Chapter 27

"She won't go back, because she can't bear to leave me," Emil lazily said, pressing his lips against Sarah's stiff neck. "Isn't that right, Sarah?"

"Nonsense! My sister is the future priestess, she knows exactly how to deal with a villain like you. She's only being coerced by you, forced to submit—"

"Of course Sarah won't forget her duty," a stern woman's voice echoed coldly from the other side of the street. Olsen stood at the alley's exit, five sisters behind her. The solemn gaze of the six formed a powerful pressure, all directed at Sarah.

Olsen commanded her niece, "Xinyi, come here." Ivy stepped towards her clan, looking back puzzled at Sarah, who remained motionless. They clearly had the upper hand, so why wasn't Sarah dealing with Emil? Why was she letting him hide behind her, facing their aunt? It was as if... she was standing against her own family?

"It seems the priestess calculated that I'd be unwell tonight, planning to use numbers to win," Emil chuckled lightly, releasing the girl in his arms, not hesitating to push her further into confusion and despair. "What do you think, Sarah?"

What to do?

Sarah watched her cousin walk to their foster mother. Their identical red and white robes symbolized the bone-deep kinship she had relied on all her life. Behind her stood a man she had known for less than a month, who had driven a wedge between her and her family. The line was drawn clearly. She could only choose one side. Sarah bit her lip, pale, and looked at her foster mother. "Did you know about the experiment?"

"Of course," Olsen replied, neither angry nor particularly stern.

"Neither vampires nor humans accept him, yet they both exploit him without hesitation. Are we supposed to be the ones to finish him off? What did he do wrong? He couldn't choose his birth, but has to bear this original sin for life?" The more she spoke, the more she felt everything was absurd and despicable. "Our Delin family is considered a sacred and ancient clan, but what we do in private, how is it any different from the vampires we despise?"

The women beside Olsen were already fuming. One of them shouted angrily, "What nonsense are you talking about?! He slaughtered hundreds of our clan members, ask him if he did such a brutal thing! Our Delin family is supposed to exorcise demons, what's wrong with killing him? How dare you compare us to vampires—"

Olsen raised her hand, silencing the woman. She looked at her foster daughter, saying calmly, "A true believer does not question the existence of God. You are a Delin, you should not question the decisions of the Delin family, just follow them, unless you have fundamentally lost faith in our family." She signaled two sisters to step forward. "I think you're just confused. Resolving this matter quickly should clear your mind."

Ivy only understood parts of the conversation between her aunt and cousin. Seeing two aunts take out talismans, clearly intending to deal with Emil, she shouted to Sarah, "Sister, the aunts are going to deal with him, come over here quickly to avoid danger!" When Sarah still didn't move, she yelled anxiously, "Your task is to kill him, not to die with him!"

Die? Sarah watched as the two aunts tore open the talismans, which were specifically designed to deal with vampires. In his current state, he couldn't possibly withstand them.

She didn't need to turn around to feel him intentionally keeping a distance behind her, clearly not planning to interfere with her decision. Her foster mother watched her indifferently, her gaze neither disappointed nor angry, as if certain she would follow orders as usual, yet also observing what she would do.

Caught between both sides, immense pressure squeezed her, forcing her to make a decision. She almost felt she would be crushed and driven mad by the weight, shattered into pieces. She had never defied her foster mother, but her feet refused to move away from him...

Silver liquid flowed from the torn talismans, transforming into several silver threads shooting straight at Sarah. She had no bracelet or any magical tool tonight, unable to block them barehanded. But if she stepped aside, he would die under the talisman.

His life was in her hands.

As the silver threads reached Sarah, she still didn't move. With a loud "bang," the threads hit something, causing smoke to rise.

"Sister!" Ivy exclaimed. The talisman was imbued with multiple spells, designed to deal with vampires, but ordinary people couldn't withstand it either!

She grabbed one of the aunts who had cast the talisman, shouting regardless of respect, "What are you doing! Sister is one of us! Even if she's momentarily confused, she doesn't deserve to die!"

"Quiet!" Olsen scolded her niece, eyes fixed on the gradually clearing smoke, revealing a pale blue shadow.

It was a giant bird as tall as a person, with a slender neck and a translucent icy-blue body, enveloped in a cold radiance. The bird spread its long wings, shielding Sarah behind it. Through its wings, her resolute face was faintly visible, clearly determined to fight.

Ivy was stunned, murmuring, "'Seven Herons'..."

It was a "Spirit Guardian," a complex spell only Sarah could use in the clan. The sorcerer feeds the spirit with their soul and power; the longer the feeding, the stronger the spirit and the tighter its bond with the sorcerer. If the spirit is destroyed, the sorcerer could be injured or even die.

She was willing to protect that man with her life, standing against her own clan? Why?

The five women stepped forward without waiting for Olsen's order, forming a pentagram, each taking out magical tools.

Olsen said calmly, "The target is Emil, not Sarah. Try not to hurt her."

No, this can't happen! Ivy wanted to scream, to stop this absurd situation of family killing each other. But the facts were there, it was her cousin who broke the ancestral rules, forcing the aunts to act. She was so anxious she was about to cry, wanting to plead with her aunt but couldn't find the words, watching helplessly as the aunts activated the pentagram. Countless silver lights gathered in the air, raining down like meteors toward Emil.

The spirit responded to Sarah's thoughts, splitting into seven. Seven little herons flew to Emil, blocking the silver rain. But there were gaps between the wings, and some silver points penetrated the defense, about to hit Emil. Sarah stepped back, shielding him, and the silver points all landed on her.
