Chapter 20: Nerve-wracking
Knight’s P.O.V:
I made my bed; went over to the kitchen to make myself some coffee; waited patiently for the coffee to get done; drank the entire cup and then headed back to the bed; twisted and turned restlessly and then got up to make the bed again.
By now I’d already drank five cups of coffee and my bladder was about to burst but I couldn’t seem to snap myself out of this crazy ritual that I had going on since this morning. I was more than a little nervous and I didn’t know what to do about it.
Yeah, sure night! You’re a perfect example of a nice guy. First screw a girl without knowing her marital status. Then see yourself plastered all over the newspaper in a shameful position. Then go check the CCTV footage and find some innocent girl moving around backstage doing her business and instantly assume that she’s the culprit. And then do the unthinkable and fool her at a bar and have revenge sex after getting her drunk. And then, bam! Get her pregnant. And now all I can do for Elena is be by her side till the end and marry her so our baby gets the love of both parents. And for that I’ll need to ask her parents for her hand.
Yeah, right! As if her parents were jumping with joy at having their daughter pregnant by a complete stranger. What a track record I’ve made! I should be fucking proud of myself!
I should just jump off a cliff and save everyone a great deal of trouble.
My phone rang at that moment with my sister’s caller tune and I hesitated to pick up. Keena was pregnant too, with her husband’s child. It wasn’t alright for her to stress this much. And neither should Elena. But there was nothing I could do to help her. When I’d sex with her, I’d never thought she’d get pregnant. It was just revenge fuck for God’s sake! But now Karma had fucked me over big time, leaving me to deal with the consequences alone.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t regret that Elena and I are having a baby. I’m thrilled to become a father and I’m glad that Elena is its mother, but I just wish the consequences had been different.
Deciding to answer the phone, I picked it up before the line went dead. “Hey, Keena.”
“Where on earth were you?” She exclaimed. “You know how worried I get if you don’t pick up the phone! Now, tell me, did you hear anything from Elena yet?”
“No,” I pinched the bridge of my nose as I paced the length of my kitchen with my phone to my ear. “I haven’t heard from her yet and I don’t want to disturb her time with her parents. She’ll be seeing them after a long time.”
“Fuck that!” I was so stunned at Keena’s cussing that I stopped dead in my track. “Call her and find out if her parents are dragging her back home. Now!”
“Keena,” I told her calmly. “I can’t do that. And even if they are dragging her back home, it’s not like I have any excuse to stop her.”
“Yes, you do! It’s your baby! That child is your heir, heir to the entire Tyson Industries! Think practically for once!” Keena snapped. “If you don’t have any excuse to stop her then make one! Tell her parents you’re madly in love with their daughter or something-“
“Kareena,” I cut her off mid rant, my voice sharp. “Don’t ever ask me to do that, ever again. I know you’re the one who took care of me my entire childhood when mom and dad were too busy building an empire; I take advice from you on company matters because you’re a thirty percent share holder. But I will not take advice from you on my personal matters.”
With that I hung up the phone.
Keena wasn’t a bad person, she always wants what’s best for me, but sometime she loses track of what’s wrong and what’s right. When we’d been just children, Keena had always been my shield, whether it was fighting off bullies or taking care of me when I’d fallen ill. For a long time, she’d controlled what went on in my life, from my friends to what clothes I wore on a daily basis and I didn’t have any complaints about the way she’d raised me. But even now, she sometimes forgets that I’m no longer a child, that I no longer need her to fight my demons. I’m hoping that she’ll divert her attention from me once her own baby is born and I can’t wait for that day to come.
I regret speaking so rudely to her and I will apologize to her once I’ve got my own nerves sorted, but for the time being, I’ll need to keep my head straight and think about the situation Elena and I are in.
If you don’t have any excuse to stop her then make one! Tell her parents you’re madly in love with their daughter.
Keena’s words rang in my ears once again, but I shook the thought out of my mind before it could take root. I’ve already caused Elena a lot of trouble. She hadn’t expected to get pregnant, not at this age when she’d just started to build her career, I can’t just go and dump on another burden on her shoulder. No matter how much I wanted her, I knew the attraction was physical; it might never even turn to love.
The bell rang at that instant, distracting me from my thoughts and the coffee machine. I just hope it wasn’t Keena here to lecture me some more on how I should deal with Elena’s parents.
But as soon as I opened the door, for the second time today, I was stunned into stopping in my tracks.
“Elena?”
