Chapter 12 Humorously Ominous
Harold remained calm. "The poor resent the rich, and the rich resent the officials. A universal phenomenon."
Nick asked, "Mayor, aren't you going to pursue it?"
He narrowed his eyes and replied, "Nah, you handled it well, without any major mishaps."
Maggie was still bent over between the man's legs. "Maggie, how long do you plan on staying in that position?"
She resisted the urge to retch and managed to say, "Sir, I feel nauseous from being jolted around."
As she spoke, her face pressed further into his crotch. When the man's thing wasn't erect, it was soft and hidden in his pants, but its size was not to be underestimated.
"Are you sure?" Harold's thigh muscles tightened, and he lifted her chin upwards. A few small drops of blood seeped from her wound, which he wiped away with his fingertip. Only then did he notice her high temperature and held her whole body up properly.
"Is there any fever-reducing medicine in the car?"
Nick said that he had some, and he parked the car by the roadside. He took out motion sickness medication, fever-reducing medicine, and a piece of peppermint candy from his jacket pocket.
Thanks to her healthy lifestyle, Maggie's health was good, and she could withstand illnesses like typhoid fever. It was just motion sickness that bothered her. As she swallowed the medicine, her gaze glanced at the green and white packaged candy.
Her face felt like it was on fire.
"I'm much better now. I should get off "
Harold didn't think so. He saw that even her eyelids had turned pink, and his phone in his pocket vibrated a few times. It was most likely the city government summoning him back.
Time was of the essence.
Her blushing face, reminiscent of a peach in spring, showed hesitation, as if she was considering what farewell words to say.
Harold forrowed, finally she said, "Mr. Edwards, See you."
Then she dropped off the car.
Maggie spent the night at the television station dormitory and turned off her phone. She had no idea that Matt had been bombarding her with calls.
The next day, she arrived at work on time.
In her hands, she held a program called "Shining Bright." It was a stage introduction showcasing a collection of small inventions.
The airing time was at 9:00 PM.
She carried her makeup bag and went into the bathroom to remove her makeup. In the hallway, at this moment...
Crowded with a bunch of women dressed provocatively, even on such a cold day, the air was filled with the presence of these seductive women flaunting their long legs.
The entertainment center of the television station was prepared for a blind date reality show and had signed a group of female participants from a marriage agency. There were hardly any serious seekers for marriage, only those seeking fame and attention, including car models and wild models.
"Quiet! Step forward and register when your name is called! No filling in your cup size in the age column!" the director shouted hoarsely.
Maggie wiped away the foam from her face and the Manager waited for her by the door, beckoning her to the corner of the corridor.
"Maggie, did you have a fight with Mr. Williams? He removed three advertisements from the primetime slot overnight. Do you know how much this will affect the television station?" the Manager didn't mince words.
"We've already separated," Maggie didn't hide the truth.
"Separated?" the Manager was shocked. "When did this happen? Why didn't you inform the television station?"
"The day before yesterday," she wiped away the water droplets on her forehead, biting her lip as the small cut throbbed. "I was on my way to your office."
"How foolish of you! You... do you know that at the end of the month, there is going to be a promotion to the news center, and I was planning to recommend you," the Manager sighed.
"You were planning to recommend me? Was it Matt's suggestion?" Maggie was surprised.
"It was my suggestion!" the Manager sighed again. "Maggie, did you separate? Your relationship as a couple was always so good. Mr. Williams would pick you up from work at night and even prepare roses for the television station on holidays. It's hard to find such a good husband. How did things come to this point?"
Maggie pursed her lips, her face filled with suppressed anger.
Sending roses was just a matter of money.
As for picking her up from work, it was just on the way. Matt had a fixed place for his affairs with his male companions, which happened to be at the four-star Dovet Hotel just across the street from the television station.
"Since it was the suggestion of the Manager, what about this promotion?" Maggie asked.
The Manager waved their hand. "I have to reconsider. You haven't become a formal employee, but I thought it could work because you've been able to secure stable sponsorships for the television station. Maggie, don't blame me for being superficial. There are plenty of well-educated and talented hosts out there. Even if you were to be transferred to the news center to host your own program, you would still need to attract sponsorships. That's just how this industry works."
The reason sounded reasonable, leaving Maggie with nothing to say.
She turned back toward her office, where Ellie had her legs propped up on the desk, leisurely painting her nails. Ellie was the selected female host for the blind date reality show and came from a privileged background. Her role as a host was merely for fun.
When Maggie first joined the station, she had envied Ellie.
Later, when she became Mrs. Williams, her ex-husband flaunted their love affair, which had once made her bask in the envy of others.
She had briefly believed that she had found her true soulmate.
Ellie examined her nails, turning them over. "I heard you stayed at the dormitory last night. Got tired of staying at Matt's villa?"
Maggie remained silent, tidying up the documents on her desk.
"Do you know what I admire most about you, Maggie?" Ellie blinked. "You can love with all your heart and leave with all your heart."
"Anyway, a lot of people in our circle know about the matter concerning Zhou Si Chi Yu. They cover for him. I even placed a bet that you wouldn't last two years."
Ellie's voice was coarse, with a masculine tone. In her private life, she frequented bars, drank alcohol, and smoked without any taboos.
Maggie was the opposite of her. She avoided all bad habits that could harm her voice. She was restrained. She was from the south and graduated from a prestigious local broadcasting program. She had been considered a key incubation object by the department.
Her family faced changes. Her father passed away, causing a huge uproar. Her mother remarried and forced her to accompany her to Washington D.C.
They didn't have much interaction, but Ellie's sarcastic remarks at the moment made Maggie feel embarrassed.
She felt as if her breath was being squeezed and her shoulders trembled.
"So you knew early on that he didn't like women?"
Ellie leaned back in her chair and played with a neutral pen. "Yeah, I knew. Our circle is so small, how could anything fresh come out of it?"
