Chapter 28: Coming Horrors

Elena’s P.O.V
“I…I’m sorry…for the other day.” Knight apologized. He had his hands on his lap and his face drawn in harsh lines. He had bags under his eyes, indicating that he hadn’t been sleeping well.
“Why did you do it?” I tilted my head to the side, studying him. I didn’t know him well enough to understand if he would lie to my face, but I hoped he would give me an honest reply.
“Couldn’t we have spoken somewhere privately?” He asked finally, loosening his tie as he looked around at all the people inside the restaurant. I had purposely chosen a public setting because I was pregnant and my hormones were everywhere. I’m pretty sure anyone to persuade me to buy a grenade right now and I wouldn’t even blink. And I needed to keep my head straight. Plus, two of my father’s guards were sitting on a table at the front of the restaurant from where they would be far enough for privacy and close enough so that Knight couldn’t do anything stupid.
“I’m fine just where we are.” I shrugged. “I don’t want to make any rash or impulsive decisions and the setting helps.”
“You seem to have changed.” He observed.
“No,” I shook my head. “I’m the same old Elena, but I no longer feel helpless. I know what I want now and I have my family behind me.”
“I don’t want to lose you, Elena.” Knight told me after some thought. “When I found out you were leaving, I felt like I was about to lose everything important to me. So I acted rashly and told my parents that my girlfriend was pregnant and that I wanted to marry her. I brought them here to get permission for marriage.”
“Did you tell them the truth afterwards?” I raised my eyebrows at him.
“Yes.” He winced. “They weren’t very happy about it.”
“I could’ve guessed.”
“Do you really not feel anything about me?” Knight asked curiously, leaning forward in his chair so that only I could hear his voice. “We are having a child together. And we have so much chemistry. I feel it every time I kiss you.”
I sighed, thinking of the best way to explain to him but I realized there was no easy way. “Have you deleted the sex tape?”
“Don’t say it like that-”
“Then what should I call it, Knight?” I gave a humorless laugh. “Blackmail material? Because that was the basis of our relationship. A revenge tape you filmed without my consent that I can drag you to court for.”
“Elena…” Knight visibly paled. “We can resolve this differently.”
“I was twenty three, living in a foreign country, earning a living and minding my own shit.” I told him harshly. “You didn’t even ask me if I was actually the one who took the photo of you with a married woman. You didn’t even hire professionals or ask the detectives or police. To be very honest, I wouldn’t have minded if the cops had come knocking on my door. I would’ve actually preferred it. But instead, you took everything in your own hands and filmed a sex tape of us. Of me.”
“And yes, Knight. I did feel something when I was with you. It’s called lust. It was the reason why I broke my three year long celibacy to sleep with you. I thought it would be a new start. How wrong was I, right? To have just stupidly walked right into your trap? I would rather choose an honest man who respects me than someone who is as irrational as you just because I felt ‘sparks’!”
Knight stared at me for a long time, boring holes into my skull with his eyes. To be honest, if I hadn’t had that conversation with my mother last night, I would have never had this courage today. My mother helped me understand myself and she also helped me realize that no matter how old a child gets, they will always need their parents.
“Is it because of him? Landon?” His voice was harsh when speaking Landon’s name and it made me want to take a sledge hammer to his head.
“Have you lost your mind?” I asked him incredulously. “Did you not hear anything I told you just now?”
“I want to know.” He swallowed. “If Landon didn’t come back into your life…would I have had a chance?”
“Even if Landon didn’t come back, there was never a chance between you and me.” I told him firmly. “This isn’t a competition between you and Landon. If we had met under different circumstances, maybe then we would have worked out. If you would’ve just asked me if I had leaked a picture, then maybe we could’ve cleared our misunderstandings. But it’s too late for that.”
“But…you’re pregnant with my child!” He shook his head. “I cannot let my child grow up without a father.”
“You can visit your child anytime or apply for co-parenting, but don’t make this child an excuse to ruin not one but three lives, Knight.” I snapped. “I’m enough for my child and I will go to court if you keep this shit up. I don’t need a man’s help or name to raise my child.”
“B-”
“Knight!”
Both of us turned to find a man walking towards us hurriedly. He had short brown hair and brown eyes and had an average built. He was also on the shorter side, about five feet eight incher or so. He looked familiar but I couldn’t quiet place a name to the face.
“Emanuel? What’re you doing here?” Knight asked, standing up from his chair and I was finally able to remember him. Emanuel Millar, Keena’s husband! I had almost completely forgotten about him until now.
“Knight! You need to see this!” Emanuel was panting when he handed Knight the tablet he had in his hand. There was an urgency in his voice that gave me the feeling that something was very, very wrong.
“What is it?” Knight took the tablet from him with a frown but as soon as he saw whatever was on the screen, his face visibly paled.
“I don’t know how this happened…but…what should we do now?” Emanuel asked him, looking like he was about to have a panic attack. I didn’t quite understand what was going on, not until Knight looked at me helplessly and handed me the tablet.
I took it from him with a frown but as soon as I saw the screen, my entire world came crashing down all around me.
Because it was a picture of me and Knight, inside my apartment, on my bed, kissing while we were half naked. It was the video that Knight had filmed of us…the sex tape. And the news headline wrote:
