me speak now atleast help me lift him up" I rolled my eyes, tilting my head towards her. She sagged her body forward whenever she gets work she does that. Nothing new.

"How are we gonna lift him? He's a giant!" Kay whispered as she tried to pull at his arm. My mouth slacked open at her attempt and I slapped her hand away.

"Are you crazy? We are not dragging him. Just make him sit up so that I can sprinkle some water on him. My hands are busy"

"Oh," She sheepishly smiled and held on to him as I tried to take some water in my hand. Dean scrunched his face as I patted at his cheeks with cold palms and sprinkled some water on his face.

He blinked his eyes several times, shifting his arms and legs around as he slowly peeked at me. I shyly waved at him, my cheeks tinted pink while Kay was still holding on to his head. At the glare she immediately let it go and took a step back.

I licked my lips, "I'm-"

"Anya. I know that...I recognize you. What's going on?" He groaned, suddenly rubbing at his temples and looked around. His bag was lying around a few steps away from him. Before I could reach he rushed and pulled it closer.

"Who are you?" He questioned staring at Kay

"Umm...she's my friend Kay."

"What am I doing on the road? I was supposed to be in the packhouse"

At his stare I kept quiet. Somehow I knew that my silence was not going to end well.
