Chapter 53 Unarmed

D.C was under the jurisdiction of the 38th administrative district. Its location in X State was unique, situated at the intersection of two cities, and it was once neglected and not given the financial support for development.
Over two years ago, the president of the city committee visited the state with his wife, donating over four hundred thousand dollars to expand the primary school and renovate the hospital. His attitude now represented the state's voice towards the city, and X state had become the leading county in terms of poverty alleviation.
They had been able to enjoy a substantial amount of funding and projects for poverty alleviation, and the media had even dubbed it as the "Prince County."
"Outrageous."
There were still remnants of blood under Nelsa's fingernails, but Maggie, who was empathetic, couldn't bear to look at it for long.
She turned to look at Rob, "Rob, the TV station wants to do a special interview with you..."
Rob handed her a cup of warm water and anticipated this, so he awkwardly pulled out a companion chair and sat down, "Mrs. Green, I have my reasons."
Maggie knew he had concerns, "The interview won't take long, and if you're worried about your sister being alone, I can come and take care of her. I'll do my best to help."
He sat down and sighed, "Thank you for your kindness, but I have made up my mind not to appear in front of any media."
Dan fiddled with his cufflinks and observed them, remaining silent all this time.
She put down her apple and spoke seriously, "Is there something that troubles you? Would you be willing to tell me?"
Rob fell into silence.
Dan could tell that Rob's attitude towards Maggie was mild. The local TV station had sent reporters multiple times, and this doctor from the same hometown either exploded in anger or stopped, displaying a strong aversion to the media.
Maggie spoke sincerely, "I want to help you. Last time at the Night of Culture, I mentioned your letter, and I followed through on it."
Hearing this, Rob was a bit moved.
Without Maggie's help, his sister would not have been rescued from the basement in time, and her injuries would have been even more dangerous.
He rubbed his face, feeling a lump in his throat, "Dominic has a powerful backer behind him, and he only dared to commit such a crime with his support... Every corruption case involves a network of criminals working together. If I speak out and offend anyone else, my sister won't be able to leave the hospital. It would be easy for them to retaliate and frame her. Mrs. Green, for her safety, I must be cautious."
Maggie paused, and Rob felt a chill in his heart. No one would believe him now.
He gathered his courage to make a desperate complaint, all for the sake of his sister. He had been practicing medicine for most of his life, and now that his loved one was paralyzed, it consumed all his energy.
She was about to speak, but Dan spoke first, "Rob, Dominic's domestic violence against your sister is a criminal case, different from economic crimes. There's no room for negotiation. The law is far-reaching, ,and he will be arrested one day. The impact of this matter becoming public will be even greater, and the punishment for him will be severe."
As the best male host in the city's TV station, his voice belonged to a god-like figure, which was deep, powerful, and imbued with gravity and a sense of ceremony. "If he has influential connections, he might not be able to protect due to public opinion."
Rob remained unmoved, "You don't understand how deep this rabbit hole goes..."
Dan, with his elegant posture, said outstandingly, "There is no eternal darkness in this world. As long as you are willing to come forward and cooperate, we'll help dig his dirty tircks and you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel."
Surprised by his confident and resolute words, Maggie raised her eyes to look at him, but Dan's gaze happened to fall away.
In that instant of eye contact, his emotions were neither salty nor bland, and he averted his eyes.
Rob let out a weak laugh, "You're too idealistic."
Footsteps echoed in the corridor.
Rob was involved in this high-profile case, and due to the special circumstances, the hospital made special arrangements for three to five security personnel to ensure his privacy and safety.
The leader, with a square face and a burly build, stood at the door. "Time's up, leave what you wanna say for tomorrow."
Dan frowned and glanced at him, "Who set it?"
The leader stepped aside, indicating for them to leave. "The hospital allows half an hour for visiting, and it's my job."
Maggie stood up, feeling unwilling, and called out, "Rob?"
"Just go, Mrs. Green." Rob waved his hand and bent down to wring out the cloth in the basin, carefully wiping his sister's cheek.
His released attitude was cold and determined.
Maggie had some expectations when she came, but she had lowered them, so her mood wasn't too complicated.
"Your last name is Green?"
"Maggie Green."
Dan walked out of the ward with her.
They had no choice but to leave. The security was strict and severe. There had been more than five or six waves of reporters to deal with these past few days. The reporters were like a human wall blocking the door, and Rob was no longer in the mood to talk.
Dan didn't hurry to join the rest of the staff from the local TV station. He squinted his eyes, pondering, "I have an impression of you, from..."
Maggie guessed that he didn't remember, "The real estate event, I took your place."
"Is that so." Dan smiled, revealing a set of white teeth. He had a strong affinity, as if basking in the warm breeze of spring. "You knew Rob before?"
"I host a show and have been to X state for filming. I've met Rob a few times."
"It's clear that he wasn't guarded against you at the beginning."
The six elevators in the inpatient department had slow floor number changes. Maggie stared at her shoe tips, her delicate profile reflected on the metal door panels.
Dan's gaze wandered absentmindedly over her.
Until the elevator door they were waiting for opened with a loud noise, and a medical bed rushed out in a frenzy.
"The patient is having a stroke, please make way!"
A sweating male doctor was kneeling on the patient's chest, applying strong pressure to the heart.
Caught off guard, Maggie's shoulder was swiftly grabbed by Dan, causing her to stagger and bump her left cheek against his arm, the lobe grazed, causing a slight stinging sensation.
It was only when they stumbled and collided with the wall that she regained her balance, losing one of her high heels in the process.
Dan leaned against the wall, his chest resonating with a muffled sound, his eyebrows tightly furrowed, emitting a painful groan.
The situation had happened too quickly, and Maggie pushed away from his embrace, "Dan, are you alright?"
Dan straightened up, clutching his chest where he had been elbowed, shaking his head, "The elevator has arrived."
Limping, Maggie picked up her shoe and put it back on. When she turned around, she noticed that his face had turned pale.
He looked apologetic. "Did you hit your head hard? What about your chest? I think I hit you."
"It's alright," Dan said, holding the elevator door open for her. He straightened his wrinkled shirt and chuckled, "This time I remember you, Mrs. Green."
