Drago Epilogue

Leaning against the windowsill, Damien looked down over his newborn son bathed in the glorious light of a new morning. Holding him close to his chest, Damien leaned in and kissed his head covered with short, soft dark hair. He inhaled the smell of jasmine and the comfort of it washed through his chest. "I have been waiting so very long to hold you again, Drago. I swear to you that, this time, there will be no safer place for you. There will be no creature strong enough to take you from my arms again."

As he turned and brought Drago up to his shoulder, Damien softly rubbed his cheek against his fuzzy head. "You know, I had a vision of your future just right before you were born. She won't give you quite the trouble that your mother gave me, but these women aren't ever simple, are they? No, they aren't and that's what makes them so exciting, isn't it? But, not to worry, my son. She is a fine woman just the same."

With his soft, plump cheeks resting on his balled up fists, Drago yawned and whimpered as the vibrations from his fathers voice stopped soothing him as he slept. Damien clicked his tongue through his teeth. "So sorry, you're so used to hearing your mother talk so much that you don't like the quiet, do you? Well, I'll keep you company as long as you wish. I wanted to take you around and show you off to everyone anyway."

Damien nodded his head to the soldiers and servants as they passed and stole quick peeks at the new prince. When he came to the foyer, he found Teddy and Daniel sitting by the fireplace so he took a seat on the sofa beside his father. As Daniel ran his fingertips over Drago's soft baby hairs, Teddy said, "He sure is a handsome boy, Damien."

"Yes, he certainly is. Isn't he?" Damien licked his bottom lip then pressed them both together as he snorted out a soft cry. Daniel squeezed his shoulder in comfort as Damien wiped his cheek on his other. "I'm sorry, it's just I thought this day would never come."

As he sat on the sofa with his arm draped over the back and his ankle across his knee, Teddy smiled and said, "Shoot. When Gretchen was born, I cried as much as she did." Daniel held up his hand behind Damien, "So did I."

Teddy laughed out loud at the King's admission and Damien smirked then sniffed back his tears. Daniel leaned forward and sighed. "This is not weakness, my son. A man not moved to tears of joy at the first breath of life of his firstborn child, well, I'm not sure I could trust such a man." Teddy nodded and said, "I agree. That's what all this is about, isn't it? For them? For our future?"

Damien closed his eyes and sniffed Drago's head. "The clock is ticking now, though. The return of the Great Evil has begun."
