Chapter 13: Decisions and Promises
Elena’s P.O.V:
“Are you alright?” Knight got up from his seat after Leo went out the door and came to stand in front of me. “You look a bit pale.”
I shook my head at him. “I’m fine.”
“How are you feeling today? You should really lie down for some time.” Knight said with genuine concern.
In fact, I was feeling a bit tired, but going back inside the bedroom with Knight was a big no-no. It was far too soon for that. “I’ll just have a seat on the couch.” I told him instead.
Once I was seated, I motioned for Knight to take his seat as well. Instead of taking his previous seat the couch opposite mine, he took a seat at the foot of my couch and much to my astonishment, took my feet into his lap and started giving them a massage. I closed my eyes and leaned back on the couch, almost moaning at how wonderful the foot rub felt, until I remembered who I was with.
“You don’t have to do that…” I trailed off unsurely, my mind divided.
“It’s okay,” Knight smiled up at me through his thick black lashes. “I want to.”
I knew I was putting off the inevitable, we both were. So I finally broke the silence. “We need to talk.”
Knight carefully massaged my calves, staying silent for a while before he raised his head to face me. “I know. It’s what I’m here for.”
“Look,” I removed my legs from his lap to avoid a distraction and sat up straighter. “I…I-“I sighed, not knowing where to start. But thankfully, Knight filled in the gaps.
“We both said a lot of things yesterday that we didn’t mean to,” Knight said. “And I’d take it back if I could, but I want to say that I’m sorry. When I met you yesterday, I wanted to have you back in my life at any cost. And when trying to convince you didn’t work, I tried to use blackmail. I’m sorry for causing you distress. Robert reminded me that not only could I lose you, but we could’ve lost…”
He didn’t say anything further, he didn’t need to. “I…have complications.” I informed him.
Knight’s eyes snapped to mine. “What kind of complications?”
“My doctor says that I have an abnormally shaped uterus, so there are chances of the child being born in a breech position. But it’s only the third month and since babies move around a lot, it’s still not sure if the child will be breech.” I explained. “But if it is, then I’ll need to get a C-section.”
“But C-sections leave a scar.” Knight said, his brows dawn together. “And breech babies can be turned, can’t they?”
Knight blushed when he found me gawking at him. Color spread through his cheeks and down his neck and he rubbed the back of his neck nervously as I continued to gawk at him. “I…couldn’t sleep last night…so I read a bunch of books on kindle.”
“You read pregnancy books?” I asked dumbly.
“I wanted to stay prepared for everything.” Knight said solemnly. “I want to be there for you whenever you need me. I want to be a part of your life and our baby’s.”
I sighed; it was that discussion again. But I guess we can’t move forward until we get past this discussion. “Look, Knight.” I started. “I don’t trust you and I don’t think I ever will.” I saw him wince but I kept going. “But this child belongs to you as much as it belongs to me and I don’t believe in separating a child from its family.”
Knight seemed to visibly relax upon hearing my words. “And how do you want to make this work?”
I shrugged. “I haven’t decided that yet but I want to take things slow; figure things out as we go.”
Knight’s P.O.V:
“I agree.” I told her immediately, but I think she must already know that at this point, I was willing to agree to anything. “We’ll take things slow.”
“You want to say something.” Elena injected.
“Say what?” I asked.
“Knight, we both know that you’d been desperate enough yesterday to ask me to marry you.” She said. “I don’t see how you could change so much overnight that you’re willing to settle for anything you get. So tell me, what do you want to say in all this?”
I sighed. How did she figure it out so easily? I had my hands clenched on my lap, my nails digging into my palms with so much force that it hurt to unclench them. I liked to believe that I was a difficult man to read, but lack of sleep and scattered thoughts weren’t the best possible combination while trying to maintain your composure. And Elena was an intelligent woman, she didn’t seem like she could be easily persuaded. And not to mention how stubborn she was.
“Will you move in with me?” I asked. Demands won’t get me anywhere and like Elena said, she doesn’t trust me. I’ll need to earn her trust first if I want to be anything more that the father of our child.
She instantly looked weary so I tried my best to convince her. “Elena, my house is bigger than your apartment and I have several staff members who will make sure you are well cared for whenever I’m not with you. You don’t have to cook or clean or do any house chores that you do now. You’ll have more time to look after yourself and from what Helena told me yesterday, you need all the rest you can get.”
Elena didn’t say anything for the longest time. I began to think that maybe she hadn’t heard a single word I’d said but then she looked up at me, her big green eyes seemed to pierce right through to my soul. “I’d like to think about it for a few days.” She said at last.
I felt myself release the breath I had no idea I was holding. Relief washed over me. She didn’t say no right away, which means there was a chance. I nodded, satisfied at having made some progress. “Take as long as you want to.” I said reluctantly.
Elaine gave me a small smile, and it turned her face hauntingly beautiful. Elena was a natural beauty; the kind that looked gorgeous no matter what. And she was also a beautiful soul. As much as I had learned about her, she was kind and intelligent and had an iron will. I’d already let her go once, blinded by my rage to have actually thought my decision through. But I’d be a fool if I let her go again.
This time I made a promise to myself. Elena will be mine before our baby was born. Our baby will always have both parents in its life, who loved them just as much as they loved each other.
